"CHRIST AND WILL OF MAN" IS TOPIC Dr. J. A. Geissinger spoke yesterday morning at the White Temple upon "Christ and the Will of Man." Luke 18:41. He said in part: "We have here Christ alongside of the will of man. We have had much confusing talk about man in these latter days. On the one hand it is said that there isn't anything the matter with man. Let him alone. See how far he has come. He will arrive. Give him room and time. On the other we are assured from the same sources that not much may be expected of man as he is a creature of heredity and circumstances. Here in this Scripture we have an honest word about man, a true picture of man; Man is a free, imperial will in need of help. The law holds that man is responsible for his needs, that is free, practically. A pistol if it could talk, might urge that some one pulled its trigger. We never try the pistol. Man pulls own trigger. Common sense takes the same standard man himself knows that he is free. Every man who has gone wrong knows that he had a moment, if only a moment that was his and that he made the decision that settled matters for him thus far. In like fashion philosophy and science are coming round to this position again. The latest word from the biologist is that heredity has the least to do with man of all animals. It is scientifically true that while we may not be responsible for the disposition we are born with we are yet responsible for the disposition we die with.' All life is a making over of man's life. Similarly we know that empires sleep in man's brain. The Roman Empire was not a drift nor was Alexander's conquest. Bismarck was man of iron and blood and the mightiest kind of dynamite known in the world is that done up in human packages. Given a man with an idea beneath which beats a conviction and you have an irresistible force. Yet also this man with empires in his brain is much of the time mired in mud. He does not seem to be able to get free. Now if man is in need of help, what kind of help is it that he needs? I name five things that man needs. He needs to be aroused. The average man and woman never gets fully awake. Now and then some man like Booker Washington buys a hen coop and starts a college and lifts a race but multitudes of men and women Ireland Grateful for America’s A This wall, once a portion of a chemists' shop, is the only wall standing in Patrick Street, Cork, Ireland, following the conflagration which left the city a mass of ruins. (Insert) James Douglas, treasurer of has been given to non-combined Irish White Cross, is to this women and children on both sides country with a message from his Irish struggle. Now and then some man like Booker Washington buys a hen coop and starts a college and lifts a race but multitudes of men and women black and white lie around all day. The blackest fact in the world this morning is spiritual inertia. Man striking eight when he should be striking twelve. What God can do by mountains and seas and sunsets and dawns and poets and music and art he has done to arouse man, but in Christ as in mother, the soul of man leaps to greatness. He makes the lame to leap up and carry the bed upon which he has been lying. "Man needs light. He must be able to see where he is going once he is aroused. The great questions man asks perforce are three: What can I know? What may I hope? What shall I do? As in no other we find answers to these questions in Christ." But man needs to have his life reconciled to the nature of thing—to itself and to God and to have it centered. It is not enough that man shall have light. Man has a strange way of preferring the darkness to the light. The fact is human perversity is to be reckoned with. You may not recognize this fact of sin. It is possible not to. You may prefer to run your head into the sand ostrich-like. Possibly you can do as much good with your head there as anywhere. But your refusal to recognize the fact of sin does not blot out sin. It simply advertises the fact that you might know more than you do. Man needs to have this bias taken out of him. This is his deepest trouble, self-will—that is one thing but it is very lovely thing. To identify will with the will of God, to be to say "I am come to do thy will good," that is a higher type of life man. We have seen the ruthless Irish will riding over human rights and carrying out its policy of blood and iron but how much better that man's will should be set to see that the humble child has the fullest opportunity for self-realization? That cooperation for rich shall be realized on the earth? That goodness and goodwill shall prevail? Yet again, this will of man recently and re-motivated, needs an adequate task. It is interesting to note the reflex action of man's work on himself. Booker Washington while lifting his race lightward, is lifted himself. As you study Abraham Lincoln at his bloody but beneficent task you can see CHICHESTER S PILLS THE DELAMOND BRAND CHICHESTER S PILLS