Anaheim Elks lost their first winter baseball game yesterday afternoon at Commonwealth park, Fullerton, to Long Beach Elks by the score of 7-6. The defeat may be laid to some loose playing due to the tryout of several recruits to the Anaheim lineup. At that, some of the recruits looked very good. For instance, Calhahan, who played centerfield, has the carmarks of a ball player. He looks mighty good at the bat. He lined out a pretty single and double in three times up yesterday, and counted one score.
Then there was P. Schrott, Brookhurst boy, who lined out a pretty double and got on by walk and fielder's choice two other times. He trotted across the plate three times. One time he laid down a pretty sacrifice.
His brother, L. Schrott, started the game in the pitcher's box. However, it was his first baseball in two years and he was replaced by the old reliable Hughes in the second inning, after walking three men and permitting two doubles and three runs in the first. Schrott, the twirler, is a left-hander and with experience should prove very effective.
Hughes had a bad inning in the fourth, when the seasiders laid down three buns in a row which Harry couldn't quite get hold of. An error, a couple of wild throws and a double were responsible for four scores.
In the six innings he was on the mount, Hughes fanned 12, and average of two per inning.
Next Sunday, the Anaheim team will take on the fast Alexander Giants, the champ negro team of Los Angeles. If local fans show their appreciation for lightning fast baseball, in every way equivalent to the Pacific Coast league brand, by attending Sunday there will be a three game series with the colored flashes.

Capital Punishment Discussion Revived
Jhos H. Ince presents "Mother O'Mine"
The widely-discussed question of capital punishment and its abolition has been revived in many quarters by the appearance of Thomas H. Ince's stirring melodrama, "Mother O'Mine," which opens at the California Theatre tomorrow.
For more than half a century the abolition of capital punishment has been an issue in American public life. Several states have dispensed with the death sentence as the supreme penalty for a crime, and one or two of these states have returned to the noose and the electric chair as the only effective means of both punishing and diminishing murder.
In "Mother O'Mine," the abolitionists point out a striking example of the danger of the state assuming to take the life of its major criminals.
Robert Sheldon, the leading character of the drama, falls into an altercation with his employer, the result of the latter's vicious slandering of the boy's mother. A thrilling fight follows in which the elder man manages to get a revolver from the drawer of a table. The boy, fighting for his life forces the gun from his employer's hand, and, falling to the floor, it is accidentally discharged, fatally wounding its owner.
The only witness to this affray is the mistress of the slain man, who, in spite of her waywardness, is sincerely devoted to him. She promises to avenge his death, and on the witness stand perjures herself, stating that the boy was the murderer, thereby securing his conviction and sentence to the electric chair.
There is apparently no hope for the condemned lad. His mother, however, intervenes and her determination and loyalty draw a confession from the guilty woman. Even then, with but a few hours remaining before the hour of execution, only the resourcefulness of the district attorney and a mad ride through a raging storm effect the boy's release as he is strapped to the death chair.
The decrivers of capital punishment who have seen the Ince drama advance this episode, which has been duplicated in real life when circumstantial evidence has brought men to their dooh, as an argument in support of their demand for doing away with the electric chair and the gallows.
There are many instances on record, they declare, where innocent men and women have suffered the death penalty when subsequent events proved their innocence, and they argue that "Mother O'Mine" is a vivid dramatic example of the fallacy of the system now generally in vogue.

Any day on the school grounds you may hear the children's lusty yell:
"Rah, Rah, Rah! ha, ha, ha,
We're the school of Paralta!
Happy, lucky, happy, lucky,
I should smile!
We've ben it for quite a while,
Hear us, hear us, ha ha, ha,
We're the school of Peralta!
Hurrah, hurrah!
