TRYING PERIOD FOR MOTOR INDUSTRY
In connection with the present rather trying period of the automobile industry, A. A. May, manager of the May Motor Co., today called attention to the following expert comment which appeared on Jan. 21 in a Los Angeles newspaper:
"The automobile industry is passing through a period which ends in the survival of the flattest and the demise of scores of weak concerns. The mortality among small motor-truck makers has already been extremely severe. Something like 100 have already gone out of existence. The passenger car industry is likely to undergo a similar experience. The prospect is that the automobile industry will have a history similar to the steel industry.
"Concerns like General Motors, Studebaker, Dodge, Reo, Nash, Ford and others strongly entrenched are likely to get a firmer hold."
SOUTERN COUNTY RE-ELECTS OFFICERS
The same officers and same directors were elected at the annual meeting of the Southern County Bank yesterday afternoon.
“This week I have been hearing very encouraging things about the Nash company. During last year, a testing time, it advanced from seventeenth to seventh place in the industry, earned more than $35.00 on each share of its stock and finished the year with more than $13,000,000 cash on hand. C. W. Nash, its head, was the man who brought General Motors to the front years ago. In the automobile industry, even more than in most lines, personality counts.”
The Arms Conference is busy yet, extracting fangs of the dogs of war.
It is said that the new income-tax returns are of simpler, less puzzling form. Now if Uncle Sam would devise some form of painless extraction of the tax itself!
PHILADELPHIA DIAMOND GRID BATTERY
How Long Will Your Battery Last?
How Long Will Your Battery Last?
With any battery, the answer is—until a certain amount of active material has fallen off the plates.
In the Philco Retainer Battery, this falling off is long delayed. The active material is held firmly in place by Philco Retainers—thin sheets of slotted hard rubber whose slots are so numerous that they allow the free passage of acid and current, but so narrow that the active material cannot readily pass thru. The Philco Retainer is like a log boom, which lets the water through but holds the logs back.
The only guess you can make in buying a Philadelphia Diamond Grid Battery with the Philco Retainer, is how much longer than two years will it last. We guarantee that it will last not less than two years.

35,000 Armenian Kiddies, American Trained, the Hope for Future Peace
Boy Scouts of Near East Relief Orphanage at Alexandropol, Armenia, where 18,000 youngsters are cared for.
The basheball diamond, the football gridiron, boy and girl scout organizations, and other institutions of the American youth will play their part in the final peace in the Levant, according to Charles V. Vickrey, general secretary of the Near East Relief, who is now on a tour of inspection of the work being done by that organization in Transcaucasia.
"Behind the walls of American schools and orphanages, one finds the only tranquil spots in this whole troubled territory," he writes. Here, despite disorder, pestilence, and starvation, outside the gates, ambitious young Armenian boys and girls are making the best of the opportunities offered them by their American teachers. If only our work can be continued until these children reach maturity a new generation will arise to face the problems of the Near East with the benefit of their American training to help them. At present, however, we cannot confront by the possibility

NEW JEWETT AUTO UNVEILED AT N.Y.
Sam Hubbell Confident Car Is to Be One of Sensations of Automobile Year
The Jewett, the new light six-cylinder car designed and burglar under the auspices of the Paige-Detroit Motor Car Company and to be sold by Paige dealers, was unveiled by President Harry M. Jewett at the annual New York dinner show. It was the first glimpse anyone, other than a factory officielak has had of this keenly anticipated addition to 1922 automotive offerings, as the car is not on public exhibition as yet. For the next few weeks only dealers will be given this opportunity.
"Probably no debutante ever received a heartier welcome than the Jewett," said Sam Hubbell, local Paige distributor. "It was greeted with the greatest enthusiasm. The smartness of its design, the sturdiness of its construction and the various mechanical features outlined informally by Mr. Jewett made a profound impression on the Paige men, and they expressed themselves as delighted at the opportunity to handle such a likely and promising product."
HUSBAND SAYS WIFE WIELDED GUN BUTTS
J. B. Mulvey, of Anaheim, had no complaint to make of the first 33 years of his wedded life. Then things began to happen, he says, citing in his divorce complaint the following:
When Cornelia Mulvey, who married him nearly 39 years ago, hit him over the head with the butt of a rifle on Christmas day, he thought it was no display of the peace-on-earth spirit. Later, when she hit him in the same place with a chunk of wood; still later when she changed tactics and used the butt of a revolver; then, finally tried a hand satchel which contained some heavy

IF ONLY OUR WORK CAN BE CONTINUED UNTIL THESE CHILDREN REACH MATURITY A NEW GENERATION WILL ARRIVE TO FACE THE PROBLEMS OF THE Near East WITH THE BENEFIT OF THEIR AMERICAN TRAINING TO HELP THEM. AT PRESENT, HOWEVER, WE ARE CONFRIENDED BY THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING TO ABANDON THEMBecause OF LACK OF FUNDS. THIS WILL MEAN NOT ONLY THE WASTING OF WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN ACCOMPLISHED BUT WILL ALSO RESULT IN THE DEATH OF THE MAJORITY OF THE WAFFS OF AMERICAN CHARITY. SEVERAL HUNDRED OF THE

died during a brief period last spring when the interior stations in the Caucasus were cut off from American food. On the other hand, a continuation of the full relief program can not help but mean a better, more peaceful region in the future.
Approximately ninety thousand children in Anatolia, Cilicia, and Syria, besides the 35,000 in Transcaucasia, are receiving American training at present, according to Mr. Vickrey.
VELIE AUTO PRICE REDUCED TO $1275
Effective today, a new price drop is announced for the popular Velle 34, marking a total reduction of $600 within the past year and bringing the cost of this car down from $1875 to the rock bottom figure of $1275 delivered in Anaheim.
Official confirmation of this substantial drop is made by McGraw Bros., of Fullerton, local distributors.
It is the consensus of opinion among motorists, with whom the Velle 34 has won particular favor, that the final reduction puts this feature six in a distinctly enviable position on the local motor car market, bringing it within easy reach of thousands who had set a comparatively low price limit for their new automotive purchases.

SAYS RESOLUTION SHAMELESS
WASHINGTON, Jan. 28.—"Never in the history of legislative bodies in the world was so shameless a resolution been adopted," said Senator Reed, Democrat, of Missouri, in the senate, speaking on the resolution confirming Newberry of Michigan. Reed scored all who voted for it. Henry Ford, automobile magnate, was Newberry's opponent.
The lad who can smile and be gritty when things go wrong, has found the philosopher's stone that turns what it touches to the gold of success.
When Cornelia Mulvey, who married him nearly 39 years ago, hit him over the head with the butt of a rifle on Christmas day, he thought it was no display of the peace-on-earth spirit. Later, when she hit him in the same place with a chunk of wood; still later when she changed tactics and used the butt of a revolver; then, finally tried a hand satchel which contained some heavy article, he refrained from filing a battery charge. Instead, he sought the divorce court.
Mulvey's suit was filed in the superior court, through Attorney Clyde Bishop.
Back in 1883 they were married in Calamus county, Iowa, on Washington's birthday. All went well for the first 23 years. Then on Christmas day in 1916, came the alleged episode of the rifle. The subsequent attacks were spread over the succeeding five years. The last attack, it was alleged took place in Anaheim where he had come to live with his son, Howard. 17. She followed him here, angrily disrupted the interior of the house, and incidentally swung the hand satchel, he charges.
The Mulveys have three children, the eldest being 35.
