TEMPLE GIVES $200 FOR S. S. MEETING In spite of the rain yesterday morning a large audience gathered at the White Temple. Mr. Charles Eygabroad announced to the congregation that $500 would be needed for incidental expenses connected with the entertainment of the State Sunday School convention in Anaheim, Nov. 8, 9 and 10. The White Temple was asked for $200 and this was quickly provided for. Mrs. A. A. May sang, "I Love Thee Lord," with full, rich voice and intelligent interpretation. Dr. Geissinger's subject was Exodus 33::18-19, and 14: "I beseech thee show me thy glory." And God answered Moses, I will make my goodness pass before thee; my presence shall go with thee and I will give thee rest. "There is something very touching and humane in this plaintive cry of Moses. Here is a man who from his babyhood had been taught to trust God. His very existence rested back upon the providence of God. He had been mothered and nurtured by a great woman's unfaltering faith in God. Every crisis of his life had arisen because of his faith in God. He had cast his lot with his kinsmen because of his faith in God. He had not been able to escape God on the desert. This man had spoken before Pharoah on behalf of the living God. He has led his people out of the brickfields, thru the flood, across the desert to this mountain where he has been for days communing with God. Indeed, a fellow countryman spoke rightly of Moses when he said, 'He always sought to keep the good will of Him who dwelt in the bush.'" "Moses was a man of God, and yet here he seems to be uncertain of himself and of God." "So Job cried: 'Oh that I might find him,' and Philip, said: 'Show us the Father and it suffice,' 'to he had walked for days and weeks, and months and years with the son of God. The text is the natural cry of the heart: 'Show me thy glory.' It is not that the spiritual glory does not flood the mortal medium with a vaster meaning. It is that we desire to know that this blazing glory is reality and not phantasm." "I ask you to think of two things many protests are being made against the proposal of the State Highway Commission to begin construction on the Coast Highway between the mouth of Santa Monica Canyon and the south boundary of the Malibu ranch. Orange, co., officials and representatives of civic organizations are preparing to join forces with Los Angeles-co. In an effort to persuade the State Board to begin construction in a section where there are no adequate roads and where a dense population is to be served. To start work in the Malibu district would close the Malibu road for 15 months. This is a road for which the people have waited 15 years and over which Los Angeles-co. has spent much money and time in litigation and otherwise. The most strenuous objection to the State's program as it now appears however, is being made in Los Angeles and Orange, co.s. There is no adequate coast road south of Long Beach and early construction of that portion of the State Highway would greatly benefit a thickly populated territory. Beginning of work between Seal Beach and Serra would, therefore, provide a road that is badly needed by a large number of people and would not interrupt traffic to the extent that work in the Malibu district would. It would also furnish much needed relief of the traffic congestion along the present route of travel to San Diego, where both local and through travel are forced to use the one route. The fact that the State Highway Commission is starting on the construction of the Carmel to San Simeon road and putting off construction of the essential highway in Los Angeles and Orange-co. is being cited as another example of the State's much criticised policy of failing to build essential roads, a policy in utter disgard of the wishes of the people most interested. That portion of the Carmel to San Simeon road for which bids were received is ten miles long, being between the north boundary of San Luis Obispo county and a point six miles north of San Simeon. This road passes through a district where few people live. Residents of Los Angeles and Orange county directly "So Job cried: 'Oh that I might find him,' and Philip said: 'Show us the Father and it sufficeeth.' 'to he had walked for days and weeks, and months and years with the son of God. The text is the natural cry of the heart: 'Show me thy glory.' It is not that the spiritual glory does not flood the mortal medium with a vaster meaning. It is that we desire to know that this blazing glory is reality and not phantasm. "I ask you to think of two things this morning: First, the testimony of the Bible to the reality of religion, and secondly, the reasons for thinking that this testimony is justified by facts. 