LAGUNA OIL ASSN.
IN SAND AT 3300
Newport
Drilling on the Laguna Oil Assn's well is now at 3300 feet in sand. The six inch is being carried for a suitable place to make another attempt to shut off water.
The H. T. K. & Syndicate found that it did not have a water job at 2446 and re-cemented the 8-in. The bottom of the hole is 3150.
Drilling on the Nu Sania Oil Co.'s No 1 is close to 3700 feet. The prevailing formation for the past 100 feet has been blue shale.
Developments on the Wuciferer-Gray several properties to date is as follows. No. 1 is drilling at 3050-in brown shale. The ton inch was set at W. A. G. Petroleum and is ready to drill out and test water. W. G. R. Petroleum Company No. 1 is at 900 ft. in clay and shale.
The Interstate Oil Co. at Mesa No. 1 is perforating the 3-in from 3000 to 3285 and will make a water test. No oil is expected in this well. The idea is to find out if it is possible to shut off the water. This well has been cemented and re-cemented a number of times.
At 3400 feet the Long Beach Consolidated struck what looks like an oil bearing sand. The well is being bailed down and the sand will be tried out for possible production. The showing at 3400 is the best that the Long Beach Consolidated has had and it has caused some little excitement.
The best way to lie when sleeping is on the right side.

GOTHAM CONDUCTORS SOON LEARN "TYPES"
NEW YORK, Dec. 23—Street car conductors become philosophers even though their path in life is more or less laid out for them. They come to know "types". Take the one on Grand-st—the one who operates about theatre time. Whenever certain types board his car he smiles pleasantly in an authoritative fashion. "Getting off at the Neighborhood Players?" For the unenlightened I will say that the Neighborhood Playhouse on Grand-st, probably the most remote theatre in New York but whose productions are always worth the trip. His judgment is variable, and the persons addressed always look surprised and pleased to admit that he has guessed their destination. It would be interesting to know how he can determine these people. Those attending this theatre go from the very well dressed, smart people to the serious but shabby students of the theatre. Nevertheless he guesses right so much of the time that one must attribute him with an unusual knack.

U. S. ARMY HEAD ASKS ARMENIAN AID
WASHINGTON, Dec. 23.—Major General James G. Harbord, recently appointed General Pershing's assistant Chief of Staff, has gone on record in support of the work of the Near East Relief in Armenia. He says, in a letter to the Near East Relief:
"Of all the heart-breaking distress that exists in other countries, I believe that the Near East situation should most appeal to our charitable people. There are many thousands of helpless orphans—children of Christian parents in a Moslem land, who must be helped by our people if they are to survive. The Armenians have preserved their race; their religion and their language under conditions of distress for over a thousand years. They are worthy of a better fate than to perish, and I believe that will be their fate without substantial financial and moral support from the good people of our country.
"J. G. HARBORD,
"Major General, U. S. Army."
General Harbord is one of the trustees of the Near East Relief organization, now making a general appeal for funds to continue its work among the destitute of Bible lands.

CHILDREN TAUGHT TO UTILIZE WOOL
LONDON, Dec. 23.—The Scotch may be touted as the thriftiest folk on earth but here is an instance where the Welsh go them a bit better.
Sheep rearing is the chief industry near one Welsh village and a considerable quantity of waste and loose wool is to be found on the fences, and hedges and on the ground on the hillside where the sheep graze. The children of the village have been taught to collect this wool and take it to school with them. There it is washed by a special process, dyed, carded and spun.
The yarn thus secured is used to knit into scarfs, sweaters, caps, gloves, stockings, etc., for the school children.
