EARLY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS That is wedlock forced, but a hell, in age of discord and contrual strife? Thereas the contrary bringeth forth bliss, and is a pattern of celestial peace. —Shakespeare. Congress continues to kill time without any compunction. Worry is a surtax on one's energies and mental capabilities. Anarchists and violent radicals om abroad should be excluded rigly from the United States. China comes before the Arms Conrence with ten points. She perhaps membered the unlucky "fourteen bints" and kept the number down. The proposed naval holiday will be the world5s Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas all rolled into one. The poor man has his compensaons. He does not have to lie awake orrying over surtaxes on his inme. China objects to the great powers titting at feast, carving her as the cece de resistance, and dividing the white and the dark meat. There was a dull day in Los Angles recently in which only one dozen automobiles were stolen. But the hortage of these thefts was made up ne next day. If Christopher Columbus were in he flesh today and were familiar with United States history, he would ashamed of the fact that he discovered America. AMERICA'S METHODS IN ARMS CONFERENCE The Peaceee Conference, at Paris, was dominated by the rules and methods of Old World diplomacy. The Arms Conference is ruled by America's conception of what diplomacy should be. This was strikingly illustrated on the first day. Mr. Hughes, before the conference had time to break in the new seats, regaze around the hall, had laid beefore the delegates and before the world, the most stupendous scheme of world-disarmament that ever came, directly from any government to an assemblage of this nature. There was no concealment, no juggling with words, no gambling with circumstances. Having a great and important piece of business to do, Mr. Hughes, thorough going American that hee it, put the whole matter calmly, clearly and simply before the conference. This is the typical Ameerican way of doing things in peaceace, in war, in international relations. They call it "shirtsleeve diplomacy" and this homely phrase well describes it. When there is big work on, there is before this Arms Conference, it is the way of the representative American to take off his coat—literally and figuratively—and to plunge into the work. No long, palaverring preliminaries for the typical American. No murdering of time. No weearying of patience. No dallying, no sidestepping, no subterfuge. Bold, honest, vigorous, taking on hard and delicate tasks with relish, sincere and outspoken, Ameerican — typified in the Arms Conference by Mr. Hughes and his colleagues—center confidently upon this task of binding the world to peace just as it does the day's work — without bluster or fussiness or lost motion. ANTA ANA C. OF C. The pastor of the church, Rev. Thomas spoke Sunday evening theme, "The End Is Beginning," from the text with the servants to He said briefly: "Let us begin at says Mr. Wisecare in sense, says Mr Micawaggin at the end. The begins with an end. In ruins, the race piles then it proceeds grand I make all things new first page of the Bible tragic and catastrophic the last page a fair beginning, while all tween you have them development of grace. Man is ended almost infinite capacity again. His end most surely to the dark evenings to eclipses. He never known beaten.. But into the dwarf vision and Pathe result. We heard of that Civil cept that the blind Lost had writ has always been a the world's darkest race of men begins favor. The whole beginning comes to mention Noah, Abu Moses, David, Jesus." ANTA ANA C. OF C. PLANS WALNUT SHOW Big So. The committee was requested to report back to the directors at their next meeting two weeks hence. The Avocado Ass'n of So. Calif. will asked to combine its annual show with the walnut show and growers of tropical fruits will be asked to coordinate. T ONE OF NOBLE 600 BEAVER, Pa., Nov. 21.—"One of the a Hundred." This is the brief but informative epi-taph appearing on the tombstone of John Uhalto in the Beaver cemetery, marking the last resting place of one of the 198 survivors of the British "Light Brigade" made famous by Tennyson. Ubalto is probably the only one of the "noble six hundred" buried in America. Sixty-six years ago, Oct. 25, 1854, into the valley of death, rode the six hundred." Russia was engaged in an effort to wrest from the "sick man" of southern Europe, otherwise the sultan of Turkey; a division of territory including Sebastopol in the Crimea. England threw her force into the Crimean war to aid the "sick man." One of the most memorable battle was at Balaclava. Here it was through some mistake that the memorable charge of the Light Brigade took place. Walker, spoke Sunday evening upon the theme, "The End Is But the Beginning," from the text "Peter sat with the servants to see the end." He said briefly: "Let us begin at the beginning, says Mr. Wiseacre in Dickens' Nonsense, says