The Orange County Plain Dealer An Independent Newspaper, Issued Every Afternoon Except Sunday R. W. BROWN, Manager PAUL V. HESTER, Editor Saturday afternoon in North Quincy, of Perry year 81, six months, $15k. Reserved at the Post Office of Anahahn, Calif., as second class matter. There may be critics who know better and more practical agreements for the krima conference to formulate. But if the critics know the better way, they are adopting carefully concealed. The United States, in all its foreign relations and in all its efforts to foster just peace throughout the world, is impressing every country and every people with the fact that it sincere, earnest and honest, and that it means business. Pray, "Give us this day our daily bread," and when this prayer is answered in abundance, share the bounty with the less fortunate who are in need of help. Overtimes one may answer another's prayer daily by giving for that others' aid at the proper time. The arms conference may be expected to get into deep water when it takes up the question of apportioning submarines. But, even so, the delegates eventually will come out with dry feet, on a basis of equitable agreement, there is reason to hope. Senator Reed descants upon the possibilities of the United States outbuilding all the great powers in naval expansion and becoming mistress of the seas, and he is scolding the Arms Conference for his work, which would stop naval competition and greatly reduce the naval armament of this country, of Great Britain and of Japan. It is curious to speculate as to what would really please this stormy petrel who represents—or misrepresents—Missouri in the Senate. He is a chronic opponent of about everything that is proposed which would foster peace throughout the world. U. S. THEASURY VIEWS ON BUSINESS STATUS There is no topic before the people that is discussed with keeper concern or with more of the flavor of human interest than the conditions and prospects in business and industry thrust out this country and all over the world. It is the absorbing theme in the home, in the place of business, and in the professional office. Views vary as to just when the return of economic normality may be expected. In this connection, the opinions of officials of the United States treasury department are of general interest. From that quarter comes prediction that there will be continued improvement in business conditions in this country and abroad. Those experts discern marked improvement in the world's business outlook. No immediate boom is forecast. Slow, but sure recovery in business conditions is forecast, however. Discussing the improvement that already has taken place in business and industry treasury officials say that these betterments have been due to natural causes and in the continued operation of natural readjustment a general improvement is to be expected. Strengthening of foreign exchange, particularly the rise in the pound sterling, is mentioned as an illustration of improvement abroad. The situation in many European countries admittedly is serious, but not desperate. That better feeling is held in the money market is evidenced by the fact that federal reserve re-discount rates and commercial rates have dropped. Other natural causes leading to economic improvement, cited by treasury officials, are fee-adjustments in prices and wages. HUNTINGTON B-2 OF S. O. HIGH GRAVITY Huntington Beach At 3670 feet Huntington No. 6 Amalgamated is being prepared to go on production. The well has made some oil, but as yet does not seem to get underway as it was expected. Huntington No. 6 looks like a 350 barrel well at best. Dennison No. 1 spudded in and started drilling. Powder No. 3 at 3425 is in white sand. Huntington No. 7 and Pierce No. 2 are rigging up. At Johnson No. 1 the Argonaut Oil Company got a nice showing of oil at 2597, pulled back to 2580 and set the 10-in. Turley No. 2 at 3245 is in shale and the formation is being watched closely by core drilling. Getting a nice clay to set pipe in at 2823 the Bolsa Chica Oil Corporation is getting ready to cement. CRUSADE AGAINST NEW YEAR'S BOOZER Tia Juana bootleggers and book runners who expect to reap a ripe harvest by supplying Los Angeles and San Francisco "joy parties" with fiery liquids for the annual booze fests on New Year's will meet with a warm reception if they attempt to prop their nefarious trade via the Orange-co highways, according to Shiff C.E. Jackson. The sheriff's office has known for several days that elaborate preparations were being made in the large cities for a "night of joy" when the old year ends. In Los Angeles it available care space for New Year's was sold out ten days ago. In S.F. Francisco seats are at a