THURSDAY, October 20, 1921 SPORTING EVENTS EXPECT PLENTY OF SLUGGING TONIGHT A wild fire slugging match chuck full of action from the opening gong will probably be handed out to local fight fans at the legion arena tonight when Steve Dalton and Jack Iman get together in the main event. Dalton is one of the hardest hitting men who has appeared in a local ring, and Iman is no slouch when it comes to throwing a wicked mitt. Dalton is the south's real horse for middleweights and a win over him by Iman will create a demand for his services. However, Dalton is a hard one to beat, although a good many of the boys in this section have been able to get draws with him. As far as stopping him is concerned, that is only a possibility, but highly improbable. Jimmy Lloyd and Bobble Gray tie up in the semi-windup. It will be Jimmy's first appearance in the next bout to the stellar role. Gray is said to be a tough boy and the "battling Elk" will have his hands full throughout the mill. In fact, Gray has stated that he is out to stop Lloyd's winning streak. However, Jimmy expects to keep on climbing the nugitatic ladder and is out to stop his man in as short time as possible. George Gilmore and Joe "haney, and Kid Louie and Young Garcia should produce the real rapid-fire stuff of the evening." The fans know Gilmore, Chaney, and Louie and should Young Garcia hold up his end of the speed fest there will be all of the action that can be expected. The card as a whole looks like one of the best shows staged here for sometime and the fist emporium should be packed to the top rafter. Women will be admitted free at tonight's hostilities and the ringside should see a large gathering of the fifer sex. FANS INTERESTED IN BASEBALL LEAGUE That Anaheim, Santa Ana, Pasadena and Whittier could support a winter baseball league is the opinion of many of the local fans since the rumor of steps to form a league was published in Monday's Plain Dealer. Several well to do Pasadenians are said to have been considering the advisability of starting proceedings, and intended to feel out the pulse of the district named within a short time. Billy Knott, assistant manager of the State Champion Elks' club, says: "Altho I would not favor a league during the regular season because of the interference it would cause to the Elks' league, I would, however, like to see this section organize a winter league. Of course, one of the drawbacks here is the lack of a park, but I believe that can be overcome if enough interest in the proposition is manifested. There are hundreds of fans in Anaheim who would like to see good ball if there was a place here to hold games. Even during the Elks' season when we play on the Fullerton park there are many come out to that remote place and so I believe that a park in town could be made to pay." There are several others in town who feel about the same as Mr. Knott about the prospects here, and with the right boosting a league should materialize. Several Santa Ana men have expressed the belief that the neighboring city fans would get behind a movement of this kind and organize a first class club. Anaheim could have one of the best teams on the circuit, using the Elks' players as a neclus for the local team. The sporting department of the Plain Dealer will publish, in these columns, views of the various fans on the plan. Outline your opinion on the proposition and mail it in. Women will be admitted free at tonight's hostilities and the ringside should see a large gathering of the older sex. POLY STARS READY FOR WHITTIER FRAY With the squad renovated by the refurbishment of last week's cripples, Santa Ana anticipates no difficulty in disposing of Whittier Saturday on the local gridron. Last week with a badly crippled team, no difficulty was encountered in tackling a good beating onto Anaheim, considered a powerful contender in the league race. It follows, they declare, that Whittier, generally conceded to be a weak aggregation, should prove feeble opposition to the local gridsters. Whittier met defeat at the hands of the Orange team, 30 to 6 recently, Santa Ana anticipates a victory by a greater score. Grammar School Notes W. C. Roberts, county truant officer, paid the various grammar schools of the city a visit today in order to locate the youngsters who are not regular in attendance in the classes. He found that the Mexicans as well as the other pupils knew they had to attend school and are going every day. The world's rubber consumption this year is expected to be about 250,000 tons. Pohlmann 7-R-2: address R.F.D. 2 Sorgum Sprout Likes Sparkes' Boxing Bill Cypress, Oct. 19. Sporting Editor: I had been hearing so much of the good竿 programs staged at the Sparkes' ranch that I thought I would attend Friday's affair. I got my money's worth. The first bout wasn't much to look at. The second was the most foolish thing I ever saw to be called boxing. But, say, we forgot those two first bouts when Young Burton, the Anaheim Tar Baby, turned loose on Joe Chaney. This bout was the show of the evening. Chaney was laughing at the Tar Baby in the first round but in the third and fourth all the laugh was knocked out of him and he was hanging on and ducking for all he was worth when the bell rang. This Tar Baby sure am some scraper. In the semi-windup, George Gilmore did all his fighting in the first minute. Thereafter he was hitting some soft place in the canvas. As a tumbler, Gilmore should be a success. Kid Leo went so far as to knock him through the ropes once. In the main event we were served two rounds of slashing good fighting and two rounds of dancing. The trouble was the dancing and fighting was all mixed up. But Soules was far in the lead in the fighting and about even on the dancing. Young Dudley didn't show us much of his famous punch we had heard of. Both fighters seemed to think the other was liable to use an awful wallop. To our way of thinking the Tar Baby-Chaney thing was the show of the evening. We are going again—SARGUM-SPROUT. Sport Chatter ABERT (Kid) Leo's win over George Gilmore is a surprise to followers of the boxing game here who that the Oaklander didn't have a chance with