DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR READERS In peace, Love tunes the shepherd's reed. In war, he mounts the warrior's steed; In halls, in gay attire is seen; In hamlets, dances on the green. Love rules the court, the camp, the grove, And man below, and saints above; For love is heaven, and heaven is love —Scott. Those who do all possible to prevent fires, render valuable public service. There never again should be a "party" of that Arbuckle type, anywhere in California. None too early to begin stocking up for Santa Claus. Buy your gifts ahead of the rush. It is the comparatively few unsuccessful marriages that are exploited in the sensational newspapers, not the many successful ones—remember this. If a baseball club had no better team work than the United States Senate has, it would finish the season at the foot of the second division. The one and only way to reduce unemployment is to give men jobs. More theorizing and sympathizing wouldn't do it in a million years. The veterans of the World War gave the Nation and the world a square deal in 1917 and 1918. For heaven's sake, give them a square deal now! The country needs to open up two jobs where there now is one. This EXPLOITING VETERANS IN VOCATION SCHEME Startling indeed are the revelations which are being made as to the mistreatment of maimed veterans of the World War. Thirty thousand of them are being exploited in so-called "mushroom" vocational training institutions and farmed out by the government to sweatshops, and there worked under conditions that too much resemble slavery. That this is no idle rumor. The charge that these conditions prevail is made by none other than Col. Charles R. Forbes, director of the United States Veterans' Bureau. Colonel Forbes announces that he intends to close every institution of this kind. It is shameful beyond words that such a condition should exist and that the brave men who so recently risked all for freedom and their home land should be the victims of this monstrous cruelty. DAILY GREETINGS TO OUR William Howard Taft, in accepting the Chief Justiceship of the United States Supreme Court does not feel that he is stepping down from his dignity as a former President of the United States. Mr. Taft as Chief Justice regards himself as co-equal with Mr. Taft, once President. It is well to have this exemplification before this country and before the world, of the exalted estimate placed upon the role the highest court plays in the government of this Nation. It serves to anchor people's minds to the fact that law is supreme in this land; that this is a government of law; that in the ultimate there is nothing and nobody above the law in the United States. The dignity and importance—yes, the indispensability of laws and courts in a New York Letter Drinking fountains and sun-basking spots for the dogs and cats cherished by the tenants is the provision in one of Manhattan's newest apartment houses. Mrs. Edgar Saltus, wife of the late novelist, is building the house, and the picturesque imagination displayed is undoubtedly so explained. The drinking fountain is in the patio at the rear of the building with one side open to the Harlem river, so that scenery as well as nourishment can be provided the luxurious animals. Special consideration has also been given to the human inhabitants, and open-air playrooms for the children and pergolas top the roof where the women of the apartments may sew or dry their hair. The only flaw is that the same space has been thrown open to the dogs as to the cats, and there is some talk of correcting that. Steinway Hall is to be re-opened. This famous old concert place of New York has been closed for a quarter century. It seems like a revival of another age, so marked have been the changes since that time. Adelina Pattl, Parena Rose, Nileson, Lehman, Nordica—All the favorites of a former generation sang there, from the time of its original opening in 1867. When Dickens lectured in this country, Steinway Hall gave him his largest audience. And now it is to be with us once again. It opens with a recital by Felinda Mere. There will shortly be an epidemic of French gray and blue apartments, studios, drawing rooms and cubby-holes on Manhattan Island. Already apartment house agents are being implored to change red and brown wall coverings in all parts of town. For not only are blue and French gray chosen for the presidential suite at the Hotel Commonwealth now building at Broadway and Fifty-fifth street, but they were chosen by Mrs. Harding herself. In accepting the suite, the President wrote J.A. Almirall, of the hotel corporation, saying; "Mrs. Harding would be very reluctant to speak too definitely about any plans for the presidential suite you contemplate installing in the new Hotel Commonwealth. She is quite agreeable to have me say to you in reply to your inquiry that she thinks any suite is more attractively done if it is very simply done, and her preference in the matter of furnishings and decorations so far as color is concerned, is first for blue, and then French gray." President Harding's acceptance of the suite will give him a permanent home in New York, the first that any president has had here. Automobiles are all very well but they have no right to intrigue a man's affection to the point of alienating it from his own wife. Mrs. Max E. Koorfain is suing her husband for separation in the Brooklyn supreme court because of such untoward conduct on the part of the family's second-hand auto. "He spent so much time taking care of it that he might as well be married to it," she said to Max. "Not even an auto has a right to come between man and wife. It won't be more than a few weeks before the whole country will be jumping about like kangaroos. I suppose New York is already at it. "Pogo," they call the "game," which consists simply of using the new jumping sticks fitted with footrests and strong springs. They are sort of complicated, volatile stills only still harder on the beginner. Theance—yes, the ins- and courts in a STUDEBAKER AUTOS NEED LESS REPAIRS A marked ribute to modern automotive engineering design and advanced motourical science is found in a public statement just issued by President A. R. Erskine of the Studebaker Corp. of America. In comparing the records of car sales and repair parts sales for the first eight months periods of 1919, 1920 and 1921 it was discovered that modern designed cars are taking far less repair parts than cars did a few years ago and that while 116,000 more Studebakers are in operation now than there were two years ago yet the sales of repair parts are three per cent less. Stud-baker sales during the first eight months of 1921 were 101 per cent greater than during the same relative period of 1919, which would naturally lead to an expectation of a greater business in repair parts, but parts business slumped instead. In commenting on this reversal of form in sales, Harry D. Riley, local Studebaker dealer, ascribed this condition to the use of heat treated steels to a greater extent than ever before in the construction of motor cars. Advanced engineering design is also credited with a share of the results. The use for pressed steel instead of castings or forgings have also contributed somewhat to the condition for lighter construction which is possible with pressed steel with a gain in strength at the same time.