IN DELAMOND AND GOLD METALS TAKE ON OTHER HISTORICAL METALS TAKE ON OTHER HISTORICAL METALS ANAHEIM FEED & FUEL COMPANY This wall, once a portion of a chemists' shop, is the only wall standing in Patrick Street, Cork, Ireland following the conflagration which left the city a mass of ruins. (Insert James Douglas, treasurer of the Irish White Cross, is in this country with his message from his Irish struggle: Protestant Catholics, Jews and Gentiles worked side by side in a national country with Ireland, made to the American Committee for Relief in Ireland of which Justice Morgan J. Orbison is chairman, and Thomas F. Ryzmil R. A. Dobey, John D. Ryan, Nicholas F. Brady, and other prominent Americans have taken an active role in the White Cross has charge of the distribution of the American Committee's funds. According to a statement made by Mr. Douglas immediately upon his arrival, relief from this country arrived at a time when the Irish people were in most desperate straits. Without funds from the American Committee, the relief work could not have continued; he said, and widespread desolation of whole sections of Ireland would undoubtedly have followed. Mr. Douglas is a Quaker and has taken no part in partly politics. The work of his organization, burying a year ago at a time of the most bitter warfare, has been conducted on a non-partisan, non-political basis. Relief him changed and greatened. So Paul hurryly forward with his good news to the world is changed from character to character until when you see him as Paul the aged you can scarcely believe that this is Paul the youth who came up to Jerusalem from Tarsus. So Jesus sets us to building his Kingdom. That is the task of the redeemed that they may be redeemed. Finally man must be nourished as he goes forward with his task. And this is the meaning of fellowship with Christ. "These are the needs of man's will and these are the ways in which Christ relates himself to us. How is it with you this morning? Do you feel like saying: 'Lord let me alone. I have no desire for help. Spend your time and grace on someone else?' Are you going to say that, if not in words at least in indifference? Or are you going to pray for forgiveness, for release from the burden of guilt, for a new life for a new power of love?charger outlook and for a will?" G. & L. Lease G. & L. LEASE, Nov. 28—(Spl.) Ventura-co was the scene of the first search for and production of oil in California. Mexicans are reported to have developed petroleum in Ventura-co as early as 1854, although at that time and for a number of years thereafter, the crude oil was taken principally from seepages or tunnels driven into oil sands near the outcrop. Standard Oil Co. was operating in Ventura-co in 1877 and the Hardison and Stewart Oil Co., forerunner of Union Oil Co. of California, started operating in Rancho Ex-Mission and Sespe Creek in 1883. None of the present major producing fields of California had been discovered at that time. Oil fields of Ventura-co represent a great variety of surface and subsurface conditions. The South Mountain field, for example, covers the almost inaccessible slopes of South Mountain, near Santa Paula. The construction of a well site and grading of roads along the steep mountainside represents expenditures which almost equal drilling costs. During the first six months of 1921 the wells in South Mountain field produced 547,874 bbls. of oil. The Ventura field, near the City of Ventura, has continuously lured some of the larger oil companies to large expenditures for development, where danger of losing wells from gas blowouts and difficulties of shutting off water cause the most difficult drilling conditions existing anywhere in the state. The Ventura field produces some of the highest grade oil of the state. During the first six months of 1921 wells in the Ventura field produced $2,240 bbls. o oil. Another recent development in Ventura-co is the so-called "post-hole paradise" near Conejo. Here, during the early part of 1921 a number of companies were organized to drill shallow wells in the old Camarillo field. One hundred twenty-four wells have been reported ready to drill in this field since the first of the year. The wells are finished at depths less than 200 feet. Some were drilled to oil in less than 24 hours and started producing anywhere from 10 to 120 barrels of oil per day. The wells are reported to be short-lived. The interest shown in the development and recovery of oil from theAllege Realty Firm Charged Too Much Alliesing real estate agents, thrush whom they purchased a walnut grove, misrepresented the purchase price to the extent of $2,000 and collected that amount from them above the actual price. Elmer and Laura Gedney appeared today in the superior court in a $2,000 damage suit against Hoffman, Smith and Holcombe, Santa Ana real estate agents. The Gedneys saw an advertisement they claim, in which the agents advertised for sale