HACIENDA COUNTRY CLUB FLOURISHING There was an unusually large attendance at the Hacienda Country club Saturday afternoon and many partook of the lunch served from 11:30 to 2 o'clock. The usual handicap contest took place and J. E. Killian of El Monte was the prize winner. From 1 to 5 in the afternoon polls were open for balloting for directors for the coming year and the selection of directors resulted as follows: Alphonzo E. Bell, Santa Fe Springs; G. W. Finch, Fullerton; J. E. Killian, El Monte; A. C. Maple, Whittler; George Dinton, Anaheim; Wallace Gregg, Whittier; Geo. H. Sargent, East Whittier; D. Jessurun, Anaheim; J. B. Chaffey, La Habra; Dr. G. E. Bailey, Whittier; C. A. Matteson, Whittier. The directors of the Hacienda Land Co., the holding company for the country club, will hold over as there was no quorum of the land company present. They are: J. B. Chaffey, president; G. L. McComber, vice president; Wallace Gregg, secretary; Alphonzo E. Bell, M. T. Owens, A. C. Johnson, Dr. Jesse Chilton, Geo. H. Sargent and F. W. Hadly. Wallace Gregg, secretary, makes an interesting report for both the land company and the country club. The Hacienda Land Co. has completed a 10-bole golf course to which many stockholders can testify; the water system was completed and did splendid service during the summer; the green and fairways, though new, are in splendid shape and a joy to play. FULLERTON CLASHES WITH NORWALK H. S. Fullerton high school basketball play Norwalk this evening, and Fullerton Junior college is scheduled to meet Chaffey. The Junior College line-up is as follows: William Glenn, Morace Blair, John Hawkins, George Meiser, Lee Hitchcock, Everett Hauser, Sherman Yost, Albert Helibrink, Albert Yorba, Renben Harris, Earl Stogsdill, Harold Votaw, Vorgil Smith and Howard Noble. Fullerton High school line-up follows: Capt. Jean Arroues, Oral Carpenter, Paul Dewhirst, Merrill Gregory, Fred Hezmahlach, Ralph Hill, Louis Kraemer, Leonard Lemke, Gil McDermott, Ed Salter and Ted Shipkey. POLO AT DEL MONTE An incitational Polo Tournament to be held at Del Monte Jan. 28th to February 5th marks the formal opening of the California season for this popular sport. Matches are scheduled every other day on the two Del Monte fields. Eastern, Army and California clubs have entered teams, and trophies will be awarded to winners of the Senior, Junior and Novice divisions. BIG LEAGUE MANAGERS NEW YORK, Jan. 18.-Managers of the big league clubs are announced here they are: American league—New York, Miller Huggins; Boston, Hugh Duffy; Philadelphia, Connie Madak; Washington, Clyde Milan; Chicago, Bill Gleason; St. Louis, Lee Fohl; Detroit, Ty Cobb; Cleveland, Tris Speaker. National league—John McGraw, New York; Brooklyn, Wilbert Robin- Wallace Gregg, secretary, makes an interesting report for both the land company and the country club. In part he reports: The Hacienda Land Co. has completed a 10-bole golf course to which many stockholders can testify; the water system was completed and did splendid service during the summer; the green and fairways, though new, are in splendid shape and a joy to play on; and the course—now under control of the club—is liberally used by the club members. The directors of the club and land company realize that many members are awaiting the erection of the club house to fully enjoy their club privileges. Through the activity of the directors of both companies, $25,000 has been subscribed as a loan to the land company with which to erect a club house—contingency of securing 250 members, (now 235). Both the subscriptions and memberships are in sight and the erection of a club house is contemplated in the early spring. Additions and improvements have been made on the buildings that came with the land. The barn is now used for lunch and tea rooms—lockers and showers and card room. The directors speak with pride of the harmony and enthusiasm existing among the members and hope by another year to put the Country Club on the basis originally planned. The Country club has taken over the upkeep and management of the golf course and improvements. Equipment has been purchased (and more is needed) to care for the course. The greens and fairways are kept in splendid condition and will continue to get better as the grass grows older. Weeds and brush have been cleared where needed, trails and bridges built, tees constructed, drinking fountains supplied, additional furniture added to the card and tea rooms with the idea of getting the most for the members under the present stage of development. Tea is served by the ladies on certain afternoons and Saturday noon lunches for the men. Sweepatakes for the members who wish to compete for prizes are staged Saturday afternoons. The membership of the club is now 235, and in the near future will reach 250, which will enable the Land Co. to take advantage of the $25,000 already subscribed and to be used when the membership has been secured and to begin the erection of a club house. The club has provided lockers which are to be rented to members, applications to be made to the secretary. With the added interest of the members in the benefits of the course and the substantial help they have given in securing new members for the club and with the usual amount of hard work the club should make a good showing for its labors in the erection of a club house and generally improving of the course during the year 1922. Mr. Otto William, who has completed a cross country tour of Germany on his waterwheel. From the north of Germany Herr William proceeded along the principal waterways to South Germany, attracting crowds along the route. The contrivance is similar to an ordinary bicycle, except that paddles, attached to the gear, propel the machine. The prime essential is a good supply of leg power. Center St. Phone 581 GROWERS PLANNING BEET YIELD BOOST Beet production is not going to continue at a loss if the So Cal. producers can remedy the situation. This was made evident today when the Orange-co farm bureau office announced that farm centers and the beet growers' department would make efforts to remedy the situation. At a meeting of the Buena Park farm center the members voted to co-operate with the association composed of beet growers in Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura counties in efforts to obtain increased yield. The Buena Park members decided to establish a test plot and to make use of grape cuttings, in an effort to eradicate from the soil those properties which prevent the successful growth of beets. Test work will be done under the direction of Assistant Farm Advisor Floyd Scott. Dr. R. R. Snowden, Los Angeles chemist, was today in consultation with Farm Advisor H. E. Wahlberg and farm bureau members. Dr. Snowden was scheduled to assist the farm extension officials in establishing test plots for fertilizer demonstration. It is hoped by the use of improved fertilizer, to increase beet production considerably. One test plot will be established in Garden Grove and another on South Main-st. Santa Ana. Other locations have not been chosen. DEBT REFUNDING PLAN WANTED — Rough dry washing to do at home. Inquire 416 So. Palm-st. WANTED — Housekeeper, inquire 214 E. Alberta. Phone 513-W.
