DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS
O love! thou sternly dost thy power maintain,
And wilt not bear a rival in thy reign;
Tyrants and thou all fellowship disdain.
—Dryden.
President Harding's affability keeps him out of many a sharp tilt.

Plain, old-fashioned honesty and candor should be in evidence in the disarmament conference.
Those alleged Russian crown jewels are about as numerous as alleged Mayflower descendants.
Should that disarmament conference do its duty, the war lords will have to hunt a more useful occupation.
If you would keep your boy or girl morally pure, know where he or she goes and what kind of company he or she is in.
The fact that women are to participate in the disarmament conference creates the expectation that there will be nothing secret about the proceedings.
ARMY OF DEFENSE VAST: RESERVE PLANS
The standing army of the United States, by act of Congress, has been reduced to a smallness of numbers of personnel that would be startling, provided the army thus maintained were the Nation's sole means of defense. But back of the front line establishment is to be a huge reserve citizen army of more than 4,000,000 effective fighting men, capable of being mobilized quickly. The General Staff of the army has worked out plans whereby this huge force of reserves may be kept in training and provision made for their mobilization within a few weeks, should the emergencies of war require.
So long as the world runs along on the old plan of each nation looking out for itself, and all nations maintaining heavy armaments, it behooves the United States to keep itself reasonably well prepared to cope with any crisis of war which might arise. This reserve army system is adopted with this object in view to give the Nation adequacy of defense should it be attacked; and to lend the prestige which preparedness to defend itself gives any country. At the same time the Nation is not burdened with the expense of maintaining a vast regular army, and it also escapes the evils of militarism which might crop out, in some measure, if the regular establishment were composed of hundreds of thousands, or millions, of men.

SHELL CO. LEADING SIGNAL HILL WORK
Long Beach
The Shell Company of California continue to lead the development work at Signal Hill and now has its second producer. The Shell's new well Horsch No. 1 completed at 2735 went on a production tes early last week and is now making a regular production of better than 400 barrels. The new well is making clean oil. The production of the Shell Company will be further increased in a few days by the advent of Alamitos No. 3. Passing a successful test on the water, Alamitos No. 3 is in the brown shale at 3200 and the formation carries oil in quantity. Alamitos No. 2 is close to 2800 in the brown shale. Babb-Tucker is in the oil sand at 3125 and looks very good. Jones No. 1 shows 2850 in the brown shale. Martin No. 1 is a new well rigged up and spudded in. Neasa No. 1 is still held with a fishing job at 2792. Pickler No. 1 re-cemented at 2499. Stak Miller No. 1 at 3096 is fishing. Wilbur No. 1 is close to 2000 feet in the blue shale. Goddard No. 1 is rigged up. Hutton Community No. 1 is a new Shell well and is building.
Drilling on the Crest Oil Company's No. 1 is now at 2950 and the well is showing up very nicely. The sandy brown shale is scarrying a lot of oil and is lively with gas.
Drilling on the Dabney Oil Syndicate No. 2 has been temporarily suspended. Conditions at No. 1 warranted the focusing of attention and capital and No. 2 will stand until something definite is known about No. 1. No. 1 is now drilling at 3365 and to date has not shown any oil.
Figuring that the Shell's Horsch would make a well the General Petroleum has secured two properties adjoining the Shell on the west side. The properties of Messrs. Blake and Drake have been leased by the G. P. and a rig is being built that will serve as a community well. The G. P. and a rig is being built that will serve as a community well. The General Petroleum's Bixby No. 1 is now at 2800 drilling in shale and bldrs.
The Huntington Owners well No. 1 at Signal Hill is now to be known as Leonard No. 1. The new owners are understood to be a Los Angeles bank and will develop the Huntington Owners lease at once. The well is ideally located and should make one of the field's good producers.
E. J. Miley's Zenino No. 1 is beginning to look like an oil well. At 3860 something was struck that looks like the real "pay." It is the plan now to set pipe soon.
This showing is what the south side of the field has been looking for and escapes the evils of militarism which might crop out, in some measure, if the regular establishment were composed of hundreds of thousands, or millions, of men.

bringing in stage. The ten inch was set at 3004 and passed the Mining Bureau's test. It will probably require several days of washing out and "fussing" around before the well will be on actual production. Permission has been granted to allow Sarburg No. 1 to go on a production test at 2848. The well is now being cleaned out.
Southern California's deepest test well now drilling is the Standard Oil Company's Bixby No. 1. Making hole at 5450 feet the well is not showing any oil indications and will probably be the field's first "duster." Drilling on Alamitos No. 1 is at 2500.
The Standard has a rig up on the Long Beach Trust and Savings Bank lease, a rig up on the Sylvester, and is building a rig on the Lomita Land and Water Co.'s property.

