DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS Ah! tell me not that memory Sheds gladness o'er the past— What is recalled by failed flowers, Save that they did not last? Were it not better to forget, Than but remember and regret? —Miss M. E. Landon. Babe Ruth failed to score a home-run off Judge Landis' delivery. The person who is dishonest at heart will be dishonest in actions, sooner or later. Belittling the government and institutions of this country before foreigners is no way to Americanize them. Guns in the hands of grim marines as mail-train guards make a very effective breakwater for the crime waves. If members of Congress would just forget that 1922 is a Congressional election year, and would act accordingly! China is not content to accept rattles and playthings from the Arms Conference. She wants substantial relief. The United States may enter into friendly understandings or agreements with other nations, but not into political alliances. Preaching carefulness in traffic is all right. But it is practicing carefulness that really counts. One example of practical carefulness is worth a hundred preachments without the practice. General Wood, as governor-general, is pursuing a moderate course in "A sane and reasonable settlement, assuring the safety of Great Britain and Ireland," is the way Lord Birkenthead characterizes the historic agreement that has been reached between representatives of the British government and of the Sinn Féin forces. This agreement lacks only ratification by the British Parliament and by the Daily Eireann in Dublin, to become effective. An analysis of the provisos of the agreement reached indicates how deliberately balanced, by compromise, all the points are. Peaceful solution depended upon the exercise of a spirit of conciliation on both sides. The principle of give-and-take has been evoked in the weary weeks that the spirited negotiations have proceeded. The result is the largest measure of freedom for Ireland that is possible short of outright political independence. It is to be a "Free State," by these terms, in the broadest signification of the term "free." It is to be mistress of its own house, governmentally, just like the Dominion of anada and Australia are. But, as a free dominion, it stays in the British empire as an integral political part thereof. Ulster is given free choice as to its destiny. It can join the Irish Free State if it will, or it can retain its present status. Its decision will be awaited with keen interest on both sides of the Atlantic. Friends of Britain and of Ireland sincerely hope that this agreement will bring tranquility and better feeling. General Wood, as governor-general, is pursuing a moderate course in the Philippines and quite naturally is not pleasing the extremists. But no man could govern wisely in Manila and at the same time please those extremists who demand immediate independence for the islands and that other type of extremists—reactionaries who would stifle all hope of Filipino self-rule. Great Reception For New Maxwell A. E. Richmond, Pacific Coast representative of the Maxwell Chalmers Company of Detroit, has been a recent visitor here, arriving with the new Maxwell models which have been occasioning so much favorable comment in this part of the world. Richmond is a sales executive of many years experience and is one of the veterans with the Maxwell organization. He has been on the firing line for years but declares that the last few weeks have been the most delightful that it has been his experience to enjoy. The reason, of course, of the really big reception that has been recorded the new Maxwell, not only in Los Angeles but at other big distributing points on the coast that come under Richmond's supervision. In Southern California the new models arrived a few days earlier than in the northern territory and Richmond was on hand for the first formal showing at the Union Motors Company, Inc. The triumph there was a duplicate of in the north, according to Richmond, when the opening day for the new model display was held. Wires received from Detroit by Richmond indicate that in every part of the country the automobile trade and the motor car buying public alike have voiced their approval of the new cars in the same decided fashion that has marked their showing here. "The factory is in production, and models will be furnished for delivery here and in other parts of the country as rapidly as orders are filed," said Richmond. "These cars now on display are not specifically finished for show purposes but are a part of the regular production. All other models will be attractive, just as beautifully finished and will find just as much favor with the careful buyer." Mr. Richmond will in the near future make an extensive tour of the western territory in the interest of the Maxwell Chalmers Company. J. Devling, were motofing with friends on the state road and were bowling along at the pace so good a road invites, when a mule walked out of a barn directly in front of the car. There was no time to stop. It was impossible to go around, and Devling did the only thing remaining. He struck the mule amidship, as near as he could direct the prow of his boat and "evahbody" skidded down the pavement. The front of the car was smashed, the radiator crumpled, hood and fenders irretrievably bent, and it is estimated that $150 will be needed to repair the car. No one in the car was hurt. The mule arose, rolled a reproachful gate at the driver, as much as to say "How come?" and stalked back into the barn. Witman, Eyesight Specialist.