'The Bible is the biography of God. Or rather, it is a history of God's dealings with man. God meets man at every crisis of his life, reasons with him, kindles in his heart a hatred of sin, awakens faith in Himself and seeks to rescue the life of man. You see Him coming down the gleaming ladder of the night to touch the heart of the sleeping Jacob to finer issues. You see him meeting Moses on the desert as he flees from his great but baffling task and you see him sending Moses back to face the task in the name of the living God. You recall how he followed the defended Elijah into his cave and healed his sick heart and sent him back to rid Israel of Jazabel. You recall how he flooded the soul of Simon Peter with the glory of the Risen Christs; ho whe gave Paul and Silas songs in the night, and John on Patmos the blessing of the apocalypse. "The Bible is the story of the redeeming love of God reaching down to human need. Its message is that the heavens are never brass, whatever the seeming. God hears. When ever the trembling hand of man's faith reaches up it is clasped by the hand of the Divine Grace that man may be lifted up." "Is the testimony of the Bible in accord with facts? It is, I think, for at least three reasons: First, there is the fact of instinct. The bird peeks its shell, having never seen the blue above, having had no previous similar experience. It's instinct is profoundly trustworthy. Never a bird winged its way southward in obedience to the call of instinct that it found a climatic lie at the end of its flight. Jesus calls our attention to God's care for the birds and marvels that we fear to trust a universe that cares for even the falling sparrow. If God cares for the sparrow shall he not much more care for you, oh ye of little faith. "By profound instinct man turns to God in the hour of his extremity. When he is at his wits' end, he prays. This is an instinct like that which governs the flight of birds. Professor James says profoundly: 'Men pray because they can't help it.' The ship strikes a drifting iceberg. There is no human help. On board the ship is miniature world. Immigrants in the storage. Men and women of the theoretical world; business men, gamblers or construction of the essential highway in Los Angeles and Orange-cos. is being cited as another example of the State's much criticised policy of failing to build essential roads, a policy in utter disregard of the wishes of the people most interested. That portion of the Carmel to San Simeon road for which bids were received is ten miles long, being between the north boundary of San Luis Obispo county and a point six miles north of San Simeon. This road passes through a district where few people live. Residents of Los Angeles and Orange county communities directly affected severely condemn the policy of neglecting construction of an important stretch of highway in favor of a road that will serve so few. It is recalled in this connection that the State promised to build the trunk lines, then the essential highway. This promise becomes more important, provided it is lived up to, as it becomes more obvious that the money available will be insufficient to build all the roads projected." High School Notes The student body held their regular assembly this morning. Coach Youngman had the platform. On a portable blackboard, the coach demonstrated the tactics of football. Some of the students do not go to the games because they say they do not understand them. After today Prof. Clayes says there will be no excuse for any of the students not going to the games. Coach Youngman made everything very clear and the talk proved to be a very interesting nature. Women members of the faculty are hard at work practicing for the basketball game which will play Thursday with the Junior girls. The announcement of this game is causing much commotion among the basketball fans. The Juniors are the school champions. Final plans are being made this week for the Freshman-Sophomore reception, which will take place at the Hi school Friday night. Log Angeles Street Phone 684 "The second fact to which I ask your attention is this: All life is a correspondence with environment. "When I come into the presence of the fragrance of orange blossoms I know I am not near the ice of the North pole. I am in a sunny climate favorable to oranges. You find men and women flourishing and you may safely argue that the world is favorable to men and women. Some people complain about the universe in which we live and modestly insultate that they could have made a better. But when we think that the present condition has produced such men as Plato, and Moses, and Shakespeare, and Lincoln, we are justified in thinking that the universe is a fairly good place to grow folks in. If you are but a scrub in this universe, it may be that no universe could do much for you. The fact and type of life enables us to make conclusions about the total environment. "Now what is the outstanding fact in man's life? I answer that he prays. That he offers obedience to deity. That he worships. Man cannot live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Man is profoundly religious. We find this in the most primitive conditions. Not only so, but as man's life progresses this religious instinct passes over into a national conviction. Here are a whole series of facts hanging together persisting and increasing in influence. What do these things mean but that there is an environment favorable to them? "Finally, faith is effective. Religion made Israel. It transformed the Roman Empire. It saved Europe. It has entered into the idealism of the Anglo-Saxon to redeem him. Religious faith has been one of the mightiest dynamics of history. It seems to be the one deathless force in the world. Religion made the saints of the middle ages. It made Augustine and Luther and Cromwell and Washington and Lincoln. Christianity is to day a spirit of life sustaining the higher morality of the modern world. Faith works. It must be in accord with the nature of things or it would have vanished before this.
