SPORTING EVENTS That Santa Cruz Affair Surely Was Some Battle After studying the report of the championship baseball game yesterday between Anaheim and San Francisco Ellis at Santa Cruz, opportunity for which was denied yesterday afternoon because of the rotten Western Union telegraph service, it appears to have been some game. The Western Union never has delivered the report for one-half inning. After taking every possible precaution at both ends of the line, and receiving assurances that gilt-edge service would be provided, the running account of the game was from 50 minutes to an hour and a quarter in reaching Anaheim from the time it was filed in the Santa Cruz office. For instance, the lineup and batting order was filed in Santa Cruz at 1:50 p.m. and arrived here at 2:55, one hour and five minutes. But to get back to the game, Old Man Lewis made something nice for himself when he let the ball over the fence for a home run, several prizes having been hung up by brother lodgemen for just such a feat. It appears that pitching honors were about even, both Hughes and his opponent permitting but eight hits. Hughes fanned six and walked the same while the Frisco twirler struckout four and walked the same. Ramage and Youngman had a good day at bat, each setting a couple of bingles. Youngman got on by being hit by pitcher once and Lewis got in front of the ball twice. Apparently the locals were intent on reaching first base. Following are some of the prizes offered the victorious athletes: H. H. Benjamin of First Nat'l Bank offered one dollar for every strike-out made by pitcher. A. H. Osbourne of Fullerton Wainut Assn., offered $5.00 for the first three-base hit and $5.00 extra for each man brought in by the hit. H. P. Noll of Bake-Rite Bakery of SO. AUTOMOBILE OF ORANGE COUNTY 519 No. Main St. THE BIG FISH With Nine Years of Southern California Riverside Oct. LOUIE AND BURTON POUND FOR DRAW Kid Louie, of Placentia, and Young Burton, billed as Young Sam Langford, furnished the stellar attraction at the weekly boxing show last night at Sparkes' ranch and pounded their way around the ring for a draw. Burton, a stocky little colored chap, gave Louie the first hard battle he has had in a local ring for some time and carried the fight to the Placentia flash through three rounds. The first went to Loule, while the second and third went to Burton by a wide margin. Louie's grandstand finish in the fourth gave him the draw. Ad Roubidoux received the decision over Sailor J. Tollo in the main event. The sailor is tough and stood up under the Riverside boy's bombardment but showed nothing else. Chick Brown, veteran of the days when bouts went over the long route, stopped Kid Lamb in the first minum and a half of the first round in the semi-windup. Jimmy Lloyd, Anaheim's battling Elk, sent Delhi Fredericks back to Santa Ana without the Elk's scalp, which he was certain of taking, according to reports. Fredericks smiled and winked for the rounds until the Elk closed one eye and started to work on the other. Jimmy took the last two rounds easily and received the decision. Bennie Heller won a technical knockout over Young Alvarez in the third round of their bout. A give and take curtain raiser gave the crowd a good laugh. Young Dudley is booked to appear on one end of the main event next week. BILL KILLEFER TO WINTER IN SO. CAL.
