Saturday, October 15, 1921 SPORTING EVENTS ANAHEIM'S COLORED FAVORITE BEATEN Anahiem's colored favorite in the squared circle again went down to defeat before the opslaught of Bud Soules in the main event of the weekly boxing show at Spark's fistic farm last night. Dudley was worried from the start and failed to make the fight that he bid against Mike O'Leary several weeks ago. Soules was also cautious in the opening frame but loosened up as the bout progressed and carried away the decision by a good margin. Many fans declare that Dudley was on the verge of a knockout at the fourth bell. The dopesters dope was all upset in the semi-windup when Albert (Kid) Leo claimed George Glimore to the canvass six or eight times in the second round winning by a technical knockout after a towel was tossed in to save the Marysville lad from further punishment. Both boys put up a fast and furious bout at the Elks carnival getting a draw. On that occasion Gilmore had a slight shade and was not in condition. His showing, however, made him a favorite in last night's fracas. A hook to the jaw in the first round stunned George, who never recovered from it until the battle was over. Young Burton is suplanting Dudley as the favorite colored boxers in this locality and as a result of his win over Joe Chaney last night his fighting stock has climbed several notches. Chaney substituted for Bennie Helier and made a game fight but the tide of the colored boys' attack, but was unable to do so. According to the report, the second bout on the card was a four-act force between two dusky warriors, while Kid Kbhline was K. O'd by Bat Abe in the curtain raiser. A good crowd witnessed the show. SAN BERDOO BEATS POMONA BY 8 TO 0 San Bernardino high school opened the Citrus Belt League season at San Bernardino yesterday afternoon. Sport Chatter The football game between Whittler and Pomona college, scheduled for Nov. 12, will probably be staged on Nov. 11, Armistice day, it was announced. The east today nailed Billy Shade San Francisco light heavyweight, as a possible rival of Tommy Gibbons and a runner-up for Carpentier crown. He smashed his way to a decision after 15 hectic rounds with Pay Keiser, Cumberland, Md., in Madison Square Garden last night. August Kleckhefer of Chicago won from Robert Connefax, 50 to 37, in their national three-cushion billiard championship match yesterday at Pittsburgh in 60 innings. Alfred de Oro defeated Charles Weston 50 to 35 in 34 innings. De Oro had a high run of seven. Glendale and Covina fought to a 0 to 0 tie in a scheduled toothal game of the central league. Scottf, who circled left end for 40 yards, and McCourt starred for Glendale, while Taffey did great work for Covina. The 2:05 trot, the feature event of the races staged at Lexington, Ky., yesterday, was won by Jane The Great. Sakura won the three-year-old trot while San Ando carried off the honor in the 2:01 pace. Walter Miller, middleweight champion wrestler, defeated Roy Anderson in straight falls in a match at Kellogg, Idaho. Earlier in the week Miller defeated Ralph Grand in a match staged at St. Maries, Idaho. Forty-two men were picked by Coach Duffy Seay of Stanford freshmen as the first string year. SAN BERDOO BEATS POMONA BY 8 TO 0 San Bernardino high school opened the Citrus Belt League season at San Bernardino yesterday afternoon by downing the heavy Pomona high team to 0. An intercepted pass by Thayer in the fourth quarter gave the San Bernardino team the touchdown and six points. A safety in the second quarter netted the other two markers. Haydon, Thayer, Dukeh Haygood, Byram and Wheeler starred for the San Bernardino team, while Blahop, Cooper and Bryan contributed the clever work for the Pomona aggregation. Pomona outweighed 15 pounds to the man. FIGHTERS WILL DEFY RULING WICHITA, Oct. 15—Mike O'Dowd and Mike Gibbons will clash here Tuesday night in their scheduled bout, regardless of the ruling of Attorney General H. J. Hopkins, it was announced here today. TENDLER WILL MEET KANSAS NEW YORK, Oct. 15—Low Tendler of Philadelphia will tackle Rocky Kansas of Buffalo in a 15-round bout at Madison Square garden next Friday night. FULLERTON WINNER The Fullerton J.C. football team won a District confederated game from the Pomona college freshman team by the score of 14 to 7 at Claremont yesterday afternoon. VALENCIA ORANGE GROVES GROVES What better investment than an orange grove in this section—a good Valencia orange grove? C. B. BERGER COMPANY "HEADQUARTERS FOR GOOD, DEPENDABLE INCOME GROVES" THE ORANGE COUNTY PLAIN DEALER ANAHEIM CALIFORNIA A PLAIN DEALER CLASSIFIED MESSENGER WILL TELL YOUR STORY TO 18,000 REOPLE IN NORTHERN ORANGE COUNTY Plain Dealer Wants Bring S Place Your Wants Before the Greatest Numbe EIGHT LETTER MEN WITH BAKERSFIELD With eight letter men in the line-up and an almost unlimited supply of other good material available the Bakersfield high school gridiron squad promises to be one of the most formidable foemen with which the Fullerton high eleven will have to do battle. Most So. Calif. teams which have games with either of these elevens will be keenly interested in the outcome of today's battle at Fullerton. It has been many seasons since Bakersfield has failed to get into the semifinals for the state championship. Last year the team won the Calif. title. Coach "Snorty" Smith said that a Fullerton victory over the Kern-co-lads would show that the oil drillers are the equal of anything in the state, and his team would go into the fray to do everything known into football science. Those who saw Fullerton in action against San Bernardino last week were very optimistic. Fullerton has a hard hitting team, that works with clock-like precision. The game with Bakersfield will be the last practice event before the opening of the regular league schedule which starts with the Orange game, which, in turn, is followed by the annual event with Santa Ana, time honored enemies of Fullerton high in the field of sports. The team which started against Bakersfield this afternoon lined up as follows: Shipkey, left end; Osborne, left tackle; Brownfield, left guard; Asker, center; White, right guard; Earl, right tackle; Callahan, left end; McDermont, quarter; Carpenter, Arroues, Smith and Salters half backs. Don Brown, utility infielder, and Bill Marriott, second baseman of the Chicago, Nationals, were released to the Oakland club of the Pacific Coast league yesterday. The players go as part payment for Hack Miller. Willie Hunter, holder of the British amateur golf title, defeated Donald Parsons of Youngstown, Ohio, 7 and 6 in the first round of match play in the annual autumn invitation golf tourney at Chawnee, Pa. Hunter was out for a while. NEW TODAY FOR SALE—Horses, A. E. Corliss, Box 47 on Magnolia-rd near Orangetoorpe. FOR SALE—1920 Ford touring, a dandy at $300. Terms: 241 N. Los Angeles St. Anaheim. Manual Arts and Los Angeles high school football teams loomed up as the two chief contenders for the Los Angeles City league title today as a result of the second round games staged yesterday by six of the squads in the circuit. The Pioners' easy victory over Jefferson 23 to 0, placed that Los Angeles squad on an even basis with the Tollers for the championship honors. Hollywood's win over the Lincoln high team, 6 to 0, was something of an upset, but the real thrill came when Pasadena high defeated Poly high at the Manual Arts field, 30 to 6.
