GARDEN GROVE HI LITTLE, BUT, OH, MY! Oil derricks are not the only things springing up at Garden Grove. They've started a high school over at the Grove and in a few years Garden Grove will be on the map, athletically speaking, according to the predictions of Coach Merritt Sloniker. The high school is now in its first year and Sloniker had none but freshmen from which to organize his teams, but he has just closed a successful football season and is looking forward to more success in both basketball and track. Sloniker, in addition to coaching all branches of athletics, is the manual training teacher and has a fair-sized job on his hands, but despite this handicap he declares Garden Grove is going to become a contender in all branches of athletics. At the present time Sloniker is devoting all of his coaching time to whipping a basketball team into shape for the opening of the second team league on January 6. He only has 32 boy students from which to pick his teams, but he has picked nine youngsters for basketball from which he expects to develop a quilt that will make any second league team travel at high speed to grab the long end of the score. The team lines up as follows: Jesse Messnerall, captain and center; Francis Russell and Mike Morrill, forwards; Newton Devins, Everett Emerson and Floyd Rister, guards. His substitutes are Ben Richey, Carl Korn and Wallace Geren. Sloniker entered these youngsters in the second team league only to find later that they did not average high enough in weight for the league, but he is willing to abide by his first decision and will send his boys into action against youngsters who outweigh them considerably. The team should have been entered in the 130 pound class, he says. Sloniker came to Garden Grove from Stout Institute, Wisconsin, a manual training school. He took a keen interest in athletics there and fitted himself for coaching in addition to the teaching of manual training. The girls in the Garden Grove school are also taking an active interest in athletics and the school has U. S. PROBE AFTER CAPTURE OF BOOZE That the capture by Sheriff C. E. Jackson and his men of two whisky-laden automobiles and four persons who were alleged to have been transporting the liquor north from the Mexican border Nov. 25, may have far-reaching effect in quelling the illicit liquor traffic of So. Cal., was indicated today in dispatches from Los Angeles, stating that a federal grand jury probe resulting from the arrest included investigation not only of the four prisoners captured in this county, but the border customs officials as well. How the customs officials happened to allow two such loads of liquor to escape detection by the customs inspectors, even though concealed as cleverly as it was in trunks and secret compartments in the cars, is what the grand jury wants to know. At least one secret indictment has been returned, it was stated from Los Angeles. That a prominent motion picture actress was among the quartette captured with the two cars by local officers at Irvine, was asserted in the Los Angeles advises. Her name was concealed by the officials conducting the probe, but is known in Santa Ana, where she gave it as Doris McDonald at the time of her arrest. Captured with Miss McDonald was Cora Scotland, said to be a well-known figure in Tia Juana, and Glinda Smith and J. H. Harris, San Diego business men, Cora Scotland, when arrested here, gave the name of Cora Harris and posed as the wife of J. H. Harris. More than 200 gallons of liquor were found in the two automobiles, a Cadillac and a Studebaker, and were turned over to Customs Officers O. C. Macumber, W. H. Woolmar and W. B. Evans, of San Diego. This capture it is said, has led to a widespread investigation along the border which is expected to result in stamping out the recent activities of whiskey runners who have been flooding this part of the state with liquor. The four whom Sheriff Jackson and his deputies captured at Irvine were returned to San Diego, where they were released on $1000 ball each, pending their preliminary hearing. but he is willing to abide by his first decision and will send his boys into action against youngsters who outweigh them considerably. The team should have been entered in the 120 pound class, he says. Sloniker came to Garden Grove from Stout Institute, Wisconsin, a manual training school. He took a keen interest in athletics there and fitted himself for coaching in addition to the teaching of manual training. The girls in the Garden Grove school are also taking an active interest in athletics and the school has entered a team in the girls' basketball league. Miss Frances Barbour is in charge of the girls' athletic training department. Garden Grove hopes to have a four year high school next year. If this hope becomes a reality, Sloniker's worries will be over so far as having numbers from which to pick his teams concerned. The additional students would probably be drawn from the Santa Ana and Anaheim schools and would tend to weaken athletics at those schools and increase it at Garden Grove. With several new high schools springing up in the county, Sloniker is of the opinion that some time Orange county will boast of an exclusive county league in which competition will be keen and interest aroused to the highest pitch. WALTER JOHNSON'S DAUGHTER BURIED Yesterday's news dispatches carried an item to the effect that the three-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Johnson had died at the family home in Coffeyville, Kansas. The father of the little girl is the famous baseball pitcher, connected for so many years with the Washington club, in the American League, which is sufficient to enlist the interest and sympathy of every baseball fan in the country. For residents of Anaheim district, however, the item has a double interest from the fact that the boyhood home of the great pitcher, whose marvellous speed has been the wonder of the game for years, was at Olinda, and it was there he learned the rudiments of the game in which he afterward achieved fame and fortune. It was while pitching for a team of Olinda oilworkers, as a chunk of a boy, that he attracted the attention of baseball scouts, and he was soon under an engagement to work in professional ball, his first contract being with a team at Weiser, Idaho. His progress up the ladder since that time is a matter of common knowledge. OIL FROM MEXICO Mexico supplied the world with nearly 25 per cent of its petroleum last year. Witman, Eyesight Specialist. URGE MERCHANTS HELP TRANSIT CO. The C. of C. up to noon today had obtained about $200, pledged for payment during the next four months, to subsidize the Anaheim Motor Transit Co., whose business has been seriously cut into by the partial shutdown of the Anaheim Sugar Factory. Contributors are: Joseph Stroup, Heying Bros., Anaheim Beef Co., and Anaheim Sugar Co., and George Dunton, ten dollars each; and George B. Peck, five dollars per month for four months. The C. of C. has issued this letter, quoted in part: TO ANAHEIM MERCHANTS: "Do you believe in continuing the Anaheim Transit Company's bushes within our city limits? If so, we must all help this undertaking for the next four months with a small subsidy, or it will have to go out of business. During the past week, local support was so small that the manager determined to take the service off, thus canceling his permission from the California railroad commission, to operate. It would be difficult to get another company started and we know that there is no question of this line making a good living, once the packing houses are in operation. The C. of C. has issued strips of 10, 5c coupon fare tickets each, of which a canceled sample is enclosed. Manager Carpenter of the Anaheim Transit Co. offers to issue these strips to merchants who subscribe toward keeping the line running, giving value in coupons for each dollar paid in. This is a fair proposition. There is no doubt this line has affected local trading favorably. On last Friday, when a special advertising campaign caused a merchant to give prizes, the Center-st line of this company did seven times the usual volume of business. This shows great usefulness, on the part of the buses. Please do not wait until you are solicited in this matter, but telephone "665" and advise what you would be willing to do in the way of subscribing outright or buying coupon tickets which can be given to your customers, under any plan you may devise."