the slugger from Marysville. However, Leo got away to a good start and had the best ever in the second round. Should he be able to put Sailor Hackley away tomorrow night at Sparka' ratic farm, Leo will begin to be a good drawing card here. The Kid is a long way from being done in the four round game, contrary to opinion of fans. He was going good in Oakland a couple of years ago, and began slipping about one year ago. However, he is showing some of his old time form and should be good for many more fast bouts. Frankie Smith, the Santa Barbara banant, won over Joe Garcin, another good northern boy, in last week's show. Smith has been going like a house afire since beginning his ring career and has beaten some good boys. Billy Darrelly will bring him to Anaheim shortly where he will show at Sparka' farm. Smith is a boy who starts the ball rolling in the opening session and doesn't know what stop means. FOR SALE Ten acres year-old Valencias. C. has one of the greatest football teams this year she has had in her history, and a win over the northern school would probably mean that she will represent the best in the annual East vs. West classism at Pasadena on New Year's day. California believes she is two touchdowns ahead of Stanford, basing the hope on the showing of both schools against the Olympic club team of San Francisco. The Bears won by a score of 14 to 0 while Stanford came out on the long end of a 7 to 0 score. However, Stanford followers claim the breaks were against the Cardinals in that contest. A better line on the two teams will be available following Stanford's game with the Navy Saturday. Last week the Bears won from the sailors 21 to 10, showing that the so-called "wonder team" can be scored against. Young Burton, the lullaby baby, who has shown here several times, is again on Sparks' card tomorrow night. That the young colored boy can swing a wicked mitt is a plain fact and should he be properly taken care of Anaheim followers of the game will no doubt see him put on some red hot bouts. Vernon promoters got an awful panning from the Los Angeles press yesterday for letting George Adams go into the ring against Ad Roubidoux. Adams, according to Fane Norton, was a sick hombre, and hardly able to hold up his hands. Jack Doyle stopped the slaughter in the second round. Under the state laws, a doctor's examination is supposed to be made of every boxer before he enters the ring, and a fatality resulting from a match where no examination was made would result in some one getting badly "burnt". A hint to the wise is sufficient. Babe Ruth seems to have smoothed over his trouble, if the absence of front page dispatches is indicative of what has occurred. The influx of racing car drivers has begun to hit Los Angels, in preparation for the Thanksgiving Day speed classic at the Beverley Hills bowl. Altho the coast has always seen the best there is to see in speed demons, this year's gathering will not only exceed anything in the past in the way of fast cars, but will also see several new faces in the line-up. Earl Cooper, old-time favorite, will be seen on the start-line, having re-entered the game in Preno Ralsin Day classic. Pork and beaners are not the only ones forced to make their vacation and other trips by way of the boxen. Now comes novel from the north that state university students will charter a string of side-door pullmans to carry them to Washington where the Bear clash with the Wash. State University. Fight bugs are praying that the city fathers don't go away and forget to turn on the electric light switch, or that a bird doesn't light on a wire tonight, and spoil the boxing show at the American Legion arena. Tonight's all-American card is one of the best attraction presented for some time and the tistic shanty will probably be jammed to the doors. Johnny Adams and Irving Glasser meet in the main event at San Bernardino tonight. Glasser, who is boxing instructor at the state university, claims the const flyweight championship. He won from Adams in their last meeting. Adams is well known to local fans and has always made a good showing when he appeared here. Wilsey on Tuesday evaping. What Others Say DO MOTORISTS OBJECT TO A GASOLINE TAX? (Sunset Magazine, October, 1921) California has two large and influential associations of automobile owners. These associations have rendered most valuable services not only to their members but to the entire West by promoting the cause of good roads by sign-posting the highways in and leading to the Golden State, by urging modern and uniform automobile legislation and by spreading touring information. But these associations stepped from the path of constructive effort when their officers used their great power to kill legislation designed; to raise a large road-building fund through the taxation of the gasoline used by touring cars and motor trucks. Oregon and Washington are levying such a tax without a noticeable protest from automobile owners who realize that it is not good policy to issue thirty-year, high-interest bonds for the construction of roads which must be rebuilt before the bonds have been paid off. Bond-issue roads cost twice as much as roads built out of current funds and the automobile owners in one form or another pay the bulk of this double cost caused by interest payments. It is not true that the automobile associations of California have saved the car owners of the state millions of dollars by defeating the gasoline tax. On the contrary, they have deprived the motor owners of a large mileage of new highway and they have increased the cost of the highways that will be built by bond issue. The average automobile owner, we believe, would not object to a tax of a cent a gallon, especially as this tax would force the road posts, the high-speed, reckless motor stages and buses to pay a fair share of the cost of building and maintaining the roads they are using. Over 30 per cent of users of water from the Kings River representing 1,200,000 acres, have reached an agreement to future division of water rights. This, in the opinion of experts, makes the big Pine Flat irrigation project immediately practicable.
