URGE DIVISION OF SHORTHAUL FREIGHT Divide the short-haul freight business more equitably between the railways and the truck companies and make the latter pay for the damage they are causing the highways. This sentiment, albeit at the meeting on Wednesday evening in Orange of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, receives a good deal of support from local merchants, especially furniture and hardware dealers, who ship by rail rather than truck. M. W. Martenet said he preferred the roads to the truck companies because he got his freight more promptly, the railways were more liable in case of loss or breakage and they gave cheaper rates. Martenet does his own hauling from the station. Nine-tenths of his freight comes here by rail, most of it from Los Angeles. The West Coast Hardware Syndicate at Los Angeles appears to prefer the roads to the truck companies. H. E. W. Barnes of the Stroup Barues Furniture company, said he shipped nothing whatever by truck. He said the railways took better care of goods shipped, asked cheaper rates and looked after claims for delays, losses and breakages more thoroughly. Furthermore, said Barnes, the roads not only helped develop the country, but maintained offices and gave employment to many residents of communities where they were located. Albert Graham, of the Graham Furniture company, said he shipped most of his goods here by rail and preferred the roads to the truck companies. Graham was not sure that the roads were cheaper than the truck companies for all classes of goods handled by the furniture dealers. Graham declared that the roads not only paid the taxes and helped to a large extent to build and maintain the highways, to say nothing of having purchased rights of way wherever they were located, but did more by far than the truck companies for the communities which they touched. It didn't seem square, said Graham, to desert the railroads after "One Arabian Night" is the feature again today at the California. There is also a waudeville program. "The Miracle of the Jungle" is the feature at the Fairyland. The Poppy Girls' Revue is also seen. Buena Park News BUENA PARK, Dec. 10.—(Spl.) Mr. C. J. Allen left on Wednesday morning for Palm Springs to recuperate from a recent illness. Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Warren and son Tom motored to Los Angeles on Wednesday. Mrs. R. Z. Adams of Los Angeles, Mrs. Ella R. Adams and Miss Ethel Robeson were luncheon guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Robeson on Wednesday. Mr. J. W. Bishop of Long Beach motored up to attend Masonic lodge on Thursday evening. CONDENSED MILK CONQUERS CHINA SEATTLE, Dec. 12. — American dairies are the latest invasion of China, although the cows are not the four-legged kind, but in cane. By reaching the Chinese people to use condensed milk Northwest canners have conquered a new market of vast proportions. In China there is no dairy industry, and few cows. What milk is obtained comes from goats and buffalos and is usually made into cheese. The Chinese have not only adopted the condensed milk for their tea, but have developed a taste for canned milk ice cream, which is served by main restaurants, both in China and Japan. companies, some of which were too unreliable to be trustworthy, while others gave excellent service. Graham declared that the roads not only paid the taxes and helped to a large extent to build and maintain the highways, to say nothing of having purchased rights of way wherever they were located, but did more by far than the truck companies for the communities which they touched. It didn't seem square, said Graham, to desert the railroads after they had made heavy expenditures for the community. F. R. Garrison, who deals in plumbers' supplies, said that his class of business in Anaheim and Fullerton shipped almost entirely by truck, using the Merchants'. Garrison declared his willingness, however, to join in any movement which might be started to divide the freight business more equally between the railroads and truck concerns. Even classes of business which ship mainly by truck or only secondarily by rail were much in favor of so taxing the truck companies and restricting them that the damage which their heavy vehicles were causing to the highways would cease. Jacob Lakeman of Lakeman & Reiner Grocers, declared the truck companies ought to be taxed in proportion to the amount of gasoline used and this money turned over to the state for use on highway maintenance and improvement. George L. Jones, of Chaffee's, who ships from Los Angeles in his own trucks, said there was no doubt the truck companies were causing much of the damage to the highways and should be made to pay for it. Most or a large proportion of the goods of the haberdashers and dry goods dealers in shipped by express, and the former are able to get goods in five days even from New York City and Rochester N.Y. William Jackson could see no substitute for the American Railway Express, because of its dispatch and good service. Goods which can be shipped in advance of the season's demand, however, and in large quantities, necessarily are shipped by rail a representative of F. A. Yungbluth said. In respect to service, a wide difference was declared by many merchants to exist among the truck companies, some of which were too unreliable to be trustworthy, while others gave excellent service. STUDEBAKER DEALER Makes an Important Announcement Concerning the Used Car Values STUDEBAKER DEALER Makes an Important Announcement Concerning the Used Car Values Popularity of This Make Having an Unprecedented Effect on Used Car Market The fact that Studebaker cars are now generally recognized by discriminating buyers as the best new car values on the market, enables the Studebaker dealer to collect as "trade ins" on new Studebaker cars, an excellent assortment of high-grade used cars. On account of this unprecedented Studebaker popularity, these high-grade cars were taken in at fair market values. Studebaker dealers are in the new car business and make their profit selling new cars—not used cars; therefore, all used cars traded in on new Studebakers are sold at actual cost. If the used car buyer selects wisely and buys from a reliable dealer at a fair used car market price, he should be able to buy more real automobile value for a price from $500 to $200 than he could get in any new car at this low price. Here are a few of these choice bargains; come in and look them over—we have many more from which you can choose. 1920 Studebaker Light Six Coupe Hupmobile Touring, 1919 Franklin Touring, 1918 Buick Touring, 1918 Dodge Touring, 1919 Dodge Touring, 1918 Oakland Touring, 1919 Saxon Touring, 1918 Ford Roadster, 1920 Ford Touring, 1920 Willys-Knight Touring, 1918 Overland Touring, 1918 We allow you many months in which to pay.
