Wednesday, December 7, 1921 SUPERVISORS BACK MEALY BUG BATTLE The board of supervisors yesterday lined up with the citrus interests of the county in their war upon the mealy bug, rapidly growing menace to the orchardist. Responding to the appeal of a committee of growers and packers, representing the citrus industry of the entire county, the board appropriated $1,200 to employ and equip a man to represent Orange-co at the state insectary, Whittier, where parasite enemies of the mealy bug are being producer. The arargement thus provided for will insure a supply of the parasites sufficient, it is believed, to eradicate the mealy bug fwrom citrus orchards of this county. The citrus committee headed by C. E. Utt of Tustin, appeared before the supervisors to explain the situation and urge the action that was felt necessary to cope with the problem before the industry. Several of the committee addressed the board. Representing that the mealy bug which once before threatened extermination of the state's citrus industry but was quelled by the parasite, is again invading So. Calif., and has already encroached on Orange-co, where it has spread from one to 20 orchards within a year, they pointed out the menace to an industry which has an assessed valuation of about $25,000,000 in the county. The mealy bug, they declared, was proof against fumigation, and the parasite is the sole instrument for its destruction. Since the particular parasite which feeds on the mealy bug always dies out after destroying its food supply, it is necessary to keep replenishing the parasite supply. This work is being done at the state insectary, at Whittier, but the demand has grown beyond expectations. The extra man, supplied by Orange-co, would, it was stated, enable the insectary to double its production and guarantee this county a sufficient number of parasites to meet the needs. Among those who addressed the board were C. E. Utt, Roy Crummline, of the La Habra Citrus Ass'n, Dr. I. G.
