"DROP THE HANDKERCHIEF
A snatch of game-song lifted
In childish treble gay
Take us back to childhood
And the games we used to play.
Young again, we listen;
Gone each care and grief,
As we watch them in their merriment
Play "drop the handkerchief."
"I Measure My Love to Show You,"
We sang to motions neat.
"London Bridge is Falling Down"
To tread of shuffling feet.
"Here We Go 'Round the Mulberry Bush,'"
And "Richman, Poerman, Thief."
But the nicest of all the games we played
Was "Drop the Handkerchief."
"Meenie, Meenie, Miny Mo"
Over and over again.
"Oats, Peas, Beans and Barley Grow"
We played in sun or rain.
But "Drop the Handkerchief," I loved best
Of all games old or new.
For every time, though you forget,
I dropped it behind you.
"See-Saw, Margery Daw"
Comes back over the years.
"Teeter-totter, Bread and Water"
Sometimes ended in tears.
"Heavy, Heavy Hangs Over My Head;"
"Blackman" and "Follow the Chief"
But the very nicest game we played
Was "Drop the Handkerchief."
"I've Come to See Miss Jenny Ann Jones!"
"The Farmer In the Dell";
"Pussy Wants a Corner" and
"The Old Witch In the Well";
"Hippety-hop to the Barber-shop"
And "Post-office," none forget.
But "Drop the Handkerchief I'm quite sure,
Was of all the games, our pet,
"Scotland's Burning," and "Three Blind Mice."
We sang to roundelay;
"Hide Go Seek" all over the house or where-ever and as we may;
"Button! Button!" "Hide the Thimble";
Oh those care-free years:
Just now there's need of handkerchief To wipe the foolish tears.
—Isabel Sheperd, Anaheim.
