DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
The insate mind, but from without supplied,
Languishes on a weak, imperfect food;
If sustenance more spiritual be desired,
With flame consuming on itself 'twil brood. — Sir E. Brydges.
Why not see the good and the beautiful in human nature, as well as in Nature?
General Dawes, it seems at this distance, has knocked a few staves out of the congressional "pork barrel."
When "the front door of the Nation" is mentioned, these days, thoughts instinctively turn to California.
If you must resolve on New Year's, make your resolution more substantial than an icicle on a sunny day.
Sympathize with those who are involuntarily out of work. Do not embarrass them with charity, but give them help to obtain employment.
Dense growth of forest trees in watershed mountains and canyons would greatly ameliorate flood conditions, even when storms are hardest.
Some women speak of making a career for themselves by not marrying just as though being a good home-maker is not an honorable and creditable career for a woman.
COMBAT CRIME WITH THE EDUCATOR'S WEAPON
Raise high the torch of education; light the dark places with knowledge seasoned with training in good citizenship, and the waves of crime would be halted, is the earnest conviction expressed by Cleveland Moffett, noted writer, speaking before high school teachers in Los Angeles. Mr. Moffett advocates using the high school and the church buildings/large cities to combat crime. He holds that these edifices should never be empty. He favors lectures day and night on phases of good citizenship, in schools and in churches. "These buildings," he said, "should be kept working all the time in the fight against evil and ignorant activities that never languish."
These suggestions, coming from a thoughtful, able man of wide experience and keen observation, deserve attention. The force of vice and crime work day and night, as Mr. Moffett says. They must be fought tirelessly, if headway is to be made against them. And they must be fought by other methods than the guns and clubs of policemen, necessary through these are. Education and moral training and the indoctrinating of good citizenship impulses must proceed unceasingly, or the powers of darkness will overcome them. "Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good." And the way to "overcome evil with good" is to teach goodness and to exemplify it in practice. The lives of honest, law-abiding, God-fearing men and women are in themselves inspirations to others to live uprightly.

OFFER BONUS FOR BUENA PARK LEASE
With the Oil Operators
Excitement at Buena Park has been given another boost by the offer of $15,000 bonus for the 38 acre Lovett property. The General Petroleum made the offer and intends getting in with the Standard Oil Company in this new prospective field.
Five wells will double the present production of the Long Beach field. The five new wells ready to bring in are all promising and will probably increase the Signal Hill output three thousand barrels. The Jerjins well formerly known as the National Crude, stopped drilling at 3300 and is being tubed for production. With 314 feet of oil sand in the hole Jerjins No. 1 should make the biggest producer yet on the Hill.
Jack McKeon has succeeded in shutting off the water in Oceanic No. 1 and this well is now drilling into production. At 3300 feet the Oceanic shows lots of oil and there is little doubt that it will make a nice well.
The Shell Company has some 17 wells drilling. Of these Alamitos No. 2 set 3380 feet of 8-in and has all the earmarks of strong production. Alamitos No. 1; the discovery well, cleaned out and put back on the pump is producing steadily at 275 barrels, Church No. 1 at 2600 is showing a lot of oil and gas.
The San Martenas Oil Co. has the big Well Booth No. 1 recounted at 3561, and Freeman No. 1 at 3135, Booth No. 1 is good for 1500 barrels and Freeman will make 400.
The United Oil Co. has two wells on the Dennel property looking like big production Dennil No. 1 at 2800 is showing oil, and Dennil No. 2 at 3000 feet is showing lots of oil and gas and looks like a big well.
Huntington Beach in spite of the fact that a greater part of the field has been submerged in water for ten days is bringing in new producers and new wells start drilling.
R. W. Edens placed his Syndicate No. 1 on production yesterday. The new well started off at 200 barrels. The oil is free from water and the well, while making heavy oil for a on it. This big well adds another laurel to the phenomenal success of the Federal Drilling Co.
The Petroleum Midway washed out Elliott No. 1 at 2936 and the well started flowing at about 59 barrels.
The Rhoads Oil Co. recovered its No. 2 and put it back on production a 400 barrel well. The well was redrilled and cleaned out to 2378.
The Standard Oil Co. brought in a 100 barrel well at Huntington No. E-3. Drilled to 2695 the well started off flowing by heads. It will be remembered that E-3 was formerly the Bola Chica Oil Co's Augur No. 1.
The Sun Oil Co. has resumed work on No. 1 and will deopen No. 4. No. 1 has stood idle for months at 2436, and No. 3 produced at the rate of 175 barrels at 2300 feet.
Richfield is scheduled to have another deep producer soon. The Clark Oil Co's Hugo Netxell No. 1 drilling at 4400 feet is in the oil sand and looks like that it will make a well.
The Clark well started off with the original Richfield excitement almost three years ago.
The Petroleum Midway has installed the McVoy Screen pipe in the deep Richfield-Yorba well drilled to 4895 feet and the test well is ready to produce if it will. Success of the Petroleum Midway's well will increase the deep drilling work in Richfield.
The Ridge Oil Co. is now drilling thru cap rock at 4540 and the outlook for a well is being watched with great interest. This deep well is checking out about 300 feet deeper than other deep wells drilled at Richfield.
Seal Bench is determined to get into the oil lime light. The Seal Beach Oil Co. has completed a rig for the first test well and drilling is scheduled to commence in about ten days. The location of the well is considered with some favor. Operators are beginning to think that the chances for a field at Seal Beach is as good as Huntington Beach has turned out to be.
Actual drilling started on the B & M Oil Co's Belmont tract. The Federal Drilling Co having taken the contract to find oil if the oil is there to be found.
The Dolke-Thomas Syndicate has on it. This big well adds another laurel to the phenomenal success of the Federal Drilling Co.

