ISSUE NEW MAP OF HUNTINGTON BEACH A new large scale map of the Huntington Beach oil field is now ready for distribution at the various offices of the state mining bureau. The map is drawn to a scale of 500 feet to the ranch and is large enough to show accurately oil holdings of all sizes from "rancher" to town lots, and also the locations and present stage of development of the wells. The unfortunate speculative, stock-jobbing activities which predominated at Huntington Beach during the early days of drilling have finally given place to the more ordinary and profitable methods of development of an oil field. During the past two years nearly 100 oil companies were incorporated with the drilling of lands at Huntington Beach as their objective. Sixty-two of these concerns have, at one time of another, filled notices of oil well operations with the State Oil and Gas Supervisor. Knowing that there are less than 400 producing concerns in all of the oil fields of California, covering about 100,000 acres of proved oil land, it is reasonable to assume that the 1050 acres of proved oil land at Huntington Been have been overcrowded with prospective oil companies. The first well at Huntington Beach was produced on May 24, 1920. No production of importance was obtained, however, until the latter part of 1920. At the end of October, 1921, Huntington Beach oil field was producing 16,500 barrels of oil daily. There are 55 producing wells in the field; 16 of which are idle. Ninety-five wells are drilling, and there are 34 derricks in which drilling has not started. The haste of early development and the race to be first to the pay sand caused a scarcity of reliable subsurface information and greatly hindered the efforts of petroleum engineers in working out the underground relationships of oil and water deposits and an economic method of development and protection. As a result, the first drilling was not done with the certainty, as to uniformity or strata and depth for landing casing to shut off water, which usually guides the engineer in outlining a program for oil field development. Most recent results of development show that the Huntington Beach oil field is an anticlinical structure whose axis runs approximately parallel to the beach line. Careful engineering study has shown that oil-water relationships are not greatly different from those existing in other California fields. DOCTOR SAYS RADIUM WILL NOT CURE CANCER LONDON, Nov. 4—Is radium hailed by the medical profession as a panacea for the deadly cancerous diseases a failure? It is, according to Sir Thomas Parkinson, a noted specialist and physician to Lloyd George, in an interview upon his arrival in New Zealand. It is not, according to other London specialists, who term Sir Thomas statement "nonsense." "Radium is a failure," Sir Thomas said. "It is not only not effective as a remedy, but it is dangerous, because its burning effect aggravates, instead of curing disease. Many leading surgeons have disbanded it in favor of X-rays." GERMS IN CHINESE EGGS PARIS, Nov. 4. — Twenty-four hours after they had thawed a shipment of frozen eggs from China, local health authorities say they found the eggs contained 26,000 harmful microbes. The officials advised against their use, except for biscuit making. The lower zone has been encountered on the north flank of the anti-collen only. It apparently extends farther, laterally from the axis of the anticline, that is, covers a wider area than the upper zone. Certain wells, out on the flank of the anticline, drilled to and producing from the Ashton zone, apparently did not encounter oil in the Bolsa zone during drilling. The thickness of the Ashton zone has not been determined. The average gravity of the oil is 24 degrees Baume. The first wells drilled in the field, by Sandard Oil Co. and others, did not penetrate to the lower zone. Along the axis of the anticline the top of the Ashton zone is estimated to be about 2750 feet below the surface. Petroleum Midway Co.'s well No.1 "Vollmer Myers" is drilled into the Ashton zone and is probably the nearest zone well, so drilled, to the axis of the anticline. The lower zone is separated from the upper zone by an intermediate water. The presence of this water, as well as waters overlying the upper zone, which in some instances have been carried into the upper zone by careless drilling, necessitates a careful program of development in order to conserve and protect the oil of both zones. Relatively the first zone is of greater importance from the standpoint of present production than the second zone. DO BUILD RESORT FOR DUSKY BRETHREN LOS ANGELES, Nov. 3.—Plans for the establishment of a negro beach community, including the construction of an amusement resort similar to those at Venice, Ocean Park, Santa Monica and other beach cities, were revealed today when announcement was made by Lincoln Beach Co., that a tract of 146 acres of land in the old Gen. Sherman estate, south of Venice and near Playa del Rey, has been thrown upon the market for subdivision. BLANKET SALE STARTS FRIDAY There was a typographical error in ad, last evening of the Army Surplus Supply store, located at 144 West Center-st. It stated that sale on blankets would start Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, and it should have read Friday and Saturday. Fame is fickle. Now an adventurous youth has volunteered to lead an expedition to look for Dr. Cook. Europe's fastest typist has arrived, and she can "type" faster than a woman can talk. Well we can afford to lose one companionship. You tell your son never to fight unless the other boy hits him first. And still you kick if it works out that way.
