WALKER PREACHES ON NATURE'S SCHEME At the Presbyterian church Sunday, the pastor, Rev. Thomas H. Walker, took Gen. 1:31 as his text: "And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good;" also Gen. 3-1: "Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made." He said in part: "Nature laughs at the orderly array of par gardens. The trees of the forest fire not in rows nor do the grasses and bushes come in squares and circles geometrically laid out. Nature is extravagant, lavish. Generous breezes blow the seeds of forest and garden, of thorn and thistle and dandelion, everywhere across the countryside. Man can never reproduce nature's unrestrained artistic production. Just like nature, we say, in highest compliment of some man's work of imitation. "Richard Jeffries, the English naturalist, in writing of snakes says: 'viper have their favorite localities. So soon as the violets push up and open their sweet-scented flowers, under the first warm gleams of the spring sunshine, the snake ventures forth from his hole to bask on the south side of the bank. In looking for violets it is not unusual to hear a rustling of the dead leaves that still strew the ground, and to see the pointed tail of a snake being dragged after him under cover." Now if we had the ordering of snakes would have their place and be compelled to keep it. We would choose the site for our home; wave a magic wand; and lo! the desired flowers and fruits would spring up in prim rows and all snakes, bugs and other creeping things, with thorns and thistles would have no place there. Someway or other, I like nature better, for I know there is a reason for these annoying things and it is for me to deal with them and gain the ascendency over them. The careful student of history has to account for the devil. The thoughtful DEMAND GROWS FOR BETTER GRADE OILS Local dealers report a steadily increasing demand for the better grade lubricants despite the fact that many lower grade oils sell for considerably less and, in many cases, yield more profit. They are of the opinion that this very marked tendency is an indication of the effectiveness of truthful advertising as well as the better results that motorists invariably get when they use high grade lubrication. Take for instance, the Panama Lubricants Company of Los Angeles. This concern has gone to no small amount of trouble to see that their products are distributed through only the most reputable dealers. Subsequently they have widely advertised the fact that the Pennzoil sign, wherever displayed, is nothing short of a guarantee of the dealer’s responsibility. Local dealers who have been fortunate enough to secure the Pennzoil oil line have found that the Panama Co.’s policy is both appreciated and valued by the thousands of So. Calif. motorists. This widely known lubricant has won its popularity solely on merit. It is pure Pennsylvania product, manufactured in Oil City and shipped to this coast in sealed tank cars. It is then barreled and delivered to customers throughout the southwest. Pennzoil Motor and Tractor Oils are but one item in the extensive line of lubricants put out by the Panama Company. Steam cylinder oils, tractor, gas engine and dynamo oils, greases of all kinds, automobile soaps and lubricants for every imaginable type of machinery constitute the array of products which this company supplies to its patrons. Sonjeway or other, I like nature better, for I know there is a reason for these annoying things and it is for me to deal with them and gain the ascendency over them. The careful student of history has to account for the devil. The thoughtful student of God's word finds the answer there. Ian MacLaren's friend said to him: 'I get more good out of one glorious sunset than out of all the sermons I ever hear.' But nature is not all sunsets. Storms and clouds are there, too. Do you find God in fragrant flowers, singing birds and twinkling stars and the rainbow after the storm? You are sorting nature over—you worship the God of Nature and yet ignore the storm and the serpent. You admire the sweep of the eagle's flight, but she has dripping talons; the gentle grace of the gambolling lambs provokes our interest, but what of the gory fangs of the wolf? "The occurrences of the past few years have raised many questions, destroyed many of our assumptions and shattered many of our easy-going, amiable beliefs. Human nature is not the naturally good thing we thought it to be. Every battle field has driven us black on the tragic but true Bible view of human nature, that essential good is not there and from every quarter the world wettering in misery and blood has shouted: 'Except a man be born from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.' Pelagins, a British monk of long ago, preached this rosy doctrine of the inherent good of human nature and that man was slowly but surely by his own energy, evolving from the primeval slime. The millenium was thus to be established through man's own unaided efforts. This was to be done by creating a favorable environment. Man, he contended, is the result of his surroundings, education and scientific culture was also to assist in this evolution. Science ordering life would speedily banish all the liis of life and consequently its evils too. Scientific culture was to get rid of the beast in man. William James called this 'sentimental optimism.' No need of the second birth so long as a man was well-born the first time. No room in all this for Jesus and his heaven-sent salvation. The present condition of the world scornfully repudiates