a ten-acre walnut orchard in Los Angeles county, belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mossinger. They answered the advertisement and opened negotiations with the really firm for the purchase of the orchard. The agents told them, according to the Geineys, that the grove was priced at $20,000. The Gedneys authorized the agents to offer $19,000. Next, they claim, the agents told them that the $19,000 offer was accepted on the following terms: $7,000 to be paid down, $5,000 to be paid a year later, and a $7,000 mortgage to be assumed. This proposition was accepted and the transaction was concluded, the plaintiffs allege, the agents having represented that they had paid the initial payment for the buyers. Later, they assert, they learned that the owners of the grove had only asked $17,000 for the orchard, and required only $5,000 down. The reality agents are charged with having misrepresented the price and the sum that they claimed to have paid down on the property, and to have collected from the plaintiffs $2,000 more than they paid. MILK. THE GREATEST FOOD In the preservation of foods, an art which has reached considerable perfection in these days, it is interesting to note how important a part is played by opposite forces of nature. For instance, after milk is obtained from the cow, it is a greater stride toward keeping it pure, to use "cold" (in the form of natural ice generally) to bring the temperature promptly down until near the freezing point. Later, however, an opposite plea ECHO OF OLD WORLD IN HACIENDA CLUB An echo of the Old World, a breath from the warm fires of a younger Spain, will be brot to So. Calif with the completion of the new clubhouse which is planned for the Hacienda Country club, near Whittier according to the announcement today of Alphonso Bell, of Santa Fe Springs, president of the club. With architects plans completed and in the hands of club officials work on the construction of the new clubhouse is expected to begin before Jan. 1. The building of the clubhouse will be followed by the extension of the golf course, according to Bell. The golf course at present consists of nine holes and to these will be added the fairways and putting greens of another nine holes, making a regulation 18-hole course, which, when completed Bell declared today, will be one of the finest links in California. The new clubhouse was designed by Carlton Monroe Winslow, a well known California architect, who has won prominence through his work at the San Diego exposition and at Santa Barbara. The clubhouse will be built by units, the first unit to be erected between the present time and the first of next year, and others to be added later. The design of the clubhouse is typically Spanish. It will be of either tile or concrete construction. The first unit will consist of a veranda 50 feet in length and 18 feet wide, providing sufficient spaces for tables and lounge chairs; a dining room 59 feet long and 50 feet wide! a Spanish court or patio in the center and on the east end of the building a locker room and showers for men club members. The entrance to the clubhouse will be an arcade of Spanish design. The second unit which will be added in the near future will be the lounge room on the west end of the clubhouse. Until that is completed the dining room will be used as a lounge. The work of laying out the second nine holes of the golf course will begin next spring, according to the club president. No pairs have been spared to make the links one of the finest in this section of the state and the results have fully met expectations, according to Bell. The course is entirely of grass, both fairway and grassy. MILK. THE GREATEST FOOD In the preservation of foods, an art which has reached considerable perfection in these days, it is interesting to note how important a part is played by opposite forces of nature. For instance, after milk is obtained from cow, it is a greater stride toward keeping it pure, to use "cold" (in the form of natural ice generally) to bring the temperature promptly down until near the freezing point. Later, however, an opposite plan is essential. By prolonged heating of the milk to a moderately high temperature the bacteria or germs which are unhealthful are killed and the milk, unchanged in its digestibility, is rendered safe for use by the infant or invalid. Both of these methods are used in their amplest form in the preparation of Horlick's Malted Milk, so as to obtain the highest purity of the food. The absence of moisture is an efficient safeguard against the growth of bacteria and it also makes the producer capable of being taken easily to all parts of the world. It was no little achievement of Horlick's (who originated malted milk) to make a product which retains all the nutritive value of malted grain and rich milk and which produces at a moment's notice a food-drink that is sustaining, invigorating and also delicious to the taste.
