Moral Victory for W.-J. Over Calif. Wonder Team
Displaying an aggressiveness which could not be denied and playing through the struggle with eleven warriors Washington and Jefferson battled to a scoreless tie with California, undisputed champion of the Pacific coast conference, at Tournament park yesterday in the annual intersectional battle.
For hard, clean tackling and almost perfect blocking, the eastern eleven gave an exhibit unequalled on any gridiron in the east or middle west during the 1921 season. It was this aggressiveness combined with an everlasting fighting spirit which enabled W. and J. to win what it may well claim to be a moral victory.
The eastern eleven was better on offense and defense as is shown by the fact that W. and J. made seven first downs against two for California. The Bears, however had a decided advantage in punting as Archie Nisbet gained several yards on the exchanges, Harold Erickson the W. and J. back who handled punts, played the ball safe at all times but it generally took freakish bounds and rolled several yards in baseball fashion.
Breaks of the game favored California and on one if not two occasions, poor judgment was used. Near the end of the first half, there remained but two seconds to play when the ball rested on the eastern eleven's fifteen yard line. Irving Toomey, the Bear's back is considered a fairly reliable field goal kicker but his ability was passed up for a forward pass which was incomplete and the half ended while the ball was in the air.
As the game was played it was a moral victory for the Eastern eleven. Gridiron fans in this section had confidently expected the Bears to win by margins ranging from 7 to 35 points. The result plainly shows that two undefeated clevens always put up a great battle and that the winner cannot be determined with any degree of certainty in advance.
EDENS WILL DRILL FOR CAL.-MEX. PET.
Long Beach
R. W. Edens, pioneer developer of the Huntington Beach field, has taken a contract to drill the wells for the Cal-Mex Petroleum and Refining Co. The first well will be drilled on the north side of the field on the 9 acre lease located between California and Anderson-sts. Actual work is scheduled to start as soon as the weather and road conditions will allow it.
Due to some confusion with the Cal-Mex Oil and Refining Company the California-Mexican Petroleum Syndicate will change its name and will be known hence forth as the Henderson Oil Syndicate. H. C. Henderson president of the company is to be honored by having the Syndicate named after him. Henderson No. 2 over on the north side of the field spudded in and is now drilling. No. 1 continues to produce 450 a job at 2800 feet has been overcome and drilling is now going ahead at 2975. Bixby No. 2 is rigged up and ready to start drilling. Lomita No. 1 shows 1800 feet. L. B. T. & S. No. 1 is at 2600, and Sylvester No. 1 has been cemented at 2500. Fishing for 4-inch still continues on the Torrance well at 4485.
The Shell Co. cleaned out Alamitos No. 1 the discovery well to 2865 feet, put the rods and tubing back, and the production went from 300 to 600 barrels. Alamitos No. 2 at 3385 is taking core barrel samples and checking up on the formation. Alamitos No. 3 shows 3307 feet of hole. Alamitos No. 4 is 2400 in sand shale. Babb-Tucker and Goddard stand cemented. Cherry Hill No. 1 is rigging up. Horsch No. 1 deepening is at 2785 and in sand. Hutton No. 1 shows 1800 in brown shale. Jones No. 1 is rigging up. Operations at Maryin No. 1 have been suspended temporarily. Nesa No. 1 at 2775 is drilling iron on iron. Pickler is cleaning out at 2465. Stakemiller at 3035 is showing quite a lot of gas and may be the next well to blow out.

No. 1 continues to produce 450 a day.
The Crest Oil Co., No. 1 is in a rather serious condition. Two strings of pine hay partially telescoped, and the well will not be in production condition for some little time. It will be necessary to pull the 8-inch and do a lot of sweding and cleaning out. Crest Consolidated shows 2400 feet in sandy shale.
The J. J. Doyle well opposite the Oceanic's No. 1 will henceforth be known as the Doyle-Clune. Jack McKeon has spudded in and drilling is underway.
At 2400 feet the General Petroleum is running the core drill and getting some excellent oil showing sand samples. Drilling will probably be discontinued soon and the water string set. Bixby No. 1 set the 8-inch at 3275, where some minor showings were noticed.
Drilling in the oil sand and looking exceedingly good at 3225 Jergins No. 1 looks like the next producer on Signal Hill. Jergins No. 1 was formerly known as the National Crude. Jergins is an associate of W. R. Ramsey and intends to figure in California development.
The Oceanic is drilling out the cement today at 3316 and will be ready for the mining bureau's O. K. tomorrow. Indications look good for a shut off.
The Petroleum Midway's Ellis No. 1 at 2800 feet is drilling in a sandy shale that is carrying oil in quantity. The well at this point looks exceptionally good. MacDavid No. 1 shows a 1000 feet in the conglomerate. Griswold No. 1 is rigging up and Rosenfield No. 1 is a rig.
The Standard will not have to move the rig at Alamitos No. 1 and start another well. The bad fishing taking core barrel samples and checking up on the formation. Alamitos No. 3 shows 3307 feet of hole. Alamitos No. 4 is 2400 in sandy shale. Nesa No. 1 at 2775 is drilling on iron. Pickler is cleaning out at 2465. Stakemiler at 3035 is showing quite a lot of gas and may be the next well to blow out. Wilur No. 1 is making about 8 million feet of gas. About 40 barrels of 22 gravity oil is being separated by the gas trap at the Wilbur, Patton-Wilson No. 1 is at 2790 in the hard sand.
Drilling in the oil sand at 3100 the Sanberg Petroleum Co.'s No. 1 looks like a nice well. Co-operative No. 1 continues to produce at about a 100 barrels rate. It is the intention to deepen this well soon.
For the fourth time the Signal Hill Syndicate has cemented for a water shut of fand this time it looks like something has been accomplished. The re-cementing was done at 3246, the bottom of the hole is 3384.
Jack McKeon has started rigging up on the Themescal's No. 1, and will be drilling before the end of the week. The Themescal No. 1 is located near the Petroleum Midway's Ellis and looks like a sure winner.
The United Oil Co has things going nicely on top of the Hill. Denni No. 1 at 2735 is in the oil sand and looks like a "million". Deni No. 2 had no difficulty in getting a shut off at 2914 and is ready to drill into the oil sand. Jones No. 1 set 465 feet of 15½.
The Union Oil Co has Hart No. 1 rigged up and will probably start drilling before the end of the week.
The San Martenas Oil Co.'s Booth No. 1 made a wonderful showing last week by coming back on production at 2000 barrels. The well was allowed to produce one day only, when the water broke in on it and shut off the oil flow. Cleaning out for re-cementing is now underway. Freeman No. 2 pumps about 130 barrels of fluid. Of this amount half is water. More work is contemplated on this well soon.

ORANGE GROVES
HAVE WE HAD
A MORE ATTRACTIVE
OFFERING
THAN THIS LITTLE GROVE
AND HOME
— Domestic circumstances make it possible for us to give you the opportunity to acquire this grove at a figure which is considerably less than it is actually worth today. A large cash payment is not required, some exchange will be considered if really good, and very liberal terms may be arranged on the balance.
— The price is such that anyone should be able to turn right around, immediately after selling off the present large crop, and get more for the place than it is now costing with the crop included. Or, if the purchaser is one who desires the place for a permanent home, and it is a splendid one, he may have the satisfaction of knowing that he got a strictly "toppy" grove at a price that many have paid for very ordinary properties.
— If you are one of those who have been thinking that they would have a grove if they would only "come down," or if you are sorry you did not buy before they "went up," we want you to see this property at the present price.
