EFFICIENCY
It ain't senseless hoardin'
Nor stinting of our need,
But efficiency in spendin'
That should become our creed.
It ain't some money set aside
On impulse once awhile,
But steady anyin' day by day
That builds the steady pile.
S. V. PERIMAN.
Thrift is shorthand for "Waste not, want not."
Roy Gardner has not killed anybody. But he has killed his own chance to be an honest, useful man. What is more worth while than being honest and useful?
Of the few billions of currency in circulation in this country, who gets the little residue that is left after the baseball players and moving picture stars are paid off?
Scientists say there are 25,000,000-000bacilli in one teaspoonful of ice cream. But there is a girl in this block who is remarkably courageous along this line.
Love in the royal palace is essentially the same as love in the peasant's cottage. Love is the great level—the universal democratizing, equalizing influence.
There is no virtue more splendid than loyalty. Loyalty to country; loyalty to family; loyalty to friends; loyalty to good principles—these loyalties are the noblest adornments of human character.
As the smoke lifts, along the Mexican border, the lid is discovered, tightly closed.
HIGH SURTAX RETAINED BY CONGRESS
The person with an income of $200,000 a year or more, must pay one-half of income into the United States Treasury. This is the decision of Congress, although President Harding has urged a minimum rate of not more than 40 per cent surtax. The House voted to accept the Senate rate of 50 per cent.
The division on this proviso of the tax-revision bill was not rigidly partisan. It was more sectional and class than partisan. The agricultural bloc of the Middle West and the Far East voted almost solidly for the 50 per cent rate. Republicans joined with Democrats in this. Representatives of the granger states arrayed themselves on the side of high taxes for those of swollen incomes.
President Harding's argument was, in effect, that a very high surtax would yield less than a moderate rate, and also that a heavy surtax would tend to discourage business investments and industrial activities. The House, however, went counter to the President in this and agreed to the high rate already voted by the Senate.
The effect of this rigorous surtax will be watched with interest. Even though it may have dampening effect on business and industry, it will be beneficial, on the whole, for the country to know what revised tax rates are to be, though they may not be altogether satisfactory. Uncertainty about rates plays more havoc with economic activities than would the rates themselves, be they ever so high.
EXILE FOR HAPSBURGS: DYNASTY BROKEN
Love in the royal palace is essentially the same as love in the peasant's cottage. Love is the great level—the universal democratizing, equalizing influence.
There is no virtue more splendid than loyalty. Loyalty to country; loyalty to family; loyalty to friends; loyalty to good principles—these loyalties are the noblest adornments of human character.
As the smoke lifts, along the Mexican border, the lid is discovered, tightly down, and President Obregon sitting on it. That latest "revolution" seems to have stopped before it got started.
There are a few public men who, deluding themselves into thinking that the Presidential bee was buzzing in their direction, have been rudely awakened by a stinging rebuke from the people.
Among other things, be thankful, on Thanksgiving, that you do not have an income of $200,000, for not having it, you owe having to pay $100,000 in income tax. What a luxury it is to be poor!
Roy Gardner lost all claim to public sympathy when he showed that he was insincere in his promise to reform. The only place for Gardner is prison. He would be a public manace at large. To turn him loose would be to put a premium upon crime.
If the powers collaborating with the United States in the Arms Conference do not hew to the line of canard and good faith, as to the great issues before the conference, the United States will not hesitate about letting the world know the unpleasant truth.
EXILE FOR HAPSBURGS: DYNAS-TY BROKEN
Former Emperor Charles, of Austria-Hunary, and former Empress Zita, are being conveyed to the island of Madera, where they are to be held in exile by the Allied powers. This course comes as a sequal to two abortive attempts of Charles to regain the throne from which he was deposed after the close of the World War.
Thus ends, apparently for all time, the proud royal house of Hapsburg—a house which brought immeasurable misery and ruin upon Europe and the World. It was this autocratic dynasty which provoked the World War. No democrat and no lover of freedom will shed a tear that the royal seions of this bloody dynasty are put away effectually where they must needs cease their troubling.
Absolute monarchs fast are passing from world's stage of action. Absolutism in government and militarism are being banished. In truth, it would be hard for one to put one's finger on the map of the world and denote a country, large or small, ruled today by an absolute monarch, with no semblance of democratic government. The monarchs that remain are constitutional or limited.

Coroner Urges Careful Driving
ACCIDENTS from automobiles resulting in death, are often very dim and vague to the majority of people. But to the coroner of a county they represent vivid and unforgettable tragedies. Next to those left by the victims of the accidents, he is closest to the grim realities of these catastrophes.
Interviewed by an official of the Auto Club of So. Calif., Coroner Charles H. Brown spoke strongly and feelingly of the importance of the No Accident Week campaign now being conducted in Orange-co.
"The people outside of the immediate family and friends of a person killed," he said, "have no idea of the sorrow and of the financial loss occasioned by the death of the father or the mother of a family thru these accidents, nor of the grief and irreparable loss caused by the death of a child. I wish that some of the reckless or careless drivers could have been thru half of the scenes I have witnessed because of these calamities. It would, I believe, make them realize the terrible results of speeding, or carelessness."
"I am glad that the campaign for safety has been begun. I hope it will bear fruit in the way of more care, more consideration for public safety, and a resolve on the part of every motor driver to do everything in his or her power to help preserve human life and limb."
SENSATIONAL NEW MAXWELL IS HERE
It's here. The new Maxwell that has caused such a furore in the motor world, and it certainly is one of the most agreeable surprises that the season has had to offer. The car is now on display at the salesrooms of Turton and Lumsdon, local dealers.
"Perhaps, the outstanding feature of the Maxwell is the unstinted praise that has been accorded the car by various distributors, dealers and salesmen of other automobile companies," states Messrs. Turton and Lumsdon.
"All who have witnessed the Maxwells have remarked that they are 'knockouts' not only due to the beautiful lines of the car, but more so because of the remarkably low price." The new Maxwell's popularity has spread like wild-fire. It apparently is exactly the type of car and with the price in accordance, that motoring public has been waiting for. Scores of the new cars have been sold.
ORGANIZATION BACK OF CAR BIG THING
"One of the greatest features that goes with the purchase of a Chevrolet is the wonderful organization that stands in readiness to make good the investment," states Frank P. Taggart, local dealer. "Selections of representatives are made from the most reliable individuals in a city, they must be financially able to maintain thoroughly equipped service stations with a complete stock of parts, so that owners will be placed at the least inconvenience when repairs are necessary."
Now the latest protection which is offered by this company is a uniform scale of charges for the repairing and installing each unit in the Chevrolet. These cost sheets have been compiled after extensive checking and research work on each operation necessary to replace each unit and the results have been made public to the community."
