Here's How to Judge Used Car Disappointment in a used car purchase may be averted by exercise of the following precautions: 1. The type of car, price limits and length of previous service should be decided on so as to make the search for a used car easier. 2. Confronted by a possible purchase, the buyer should drain the radiator and look for radiator compound in the cooling system—sign of a temporary repair of a serious leak. 3. To tell the age of the car, approximate mileage and with what care it has been treated, jack up a rear wheel, engage a low gear, release the brake and turn the raised wheel one way and the other. On a two-year old car, the wheel should have about two or three inches of play, to show the car has been treated with reasonable care. 4. Nete condition of paint work, upholstery and top. 5. Examine the battery. Look for bulging of jar covers and dampness in the battery box which will indicate a serious battery fault. 6. Test the compression of the engine, by hand and while the engine is warm. 7. Test operation of the car. Do not mind engine missing while it is warming up, but the car should run smoothly and throttle down easily after it is warmed up. 8. Drive the car yourself, testing hill performance, pickup, various speeds and action of spark and throttle. Watch for jersey operation, knocks and other noises. 9. While driving, listen for rear axle and transmission noises. Test operation of the brakes. 10. Back in the garage, test wheels for wobbling and trueness. Note condition of the tires. Finally, test all equipment and accessories—horn lights, dash instruments and other spare parts. In addition, if the car selected is made by a reputable manufacturer, is assurance of good service while the car is in use. ABSENCE OF SHOWY NOTED IN '22 CARS Avoidance of the showy and absence of any general price-cutting were among the things noticed at the recent 22nd annual automobile show at the Grand Central Palace in New York by Charles H. Mann, Dodge agent for Anaheim, who has returned home. Mann said four floors were required to display the various cars and accessories, one entire floor being given up to the latter. Late models were in evidence, so far as they had been brought out, said Mann, who added that he saw many cars which he didn't know even by name. There was some increase in beaut of design, as usual, but the greater prevalence of four-passenger models made for straighter lines in bodies. Body designs in general were little changed, according to Mann's observation. Standard colors appeared to be in as steady demand as ever, the local agent declared. BEACH WILL MAKE BIG IMPROVEMENTS Projects which will cost close to $1,000,000 are scheduled to be carried out at Newport Beach before the end of the year. Work is now well under way on the new $360,000 sewer system, which will have a disposal plant at the northwestern city limits and will serve the entire city from West Newport to Balboa and Balboa Island. An extension program of street paving will be undertaken, to include all main thoroughfare and virtually all side streets as well. A new bridge will be constructed at the city limits, according to a recent decision of the city trustees, and Central-ave will be paved from that point through Newport, East Newport and Balboa to B-st, a distance of nearly two miles. Through deeds recently given by the Pacific Electric, Central-ave, will be paved on both sides of the P.E. tracks. The total cost of this paving will undoubtedly run into the hundreds of Late models were in evidence, so far as they had been brought out, said Mann, who added that he saw many cars which he didn't know even by name. Some interesting talks were delivered by representatives on the merits of their own cars, but there were no general auditorium lectures. The show lasted Jan. 7-14. Ninety-four manufacturers were represented and approximately 400 cars shown. Among the price cuts announced was that of the Dodge Bros. car, effective Feb. 1. Greater mechanical perfection appeared to be the general aim of manufacturers this year, judging by the cars exhibited. This was true in respect both to parts and their lubrication. The general aim was to produce cars of longer life and more economical to maintain. Lubrication was given a good deal of attention. The high pressure lubricator has come into very general use, oil cups are evident more than ever before and many new devices to control temperatures are on the market. Vacuum fuel feed is becoming universal, to judge by the show. Two new steam cars were displayed, the Coats and the Gearless, both at prices more moderate than ever before. The new Franklin four-cylinder car for 1923 also was on exhibit. AUTO NOTES Apply the brakes slowly. American farmers own 400,000 motor tractors. One farm ein very four | Ontario has a motor car.
