Saturday, November 26, 1911 SPORTING EVENTS TOUGH BATTLES ON ATHLETIC PROGRAM Some tough, rough and rare old-fashioned battles featured the re-opening of the weekly Friday nite boxing shows at the Anaheim Athletic club's new arena. Referee Billy Darnley had a busy night of it and had his hands full in each one of the contests so intent and anxious were the boys to win. In one of the bouts, it took the combined efforts of a dozen men to separate the contestants after the bell in the final round. In another go, after a draw had been declared. It did not satisfy one of the principals and he proceeded to clean up the referee. Peace soon reigned, however, and every one left for home well satisfied they had witnessed a rattling good show. The bouts were alive with action from start to finish and kept the crowd on edge all the time. A few more cards like the one given last night and the S. R. O. sign will be hung out. In the main event, Jack Iman caught a tartar in Dan Mackey of Los Angeles. This boy Mackey reminds one of a real grizzly bear for the amount of hair that covers his whole body. Jack had a hard time trying to find a vulnerable spot to land on the grizzly boy for he was very elusive and shifty when our Jack did land, oh bay but it appeared that surplus amount of hair he was carrying acted as a protection. However, Mackey showed that he is a good, game boy and a clever performer with his mitts. He carries a wicked wallop as well in both hands. In the first round, he shot a straight left to Jack's head that made the local busky sick and dizzy for a few seconds and dropto meet with favor with a few of Jack's admirers who thot their man should have been given the medal. But the local club is not playing any favorites. The outside boy is going to be given just as square a deal as the home boy every time. This last minute flash stuff does not catch the eye of the local referee. He judges the fights round for round. In the semiwindup, Willie Hunt of Los Angeles and Young Dudley fought a wicked fight. So intent were the two on licking one another that they kept the good work up after the bell rang ending the round. Bennie Heller and Ernie Farren, a Seattle youth, gave the crowd a real thrill. Both leds put up a whale of a battle that kept the fans on their toes throut, looked curtains for the Seattle boy in the first round when Bennie slowed him up with a couple of those left hooks of his but he soon recovered and throut every round thereafter carried the fight to his man. Young Burton, the local colored flash, gave away several pounds in weight and almost a beating to Geo. Sherman of Los Angeles. Burton started to clean up on Georgia in short order but the pace was too telling and along about the middle of the third round he weakened enough so that Sherman, coming back strong, fought himself into a draw. Kid Louie stopped the Zulu Kid in the fourth after the little darky had put up a whirlwind battle for the distance. In the curtain raiser, Tommy Reyes of Fullerton and Young Roach of Anaheim comedied their way to a draw. In the first round, he shot a straight left to Jack's head that made the local busy sick and dizzy for a few seconds and dropped him to his knees, but Iman is a game lad himself and he was up and doing in a few seconds none the worse for the punch. From then on until the end of the fourth round it was hammer and tongs with the possible exception of the fourth round when the local boy shaded the stranger. The bout was "even steven."