BANDINI PREPARES TO RE-CEMENT NO. 1
Whittler and Santa Fe Springs.
The Bandini Oil Co. is getting ready to re-cement its No. 1 under pressure at 3600. Drilled to 4050 feet, the well has showed enough oil to assure a commercial producer and the only thing that stands in the way of the well's success is the shutting off of the water.
The reported showing of oil by the La Habra Midway and the effect of increasing interest in the well. The showing was in the shale at 1675 and was of very little importance. The showings were colors only and occur in almost all the sazes in the California field. Drilling on the La Habra Midway is now at 1745 in hard sandy shale.
The So. Cal. had a streak of luck. The hole caving at 2345 caught the tools and held the well with a three weeks' fishing job. The tools were recovered and the drilling can now resume at 2345.
The Standard Oil Co.'s Bastanchury No. 1, a former small producer, is redrilling and deepening at 4325. Indications for a deep producer are fair. Bastanchury No. 9 at 4338 is making about 50 barrels.
Whitley's No. 5, redrilled and deepened frhm 2365 to 2565, came in at 250 barrels but did not hold up. The tubing was lowered and now No. 5 is mbaking about 150 barrels. No. 6 at 2775 is in sandy brown shale. No. 7 at 2231 still stands idle.
The Amalgamated Oil Co.'s Butterworth, the deep test well cemented some time ago at 4670 has not drilled out. The Amalgamated is going to make a deep test well out of this one and is taking plenty of time with all the operations.
Drilling on the Scientific Oil Co.'s well at Santa Fe Springs is now at 1425. The formation for the past 100 feet has been so hard that only a few feet a day is all that can be drilled.
The Union Oil Co.'s Bell No. 1 secured a water test at 3763 and is ready to go ahead with drilling.
HICKS EXPERIENCES TROUBLE WITH TEST
Hawthorne-Redondo.
Kitselman encountered some difficulty in getting his Hicks No. 3 ready for a production test. The intention was to set a cement plug at 3823 feet and test out a showing. The sand heaved and disturbed the plug, causing the job to fail. The well is now being cleaned out at 3920 and a second cementing tried. The well is showing a considerable amount of gas. Playa Del Rey is hung up with casing trouble at 1700 ft.
The Standard Oil Co. is pulling out of Hawthorne. Bohon No. 1 drilled to 5155 feet, failed to show any oil and is being abandoned. On adjoining property the Landowners No. 1 went to 2800 and is also being abandoned.
The Union Oil Co.'s Gardena well Sommers No. 1 is no wclose to 4200 feet and is not showing any oil. It begins to appear that this may be a "duster."
On the Francis lease at Redondo, the Union's No. 1 is now at 2500 in brown sandy shale and has already had a number of encouraging showings.
Not a bit discouraged is the attitude of Chanser Canfield Midway over the outlook of the Redondo field in general and the discovery well in particular. Officials of the company are convinced that they have a big field and will go ahead immediately with its development. The perforated pipe is to be pulled from the discovery well and an examination made of the perforations. It is believed that the perforations have either filled up or they originally were defective. Work is scheduled to begin on a second well soon. Chanser Canfield Midway officials are of the opinion that the discovery well has just taped the surface or upper sand and that deeper is a second sand similar to the one found in all the fields that have been discovered in Southern California.
BIXBY SYNDICATE ON PUMPING TEST
Bixby Hills.
The Bixby Ranch Syndicate stopped drilling at 4740 and the well put on a pumping test. It is understood that the drilling all the way down did not show any oil or indications of it. The pumping test is a sort of make sure. The well is pumping a little clear water.
The National Exploration Co. is now drilling ahead on the Chino well at 1400. The formation now is running in hard brown shale. Olinda No. 1 at 3700 is in the conglomerate.
The National Security Company (Beatty) is making hole at 3100. At this depth the reported formation is brown shale, and the formation is carrying some gas.

"In a Boat," Columbia record, at Austin's, 308 E. Center.
In the olden times Eagle came down to the earth and assumed the form of a man. Then he wanted to get married. He started out in search of a squaw suitable to be his wife.
He went first among the white people; but he did not like the women of that tribe because they talked too much and told too many lies. He was wise.
Then he went among the black people but he could find no girl to suit him in that tribe.
Then he went among the Indian tribes, assuming always the form of an eagle while he was travelling, but immediately becoming a man again when he saw an Indian village. We will not mention the names of the different tribes he visited, for he found fault with all the squaws of those tribes but one.

At the first Indian village he found that the squaws there tattooed their faces. He did not like the squaws of the next tribe he found, for there they wore their hair cut short in defiance of the evident intent of the Great Spirit. He was wise.

COURTSHIP OF EAGLE-MAN
BY "INDIAN" MILLER
At the next village he could not bring himself to like
the girls because they were too fat. So he went from
village to village and from tribe to tribe, courting the
squaws but always finding fault with them. Some he
disliked because they were lazy; others were too ugly;
some were too dirty; and so forth.
But at last he reached a village of the Apaches.
There he saw two beautiful girls gathering corn in a
field. One of them was lazy and the other was industrious.
When they saw him the lazy one ran away,
but the industrious one did not. She fell in love with
Eagle-Man at first sight; and this was to his liking,
for he did not have to use force in persuading her to go
with him. Eagle-Man was wise in his choice.

If you could watch the inspection of raw materials at the Savage Tire factory, you would be forcibly reminded of this courtship of Eagle-Man. It is a rigid inspection indeed, for raw materials play an important part in the making of the tires that are Built to Excel. Exemplified indeed is this in the big, handsome Savage Cord, known to motorists as the Aristocrat of Tires.
