S. A. Coach Picks Best Orange League Players
By H. MARVIN (Spud) MORRISON
It's hard for a coach to see men on other teams that can compare with those of his own team, and offering this as an apology for any seemingly mistrusts that I may choose I shall set out to pick the men, who, in my opinion, are the best football players in their respective positions in the Orange league this year.
Left Eid
Newton Stark of Santa Ana is the best defensive high school end I have been in years. His tackling is perfect and he hits hard. His blocking in interference is hard to beat. He knows the game, can snag passes, and most of all has a wonderful fighting spirit. Stark's only fault is his lack of speed to get him down the field under punts. Stark was the choice of a Los Angeles expert and I think he is worthy of the choice.
Left End
Three men are near a par for this berth—Armstrong of Santa Ana, Shipke of Fullerton, and Coffman of Santa Ana. Shipke has a great fighting spirit and is into every play. For hard tackling and offensive play Coffman has the edge, while Armstrong has speed, handles passes well, tackles clean, and is a hard worker. Armstrong's natural ability will make him a good college player in the next few years.
Left Tackle
Earl of Fullerton and Harry Le-Bard of Santa Ana, are my choice. Le Bard for his wiry fight and spirit, and for his speed. He plays a clean, hard game and he is the type of man that a coach enjoys working with. Harry deserves recognition on the all-Southern squad. Earl is not to be deprived of a berth. His greatest asset is his bulldog determination. He is a fighter and his fight is contagious with his teammates.
Right Tackle
Bell and Stevens of Santa Ana, and Schowalter of Orange. Schowalter was a bulwark of defense for the Orange line and deserves much credit for his fighting spirit, though he
Quarterback
A quarterback can make or break no team. Spirit and fight are three-fourths of any team's success. A quarterback who can hold a team together because of his personality has taken the first step towards making that team a success. Headwork, field generalship, and the playing ability of a quarterback came as secondary to his ability to hold the team together as a machine, all working unselfishly toward one him, and giving everything they have to the success of that team. A team is unbeatable whose spirit, fight and morale are unbeatable, and the quarter who can instil these qualities in a team has accomplished the most essential thing.
When a quarter in addition to this has a wonderfully clear head, knows the game, can make yards when his backs cannot, can cleverly execute the forward pass, runs pants well, and above all, can stand up under an hour of severe punishment and never make a whimper, and doesn't know what it is to get hurt, then you have a quarterback that cannot be beat.
Just such a quarter-back is this young man Wilcox. He was the best quarter back on high school gridirons in the south this year. Lack of weight is a handicap, but, here, true to the old maximum, "the best quality is in small packages."
Halfbacks
Williams and Knight of Santa Ana, McDermott of Fullerton, and Cook of Anahiem. Cook is the speediest of this quartette, and would be a wonder if he were on a team that would give him a chance to show his wares McDermott is a hard and heky player and a good gasser. Williams is perhaps the best all-round man of the group. His ability to pass and snag forwards, his speed, blocking and hard trickling and his spirit make his indispensable to any team. Knight
RIGHT TACKLE
Bell and Stevens of Santa Ana, and Schowalter of Orange. Schwaltler was a bulwark of defense for the Orange line and deserves much credit for his fighting spirit, though he played on a losing team. Stevens, a late arrival in the season, played good ball and smashed things right and left when he was given an opportunity to play. Though this was Bell's first year at a tackle position he improved with each game, and his playing was conspicuous enough in the San Diego game for a Los Angeles paper to give him a berth on its all-Southern. Bell has the build and will make some college a splendid player. His brother is now playing with California's wonder team.
LEFT AND RIGHT GUARD
Elliott and Everett Best cannot be beaten for high school guards. Their undying spirit has been a big factor in Santa Ana's stone wall defense this year. Their untiring efforts and ceaseless training have helped greatly to mold the Santa Ana team together as a fighting machine. Here's to the "never-drying" spirit of the Beets. Both were considered all-Southern calibre by Los Angeles papers.
CENTER
Not a center in the south has come up to the remarkable playing of Cravath of Santa Ana. Cravath's uncanny sense of feeling out opponents plays before they are pulled stood him in strong as a defensive man. His initiative and aggressiveness make him the most valuable man on the defensive line. If the whole team possessed Cravath's scrap and initiative, it would have been a world-beater. Cravath was chosen all-Southern by 300 FT. OF CEMENT LODGED IN 3-INCH NEWPORT
Weather conditions did not permit getting much information from the Newport field. The Interstate Oil Co. found about 300 feet of cement lodged in the three-inch perforation at Mesa No. 1. This cement is being drilled but and a water test will be made early this week. Norris No. 1 is drilling at 2355' in the sandy brown shale. Heights No. 1 set 280 feet of 15'1-2' and still stands cemented.
The last report from the Long Beach Consolidated was to the effect that an oil sand had been struck at 2400 feet and would be tested out. Rain prevented a visit to the well and the oil sand report could not be verified.
The latest available information from the Wucherer and Gray interests gave No. 1 drilling at 3057 in the brown shale. The W. A. G. Oil Co. No. 1 stands cemented at 3000 in ten-inch. The W. G. R. Petroleum Co. is at 945 in shale and clay. The San Joaquin Hills Oil Co. spudded in and made 200 feet of note.

ANGEL'S HAIR IS PRODUCT OF GROUNDS
MADRID, Dec. 29—In Spain and the Canary Islands has long been grown a kind of gourd, the size of a small watermelon, green blotched with white, which is very good to eat.
It is called "pantama," and until recently botanists have supposed that it came from the far east.
It turns out, however, that this gourd is of American origin, and was eaten by the people of Mexico long before the days of Cortex and Montezuma, being known to them as "chila-cayote."
A curious thing about it is that its white flesh, when the gourd is cooked, resolves itself into long flaments resembling vermicelli. Cut in quarters and boiled the vegetable is then transferred to cold water, whereupon, with a little stirring, the pulp detaches itself from the rind and takes the form of slender threads, which may be served with soup, with milk, "au vinif" with cheese, or in various ways.
In Canary islands the vermicell-like flaments are converted into a delicious candy by putting them into boiling syrup and cooking until the syrup cracks in cold water. The candy thus made is pretty, transparent light yellow in color, and is called "angels' hair."
