Who is it that does not agree that today Charles Chaplin occupies a pedestal in the American public's mind as the premier of fun makers. So whenever any theatre announces that Chaplin is to be on the program in one of his great comedies, the patrons gain to get ready to turn out. Such was the announcement made today by the management of the California theatre. This splendid theatre is to show Chaplin in his latest comedy smash, "The Idle Class," starting tomorrow, and this means that packed houses will greet the mustached comedian. This latest comedy production of Chaplin's is without a doubt something entirely new in mirth The noted star takes a dual part, and both as the tramp in his old familiar garb, and also as the society lounge lizard, he is ridiculously funny. The audience is kept in a continual uproar of mirth from the time the curtain opens on the picture until the final fade-out New and novel comedy stunts are "pulled" by the big-footed comedian, and they are so unusual that the spectators are held in a suspense of laughter and tears while the hilarity is on. In keeping with such a strong feature, the management has prepared an added program fully up to the standard demanded by such an attraction Popular Eugene O'Brien will be seen in that powerful play "Clay Dollar," and Mack vaudeville headliners will dispense good music and other splendid entertainment for this program. Charles Hawley, the organist has prepared a dandy musical offering which should go over like the veritable "house afire," and all in all the whole bill is a hummer. INTENSE INTEREST IN CHRISTMAS SALE The largest showing of toys ever exhibited in No.Orange-co is now on display at Weber's Book & Music Store, where Santa Claus has arrived in all his glory Besides a large section of the main floor being given over to holiday goods, the entire second floor is packed with Christmas goods. The annual Christmas sale opened Saturday with the greatest display of interest on the part of the public that this popular store has ever witnessed so early in the season Two thousand souvenirs were given away Saturday and today. The line of dolls and doll carriages and of electrical and mechanical toys is particularly complete. GOOD ROADS VS. BATTLESHIPS A battleship lasts but a few years before it is junk, even in times of peace. But a good road runs straight to the sunrise, endures for a lifetime and brings happiness and convenience to millions. MEN'S SOULS BIGGER Men's souls, says Marshal Foch, are bigger since the war. The great French soldier, with characteristic directness, has hit upon an essential truth. Men's souls are bigger, men's understanding is broader and men's sympathies are deeper than ever before in the history of the world. It is largely because of Foch's own dignity and strength of soul that the American people love him. There is in the man's makeup nothing of the provincial. Acclaimed the world's greatest soldier, his modesty is in keeping with his strength of character. "Coming to America" he said, "has enlarged my vision."—San Francisco Chronicle. Search has been instituted by Jernigan for a red headed man and a man who limped. At the same time he sought the last numeral on the license plate of a Ford car, which the men are believed to have rented in Los Angeles Wednesday night, and to have used while robbing the W. E. Lanyon home at 801 South Izona-st, in Santa Ana. A neighbor of Lanyon, on the night of the robbery, saw the red headed man and the man who limped leave the Lanyon house. He also saw the Ford and got the car's license number—all but the last figure. He gave the police the number 219,264. It was up to Jernigan to supply the missing numeral. He found that the numbers from 219,260 to 219,267 are all registered to the same owner, the Ford Rental company, 810 Marsh Strong building, Los Angeles. This seemed to simplify the situation materially. Of course the number sought might be 219,268 or 219,269, but the chances were 8 to 2 against that possibility especially since neither of those two numbers was registered to a Ford car. Accordingly, Jernigan is investigating the rental company, to ascertain whether a man who limped and a red headed man rented one of its cars Wednesday night. If they did, the next step will be to locate the men and prosecute them for the crime. The burglars who visited the Lanyon residence thoroughly ransacked it after gaining entrance by slashing a rear screen, then using a pass key to open the door. Lanyon found that only a child's savings bank, containing about 25 in silver had been stolen. MEASUROGRAPHS INSTALLED Sebastian Bros. have installed a measurograph at each of their wrapping counters, which will greatly facilitate the work of the sales people and save much time to the customer. The machine accurately measures and computes the cost of the smallest portion of yardage goods, and should the material be reversed in feeding, the amount and cost are thus deducted, making it impossible for the customer to pay for more than he has received. As a time saver and a benefit to the salespeople, as well as to the customer, the measuregraph is a great addition to the equipment of this wide awake firm. BOWLING THIS WEEK Five Points Service Station and Sanitary Dye Works will meet tonight in the City Bowling league and tomorrow night the Dew Drop Inn will meet Tridle & Tridle while James Vulcanizers clash with the Studebakers. Thursday evening there will be a special game between City League All-Stars composed of Wulf, Hedder, Martin, Yoorn and Dugas, and a picked team composed of P. Varner, James Boyd, Fox and Efker. Attorneys for the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads and the Pacific Electric company, of Los Angeles, are scheduled to attend. The state railroad commission will act in the capacity of the interstate commerce commission, it was announced today. W. N. Cummings, chairman of the Growers' committee, said today: "We are objecting only to the proposed spur thru Orange and Villain to Tustin. We do not believe spur is a necessity as we think this part of the country developed and has more cities than it needs. Lieve that the railroads be denied."