premium. These activities betoken prosperity for the booze-runner, according to Orange-co officers and the availous bootlegger ever on the lookout for "easy pickings", has laid plans accordingly. With his eye Tia Juana, which is perennially wary and his hopes centered on the large cities, which are proportionately dute he bides his time and hopeful awaits the witching hour when the evil dreams will come true. The Orange-co thoroughfares always considered in his plans is transporting the atrocious concessions that pass muster for whiskies and even now he is puzzling the brain to find ways and means of eliciting the wary guardians of the city who are employed to nip his amorous projects in the bud. "The fellows employ many unpleasant methods to run the barrier," said Sheriff Jackson, "as witness the case we had here when we fiscated 350 gallons of liquor trunks with copper containers." The cars, equipped with cunningly sealed receptacles behind the rear seats, were somewhat more elaborate than most of the cars used in booze running. "The booze-runners do not always attempt to cross the border with high-powered cars they use in daying across the Orange-co boulevard. Often they use a very ordinary car a worn-out Ford or a disreputable looking second-hand Maxwell. In this efforts to evade the customs officer... Huntington No. 6 looks like a 350 barrel well at best. Dennison No. 1 spudded and started drilling. Power No. The cementing at 2100 done a number of times failed to get the water shut off. The Bolsa Chica Oil Co. after an absence of several months from Huntington Beach has returned to the field and is drilling at Augur No. 2. It is understood that this company means business now and has come back to make a showing. Edena Syndicate No. 1 is now bone dry and goes on production today. Perkins cemented the 8-in. at 2302 and made a job. The Edena Syndicate will undoubtedly make a nice well. Predictions on the production run from 3 to 1 hundred barrels. A lot of people thought Edens couldn't make a well, out of the Syndicate. They will think differently now. Huff No. 1 the Eddystone's deep test well, failed to get a shut off at 4381 and has been re-cemented. The General Petroleum has decided to continue the drilling on Community No. 1 to 4300 and if oil is not found drilling will be discontinued. At 4125 the formation shows hard shell. The Gypsy Syndicate has No. 3 drilling out the cement at 2322 and this well will be on production in about ten days. No. 1 continues to pump 225 barrels and No. 2 makes 200 barrels. The Huntington Central Oil Co's No. 1 is now a steady producer at 250 barrels. The cement is being drilled out at No. 2 and something of interest will be known about this well in a few days. The cementing was done in the 8-in. at 3651. Jameson No. 1 brought in last week is on the air lift and continues to make about 125 barrels. The air lift is getting rid of a lot of sand and oblates the continual pulling of rods and tubing and cleaning out. The air lift will undoubtedly prove a big help for the field. At 4002 Huntington Union No. 1 is drilling in sandy shale and showing a hard sand that carries the best oil colors the well has yet exhibited. Drilling is going nicely and the outlook is hopeful. In this great city which has no end; Yet days go by and weeks rush on. And before I know it a year is gone And I never see my old friends face; For Life is a swift and terrible race. He knows I like him just as well. As in the days when I rang his bell And he rang mine. We were youngger then; And now we are busy, tired men— Tired with playing a foolish game; Tired with trying to make a name. "Tomorrow," I say, "I will call on Jim Just to show that I'm thinking of him." But tomorrow comes—and tomorrow goes! And the distance between us grows and grows. Around the corner!—yet miles away "Here's a telegram sir," Jim died today! And that's what we get—yet deserve in the end— Around the corner a vanished friend. —Charles Hanson Towne, Saturday Evening Post. SUGGEST CHANGE IN HIGH SCHOOL HOURS That there is some talk among parents of requesting the Santa Ana school authorities to take up the high school there an hour later in the morning and close an hour later in the afternoon was disclosed at the annual meeting of the Santa Ana Ministerial union. The Rev. John Olivar, president of the club and pastor of the First Methodist church, reported that the matter had been taken up with him by a member of the W.C.T.U. Complaint is made on present hours because it is declared pupils have too much time on the streets after school closes. The union took no action on the matter as members were not familiar with the reasons for the early morning opening. There was no discussion.
