ARCADIA HAS BAD TIME WITH WATER Montebello Field The Arcadia Oil Co. is having one of the greatest struggles against water the oil industry has ever known. Several months have been spent in numerous attempts to shut off water at 2975. The well is now standing cemented for the fifth time. Various brands, and special made cements have been tried out. In a recent production test made on Keeler No. 2 at 2865 the well made oil and water 300 barrels 50-50. The well was plugged back, re-cemented and is now cleaning out. The Comanche Oil Co. will soon have a producer at the La Mercedes Manly. An 8-in. string was put in and cemented at 2880. On drilling out the cement the well will be ready to drill into production. At the Calkins preparations are going forward to drill the 2745 foot hole deeper, carrying it into the sands that has made the Eggleston well famous. Bringing in one of the best producers in the field the Petroleum Midway got a 400 barrel well making gravity oil at Prugh No. 9. The new well was brought in at 3465. Work on Germain 1-B resumed at 2762. Baldwin-G-A is drilling in hard sand at 3000 feet. On the west side of the field the St. Helens Petroleum has 3 wells underway. Monterey No. 4, a small producer, at 2435 adjoining the Eggleston property is deepening. Monterey No. 6 drilling at 11200, and Monterey No. 7 is being rigged up. On the Howard-Smith property joining the Eggleston well the Standard Oil Co. has spudded in and is now drilling. On the Baldwin lease No. 59 a new well is drilling at 1400. No. 60 is grading for location and No. 61 has been located. WILL TEST BIXBY SYNDICATE 1 AGAIN Bixby Hills Plugging off bottom water at 4675 the Bixby Ranch Syndicate's No. 1 is about ready for a second production test. To date this well has not produced any oil and will probably be abandoned. The National Exploration Co.'s Olinda No. 1 is now drilling at 3955 and at this depth the well is showing lots of nice brown shale but very little if any oil. The National Security set a string of 8 1-4 at 3093 and cemented. Why so many wells and no production is a mystery. MAXWELL CLIMBS 10-MILE MOUNTAIN Emery B. McNoldy of Altoona, Pa., recently started on a fishing trip with five friends in a good Maxwell touring car. Their road took them over the mountains of Huntington county, Pa., a long haul of ten miles to the top. At the top, they met a mountain who stated that he had lived up there six years and had never seen an automobile go over that road. The fact that the good Maxwell made the climb with six passengers was almost beyond comprehension for him. So steep was the pitch of the road that second gear was used as a brake in going down. Mr. McNoldy states that the good Maxwell covered the entire trip of 104 miles with one pinch of oil, no water, and a little less than 5 gallons of gasoline, despite the fact that it was overloaded. Turton & Lumsdon, Maxwell and Lexington dealers, report the sale of new Maxwell / touring cars to W. Zumkiller and Frank Smithie. Drilling In Shale The Beatty Oil Co. at Eagle Rock, is drilling at 2588 in shale and carrying 6" pipe. The Eddystone Oil Co's Burkhart is at 2800 and showing a little gas only. All that stands in the way of the success of Bardeen's well now is water, and this will be taken care of the next cementing. The Chino Corona United is pulling out the six inch string and is getting rigged up to go down deeper. At 3678 this well produced heavy oil carrying some oil. It is the intention to go to 4000 feet. After going to 4100 feet and not getting enough of a showing to warrant further drilling, officials of the Gold Seal Petroleum are considering seriously the abandoning of the well. On refusing to flow the Mahala's test well north of Corona has been tubed and is now on the pump. The first twenty hours of pumping the well made 400 barrels. The oil is running 25 gravity. Drilled to 4010 feet and carrying 55 feet of excellent oil sand and having a gas pressure that was unusual the well presented every indication that it would flow. Just why it did not is one of the mysteries of the business. Drilling of No. 2 is scheduled to start in a few days. Cementing at 816 feet to make a test from this point to 1340, the Pasadena-Puente got water below the shoe and will have to re-cement. The Pomona Oil Co. is now drilling close to 3300 feet, the brown shale is carrying a little gas and colors. The St. Helena Petroleum Company is now making good time at Garner No. 1. Drilling is now at 2000 feet in hard shale. A few occasional oil showings have been noted. Center St., Ana RESUME DRILLING AT POINT FERMIN San Pedro-Point Fermin The San Pedro-Point Fermin Oil Co. put in 375 feet of 5-2 casing and resumed drilling. At 350 the gas showed up rather strong and there was some fear of losing the hole drilling without the big pipe. Located up against a steep cliff and right in the breakers at high tide, the well is something new in the off. Checking up the formation changes in the Los Angeles Harbor and Development Co.'s well at 400 feet, it is found that the changes are coro-rating nicely, but running a little lower. Taxi!
