DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS Though the ross would be sweet were it not called a rose Though evil, called good, would our peace still oppose Though gall would be bitter, were honey its name And a mouse, christened bear, were a mouse all the same; Yet, who has not felt the strong power of a word, The magic that thrills us, when some names are heard.—J. T. Watson. Moderation is its own reward. The path of honesty has no thorns to prick the conscience. Many a successful and respected man is the noblest work of a good wife. The phonograph is doing a vast deal to create good musical taste in this country. Liberty Bonds are able to look face value in the face and not blush with shame. Snobbishness is not a badge of distinction, but a symptom of vulgarity and small wit. Will S. Hays' experience in the post office department should make him letter-perfect in motion pictures. KEEP TRAFFIC HORRORS VISUALIZED If all drivers and all pedestrians would keep vividly before them the potential horrors of traffic—its deadly possibilities—there would be fewer tragedies of the public thoroughfares. It would be wholesome, indeed, if drivers and pedestrians, when in the thick of traffic, would visualize the possible horrors of just a slight deviation from the rules of carefulness and caution. In officially reporting 285 traffic deaths during the year 1921 in Los Angeles city, and 391 in Los Angeles county, Police Statistician L. W. Lyons of Los Angeles, remarks; These were deaths of men, women and children of all ages, and if their bodies were laid side by side they would cover the distance ranging from First and Hill to Second and Hill-sts—one entire block—a sight that would sicken the average autoist from ever driving another machine! This is the vision that the driver and the pedestrian inclined to recklessness should carry in mind. Let them think of a mangled row of bodies as long as a whole city block—the ghastly fruits of one year's trafic tragedies in one city alone! Think upon the horror, not to become morbit about it, but solemnly to resolve to do all possible to abate these horrors. APHYCUS CURE FOR EVEN SCALE HATCH Taken in time; aphycus is a sure cure for black scale of even hatch. This is the word received by Manager G. W. Sandilands from the California Fruit Growers Exchange, which yesterday issued a bulletin on "The Present Status of the Black Scale Parasite, Aphycus." Two millions of the parasites were liberated in southern California in 1921, says the statement. On about 1,000 acres of the Limoneira Company the scale was put under control by the aphycus. The Santa Paula Citrus Association also used it on the same acreage with success. Control is possible with from sixteen to twenty-five parasites per tree." Large trees severely infested with black scale of even hatch," says the bulletin," have not responded to control by this parasite However, where the infestation of even hatch scale is light, it has been reported there are possibilities of economic YUNGBLUTH OPENED UP 25 YEARS AGO "Roche wasn't built in a day." From there the store was moved to 147 West Center, where a new building was put up, and then to the present location at 145, Yungbluth meanwhile having taken over the entire business.