R. W. Edens placed his Syndicate No. 1 on production yesterday. The new well started off at 200 barrels. The oil is free from water and the well, while making heavy oil for a few days will eventually settle down and make a nice producer.
Wm. Kammerer brought in a 200 barrel well for the Holly Sugar Co. at 3540 ft. The well came in prematurely. Balling down for a water test, the oil came in and the well started flowing. It will be necessary to cut the well on a production test for water for a few days.
The chances for the General Petroleum getting a producer at the Community No. 1 grow slimmer every day. The drilling is now at 4400 and the hard shell is not showing any indications of oil. A hundred feet more hole will be drilled before abandoning.
E. J. Miley's No. 2 brought in the latter part of last week is one of the nicest wells in the field. At 2752 this well is flowing 650 barrels. No. 1 has increased its production from 500 to 625. No. 3 set the 8-in at 2580 and looks like another 600 barrel well.
Jim O'Donnell has a thousand barrel well at Huntington Beach O'Donnell No. 1 completed at 3741 started to flow before all the oil string could be installed. The well is making such a strong flow that there is doubts if any more work can be done
The Union Oil Co. is moving fast with 8 wells drilling. Bell No. 1 continues to flow its 400 barrels daily. Bell No. 2 and 3 are drilling. Meyer No. 5 at 4977 is drilling out the cement and will go on down.
Other companies now drilling at Santa Fe Springs are the Central, Fullerton, General Petroleum, Nevada Ventura, Petroleum Midway, Shell and the Wilshire Oil Company.
At Montebello the Arcadia Oil Co. has made 3100 feet of hole and is finding grey shale and sand. The showings at 3300 have not continued and the outlook is not so promising.
The Comanche Oil Co.'s Manly now drilling at 3350 is in the oil sand and looking very good. Cleaning out work on the Calking started a few days ago. It will not be long before the Comanche Oil Co. will be listed as one of the Montebello field producers.
The Interstate Oil Co. has gone back to Montebello field and will attempt to redrill and put on production a well started some three years ago. Interstate No. 1 was drilled to 3358 but did not get down to the oil sands.
In the Puente Hills the Brandeen Oil Co. is pulling out the 6-in and will recement the test well on the Getty lease.
The performance of their cars gives them full credit for doubling the business and states that with the thousands of new owners added this year that the slogan will apply just as well for 1922 as it did for 1921.

PRICELESS PAPERS KEPT IN SHRINE
WASHINGTON, D. C., Jan. 2, — Erection of a shrine in the library of Congress, the most beautiful building in the world, for the fundamental archives of the United States government—the originals of the Declaration of Independence and of the Constitution of the United States—where for the first time they can be viewed by the public, and easily accessible to every visitor to the national capital, is now being planned.
Dr. Herbert Puttnam, the librarian of Congress, contemplates having a bronze tabernacle built in the exhibition corridor over the front door of the library building facing the capitol, in such a way that these price-less documents will be protected from the fading influences of natural light and be adequately protected from vandals and yet so placed that no visitor can fail to see them.
WANT WATER SYSTEM DECLARED UTILITY
Theodore W. Bose, Flake L. Smith, Robert Geruring and J. Sebastian, farmers in Orange county, petitioned the railroad commission today to make an order declaring the water wells ad pumping plant owned by C. J. Klatt a public utility, and to fix rates for the water and prescribe service conditions. The applicants state that they had obtained water from Klatt up to September 1, when he refused to give further service.