such superficial views. Human nature under 'scientific culture' did not look good in France. It made a mock of national good faith.committed. EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS ARE BETTER THOUGHOUT COUNTRY WASHINGTON, Nov. 28—According to the United States employment service, industrial conditions throughout the country showed decided improvement during the fourth of October. There were marked increases in employment in the basic industries of iron, steel, metal products and the railroads which more than offset the decrease in the employment in seasonal industries. The report is based on data received from 231 principal industrial centers. Public improvements are absorbing a very large quantity of common labor that has been out of work throughout the summer or that has been released from agricultural, canning and other seasonal activities. speakable at Louvain and murdered Edith Cavell. "So long as such parties like the San Francisco affair are held, we know but little progress has been made by science to tame the beast in man. Culture has left a ghastly catalogue of drame. Browning gave as one reason why he believed in Christianity, that 'it launched its dart point blank at the head of a lie, taught original sin, the corruption of man's heart." "The natural goodness of man is a popular lie, at which even the pulpit has smiled indulgently at times. Redemption of man according to Jesus is by a Divine miracle from without." Except a man be born from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. "You cannot explain Jesus Christ by the theory of evolution. He came down, not up, to save the lost; from God the Father to prove His willingness to save though it cost the awful death of the cross. Is there any hope for the man in sin?" And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me." Is there any hope for the world, for the abolishment of righteousness and peace and love? Yes, for though civilization has failed, Jesus Christ has not failed. He can re-create. He rakes the gutters of humanity, and lifts out of them the jewels for his crown. The poison will yet be extracted from the fangs of the snake, the thirst of blood from the tiger's nature, and Isaiah's picture of Christ's perfect day will come true, when 'a little child shall lead them,' unafraid and unharmed. "It was one such reclaimed bit of humanity, in whom the beast had been in the ascendant, who sang of his redemption experience. Somebody came and lifted me out of my sin and misery; somebody came, oh, who could it be, who could it be but Jesus?" "Because of increased production and lessons learned during the war the Philadelphia Storage Battery Co. is now able to offer the famous Philadelphia Diamond Grid Battery with a two-year service guarantee at prices that mean a worthwhile saving. COMPLETE SHOW OF STUDEBAKER CARS The more comprehensive the line of models produced by a motor car manufacturer the more difficult it becomes for a dealer to show the complete line but Harry D. Riley, after weeks of endeavor, has finally succeeded in getting together, at one time, the complete line of Studebaker enclosed cars. He intends to take advantage of it and stage an automobile show of his own in his Anaheim salesroom and has issued a general invitation to the public to come in during show week and make a thorough inspection of the fine examples of coach work that Studebaker is producing. There are six different models of the coupes and sedans, two one of the three each chassis. Starting with the light six coupe roadster the body types range up to the big rooomy, luxurious seven passenger sedan. According to Riley each one of the models covers a particular field of passenger transportation without leaving any gaps. The design and finish of the bodies shows that experience has gone into their construction and Studebaker is rather long on experience in fine carriage building for the founding of the house dates back seventy years. The wonderful attention to detail is ascribed to the fact that hundreds of the skilled craftsmen who work for Studebaker have been with the house for years. Riley is, of course, enthusiastic over the chance to show the complete line of enclosed cars but while he was glowingly describing the beauties of line and finish and trim and appointment he said that one fundamental thing might be overlooked when the cars were judged solely by appearance and that was the chassis. Riley claims that every man who purchases a fine enclosed car has a right to have it mounted on a chassis that is free from noise and vibrations and so extends his invitation to make an Placentia News PLACENTIA, Nov. 28.(SpL) Mr. and Mrs. H. POSTMASTER GENERAL HAS CUT FIFTEEN MILLION WASHINGTON, Nov. 28—Approximately $500,000 saving has been effected in the railway mail service through careful inspection and reorganization of the Sunday service. This has been accomplish by having the clerical force and the space used in transporting the mail conform to the needs of the service on that day. It is the first time that a systematic survey of the Sunday service as a whole has ever been made. This is a part of Postmaster General Hay's program of effecting economies in the postal service by checking up on service that was expanded during the war period. A similar check up has been effected in all other branches of the service which has resulted in a total saving of $15,000,000 in the running expense of the postal service for the present fiscal year. inspection to include a real demonstration of Studebaker performance as well.
