MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1921 SPORTING EVENTS DEMONS READY FOR THANKSGIVING RACE Tugging at the leash, champing at the bit, trembling at the throttle or what ever it is that race drivers do just before racing, something like a dozen of the greatest pilots that ever twirled a wheel are awaiting the starting flag that on Thanksgiving Day will send them on their 250 mile dash at the Los Angeles Speedway. After wearing out half a dozen high speed stop watches clocking the burning speed of the drivers in practice, Secretary A. M. Young of the Speedway Assn has ordered the big bowl bathed in Pyrex and has taken out a lump of extra fire insurance on the track. It certainly looks like a rapid event. Two deadly rivals of the racing game are prepared to put up a final struggle for the Speedway Crown of 1921. Tommy Milton, veteran of many a season, led in the A., A., A. point score for three quarters of the year only to have that persistent young person, Mr. Roscoe Sarles, ease past him on the home stretch. Just now Sarles is a few points to the good so far ahead of Milton in fact that it will be necessary for Thomas to get the checkered flag ahead of all the rest in order to win the laurels that last year were worn by Gaston Chevrolet. Anybody who thinks Milton and Sarles won't put up a struggle has never seen these two wounding men in action. Ralph Del Palma, who has been turning miles per hour into money in the bank for so long that most folks think he must be a hundred years or so old, has been working hard to get his new French Ballot racer into the very best of condition and reports that for the first time since he installed the new motor, his little car is on a par with the famous Ballot of last ear, which everyone knows was the fastest thing that ever turned the Los Angeles basin. Jimmy Murphy, winner of the French Sporting Events Big Improvements To Legion Arena "A Hot Time in the Old Town" is promised the sport loving public of Anaheim and vicinity tomorrow evening when the Anaheim Athletic club throws open the doors of its new arena on the corner of N. Los Angeles-st and the state highway. Several additions have been installed in the place that should make a decided improvement. A roof has been put over the place which alone should make it a popular rendezvous for sport fans in particular this time of the year. New ring lights have also been placed overhead and the contestants and spectators alike, no doubt, should be well pleased on this account. One feature of the arena that will more than meet with the approval of all is the fact that from every seat in the house a splendid view can be obtained of the ring. There is not a post or obstruction, of any kind that mars the view of the ring and that is something that few arenas nowadays can boost of. The seating arrangements are as near perfection as any one could wish them to be. They will be classified into three different sections—ringside, reserved and general admission. The first two rows from the ring will sell as ringside at $2. The next three as reserved at $1.50 while the general admission will sell at $1. The tag is added. This scale is only intended for tomorrow evening's show. When the boxing shows will be resumed next Friday a new scale of price will go into effect that it is hoped will meet with the general approval of all. For tomorrow evening's opening show, Athletic Manager Billy Darnley is going to present the long promised and long looked for wrestling match between Bull Montana and Al Sparks. Everybody knows the "Boot." He has a reputation that is famed from one end of the hemisphere to the other, both for his sterling qualities as a movie star and his wonderful wrestling skills. last year were worn by Gaston Cherolet. Anybody who thinks Milton and Sarles won't put up a struggle has never seen these two wounded men in action. Ralph DelPalma, who has been turning miles per hour into money in the bank for so long that most folks think he must be a hundred years or so old, has been working hard to get his new French Bullot racer into the very best of condition and reports that for the first time since he installed the new motor, his little ear is on a par with the famons Ballet of last ear, which everyone knows was the fastest thing that ever turned the Los Angeles basin. Jimmy Murphy, winner of the French Grand Prix and ace of the Deuenberg racing squadron, has been tuning up his car and, like DePalma, has an idea that the final race of the 1921 Speedway season will find his car in better shape than at any time previously this year. Jimmy won the $50 mile race that christened the Los Angeles Speedway two years ago and has always been waiting the starter's flag. To name the entire hat of individual drivers and tell their past history would be like reading off the Blue Book of Speed. They're all there and all raring to go. Eddie Hearn, holder of the world's competitive record made at the Cotati track a few weeks ago, Eddie Miller, Wild Wilbur D'Alene, Jerry Wonderlich and a half a dozen others are waiting the starter's flag. Prospects for a brand new record are regarded as of the best. Murphy, in winning the opening race, set a record which Sarles, in winning last year, failed to equal by only a fraction of a mile per hour. With every thing pointing to even closer competition this year than ever before there seems to be no reason for fearing that the record won't go. MARRIAGE LICENSES In Santa Ana— Elon Lory Roehm, 20.
