THOUSANDS HEAR
HARDING BY PHONE
In order that President Harding's address might be heard by many thousands of people, President H. B. Taylor of the American Telephone company, offered to place at the disposal of President Harding and the general staff of the army the latest developments in the art of telephony. The offer was accepted by President Harding in the spirit in which it was made, and an immediate contact was established between the army officials and the experts of the Bell system. As a result it was decided to install at the Arlington amphitheater special telephone equipment so that the President's oration and the exercises could be heard not only in the amphitheater itself but also by the thousands of troops massed in the cemetery and an immense concourse of people occupying the nearby hillsides.
It was also decided to link up three other great American cities by long distance telephone lines so that all which was said at Arlington cemetery could be heard by large audiences in New York, Chicago and San Francisco by means of telephone company's loud speaker system.
Never before in history has the head of any nation been able to address such vast numbers of his people as will President Harding tomorrow. Never before have the words of any national leader been carried to great audiences assembled at the far distant limits of his country. Such an accomplishment could not fail to impress foreign visitors, who must realize what President Harding is able to do now can be done at no distant day in any other country, and can be done between one nation and another, for the eventual furtherance of mutual understanding and harmony between all nations of the earth.
Preliminary tests have already been made in Arlington and San Francisco with favorable results, and most elaborate arrangements made to assure complete success.
Since the undertaking at the inauguration of President Harding when his speech was amplified to be heard by over 125,000 people gathered in front of the national capital, the art has been developed so that distance is annihilated it is now possible to transmit the speech of an orator over the longest wires and have it reproduced with as much force and power as though the speaker were in the presence of his audience, which as matter of fact he may be thousands of miles away. Moreover, what can now be done to reach audiences in a few cities simultaneously will eventually be possible for many cities so that representative audiences throughout the land and in every state can hear an important address by their chief executive at one time. What that will mean in future history is almost beyond imagination.

ENTERPRISE SPIRIT SEIZES LA HABRANS
LA HABRA, Nov. 11.—La Habra's business district is growing so fast that it is found necessary to widen the streets.
For a distance of two blocks the business houses on the north side of Central avenue have been moved back ten feet and the work of moving the building on the south side of the street is going on apace. In the same way, the congestion is to be relieved on Hiatt street.
A spirit of enterprise that promises to put the town on the map has seized the leading citizens. Dwellings are going by by the spires in the several subdivisions that have been dedicated the past few months, streets are being improved four new business blocks are now under construction and a fifth is contemplated. An additional packing house is being erected at a cost of $45,000, and two commodious houses are under construction.
This building activity of course means increased business. The brick building being erected by L. J. Wester subdivisions that have been dedicated the past few months, streets are being a stock of hardware. A. J., Wilson and L. M. Hart are each putting up brick store buildings 25 by 60 feet on West Central-ave and A. J. Johnson has a fine stucco building under construction on East Central-ave which he will occupy with a complete line of hardware.
The two banks of La Habra give optimistic reports of the splendid financial condition of the town and surrounding community. The Citizens
ALL CLASSES HIT BY HIGH HOTEL PRICES
NEW YORK, Nov. 11.—A writer in L'Ouvrière (Paris) gives an amusing account of recent adventures in a Paris hotel.
"The Americans complain of the high prices in our hotels; they are not the only ones, they can rest assured," he declares.
"Last week I came to Paris to stay the night and took a room in a second-rate hotel near the station. They made me pay 33 francs for a little corner about as big as a handkerchief, looking onto a horrible courtyard. The room was furnished with a mahogany bed, the bedding of which might have belonged to Queen Marie Amelie.
"A modern comfort there was a china washstand which was supposed to provide hot and cold water. But in the evening the cold water was hot and in the morning the hot water was cold. I must add that I couldn't sleep a wink; in coming in I had rushed to shut the window, but it was too late, the maid had done all that was necessary to assemble in this little nook all the mosquitoes of the whole quarter.
Commercial and Savings bank will organize a Christmas Savings club shortly with the idea of fixing the habit of thrift on the people of the community.