Mr Micawber, let us begin at the end. The Bible itself begins with an end. The world is in ruins, the race played out and then it proceeds grandly to 'Behold I make all things new.' So on the first page of the Bible you have a tragic and catastrophic end and on the last page a fair and beautiful beginning, while all the way between you have the unfolding and development of revelation and grace. Man is endless. He has an almost infinite capacity for beginning again. His endings lead almost surely to the beginnings, his dark evenings to cloudless mornings. He never knows when he is beaten. This was Napoleon's criticism of the British soldiers at Waterloo and the same criticism was made by the Germans about our own marines. When, at the critical moment by all the rules of correct military procedure they should have returned or surrendered they adopted new tactics and drove an amazed enemy from the field. Mark Pattison says that just before Milton became blind he wrote a tract on the Civil war. Then blindness fell on him like a sentence of death at the age of 43; Milton that he had reached the end of his activities. But into the dark came a glorious vision and Paradise Lost was the result. We would never have heard of that Civil war tract except that the blind author of Paradise Lost had written it. There has always been a morning after the world's darkest night, and the race of men begins again in God's favor. The whole history of these beginnings comes to mind when we mention Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, David, Jesus, Wicklyffe, the reformation. SANTA ANA PLAYERS MAY BE SEEN HERE It is possible that Anaheim will have the pleasure of seeing the Santa Ana Community Players Production of Potash and Permutter with the same cast as made such a wonderful success of the play in the Santa Ana Production. Potash and Perlmutter is the first play given by the Community Players Association this season and played to packed houses during its Santa Ana run. So great was the demand that many people have requested an extra performance of the play that they might be able to see it. If the board of governors of the Players Association gives its consent, the play will be produced in Anaheim sometime in the near future, and very likely in Fullerton as well, giving the citizens of these centers an opportunity of viewing the finished production of the Association. The cast is exceptionally well selected and balanced, being made up of some of the best talent in the county. So well was the play received in Santa Ana, and so well interpreted by the cast, that the Jewish people of that city gave the actors a real Jewish dinner in token of their appreciation. Earnest Crozier Phillips, director of the association, is well known throughout the county for his brilliant work in producing plays. NAME 40 DELEGATES FOR ORANGE COUNTY Forty Orange-co young men will attend the Seventeenth Older Boys' conference of So. Calif. in Santa Barbara, Nov. 25, 26 and 27. The delegates will leave for Santa Barbara Friday morning by automobile and will return Sunday night. "Something More" is taken as the theme of the sessions, which will include addresses by Harry Rimmer, Fred Duekles, Harry O. Hill and Ralph Cole. Between 359 or 400 young men will attend the conference, it is believed, and the local officials anticipate enthusiastic meetings. On Orange county Hi-Y convention will be held at Orange Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3 and 4. This will take the form of a follow-up conference. Approximately 200 Hi-Y boys of the PROTEST S. A. MOVE ON WATER RIGHTS The John T. Carpenter and the Serraano Water companies, supported by property owners at El Modena and Villa park, are preparing protests which will be filed within 30 days, against Santa Ana acquiring a water right in Santiago creek. The protests are being prepared following notice given Nov. 8 of the application for rights which was filed with the water division of the state department of public works July 21, 1920. The published announcement stated that protestants must file with the state department within the following 60 days, protests setting forth reasons for objections. Attorneys A. W. Butan, of Head and Rutan said today that a protest is being drawn by the firm for the water companies and affected property owners in the district, but was unwilling to say just when the protest would be filed with the state department. He stated positively, however, that it should be entered within the next 20 days. They thot, his murderers, and so also Peter, that it was the end of Jesus they were accomplishing that memorable day but in the heart of the Christ was a great surviving joy for He knew it was but the beginning of a new day for the world with a new chance for sinning men to begin again. Sinner, there is pardon for you thru the shed blood of this Jesus and as when the prodigal came home for his new day and chance so may you come home to a reconciled Father and begin again.
