U.S.C. ROSY OVER SHOWING SATURDAY U.S.C.'s double pointed victory over two navy eleven at Bovard field, while not an important happening, was a cause of considerable satisfaction to Trojan backers last Saturday. The first eleven walloped the U.S.S. New York by a count of 35 to 0 and the second team white-washed the U.S.S.Arizona 52 to 0. U.S.C. has a good team this year, in fact one of the best in many years, and plays a hard, clean game. The attack was well executed, plays were run off smoothly and the defense was of the mid-season type. Conch Henderson's two backfield formations both looked good under fire, though it is hard to say at this date who the two men are who will draw the distinction of working with Capt. Charlie Dean and John Leadingham in the first big game. Against the Arizona team Henderson used Galloway, Tiernan, Dolly and Kincaid. In the New York game Dan Leadingham, Campbell and Lockett were started. Tiernan showed up the flashiest, and looks like one of the best half-backs in the South this year. He is fast, follows his interference splendidly and keeps his feet in fine fashion. He scored four touchdowns against the Arizona team, and was on the sending end of two beautiful forward passes to Leadingham in the second half of the New York game that resulted in two downwards. U.S.C. will be up in the front rank this year because it is in the cards. Henderson has many high class players, and if the luck breaks right go through the season without a defeat. The forward wall with Calland, center, Hester and Lindley or Axe, guards, Evans and Boyle, tackles, and Smith and Greene ends, shows wonderful promo- Sport Chatter Matchmaker Billy Darnley of the Anaheim Athletic club is taking several local boys up to San Bernardino for the weekly boxing show that is held in the Gate City every Thursday evening. Bennie Heller is to meet Ted Levin in the semi-windup. Albert Leo tackles Fred Grim-Kid Loulie clashes with Clarence Roubidoux in a return match and Bill Farwin hooks up with Fred. Grimm at 170 pounds, Joe Rivers, the old time favorite, boxes Mike O'Leary in the featuring event of the program. Tomorrow night's card at the Fistic Ranch is creating no end of talk. Ad Roubidoux, the Riverside boxer, and the latest Vernon sensation, is on one end of the main event, having drawn for his opponent, Sallor Ro Tollo, a tough tar from the good ship Texas. Tollo claims the banty championship of the Pacific Fleet and he will have to claim that and prove it to put anything over on the Riverside bearat. It promises to be a rip snorter-of a battle and should set the fans wild with excitement. Other good bouts on the card are the Chick Brown vs. Kid Lamb mill at 159 lbs. Both are ready, willing mixers with a kick in either mitt. Jimmy Lloyd, the Fighting Elk, clashes with "Delhi" Fredericks the Santa Ana mixer, at 138 lbs. Bennie Heller of Perris, meets Sammy Kelly, another good two handed slugger like himself, and Kid Louie, the pride of Placentia, is to mix with an ebony hued slugger from the village of Watts. Young Stanley and Red Howard will raise the curtain and start the fur flying. High School Notes Hi school students were a happy lot this morning that announced the EXPECT SOME FAST SLUGGING TONIGHT That there will be all the action that could be crammed into four rounds has been promised local boxing fana tonight when Soldier Graham, Camp Kearney welter champ and Johnnie Kline climb thru the ropes for the main event at the American Legion stadium. Graham has made some sensational fights lately that has won him a large following in the central part of the state and also made some good starts around Los Angeles. Kline hails from Preno and is out to stop Graham's winning streak. George Moss and K. O. Swall wilt meet in the semi-windup, and those who saw George in the opening show will agree that the old boy is a show in himself. Swall is from Santa Ana and has put up some good bouts in this district and no doubt will make Moss show all he has both in comedy and boxing ability. The remainder of the card looks good, especially the bout between Young Frankie is winning a string of every time he starts here. The balance of the card is Young Burton vs. Kid Romee; Young Garcia vs. Bud Garber; George Elmor vs. An Unknown. Women are invited to attend the show, the management seeing that everything possible is done for their comfort. Many women have become boxing fans here lately and each week see an enlarged group around the ring-side. MOTORCYCLE FANS PLAN NON-STOP TEST Three gold medals, one for each class in novice, expert and side-car, will be offered to motorcyclists in a non-stop contest to be staged by the Orange-co Motorcycle club Oct. 16, it was stated today following action taken at the regular meeting of the club members in their rooms in the opera house block, Santa Ana. "The contest will be one of the best ever pulled off here," declared C. M. Shop, who stated that entrants were expected from Long Beach, Riverside and Los Angeles clubs in addition to the local entrants. The contest will open at midnight Saturday night, Oct. 15 and will continue the full 24 hours, providing any of the motors are still running. Plans for the Mt. Wilton run were postponed until after the contest. SHACKLETON AT LISBON LISBON, Oct. 6 — Sir Ernest Santa Ana mixer, at 138 lbs. Bennie Heller of Peris, meets Sammy Kally, another good two handed slugger like himself, and Kid Louie, the pride of Placentia, is to mix with an ebony hued slugger from the village of Watts. Young Stanley and Red Howard will raise the curtain and start the fur flying. High School Notes Hi school students were a happy lot this morning that announced the assembly. The students gathered in the auditorium building-for a rally, and such noise and pop and enthusiasm! Songs such as the "Blue and Gold," "Oh Gee It's Great to Be from A. U. Hi," and "From Left to Right," were the songs sang to boost for the great gang that was held after school this evening. The game started at 3:00. Coach Yungman gave an announcement to the students. Captain Bill Cook also responded when his name was called and urged the support of all. The songs were led by "Stew Gates and Boh Lewis and the songs by Margaret Briscoe and Agnes Harkness. Coach Yungman announced that the opening of the Orange League Football game will start Saturday, 15th. The game will be held with Santa Ana on our grid. RAIL COLLISION FATAL TO MANY PARIS, Oct. 6.—Official investigation was begun today of the rear-end collision in the St. Lazare railroad tunnel, last night, in which 35 persons lost their lives and a considerable number were injured. Two suburban trains collided in the half-mile tunnel and flames, spread by a terrific gas reservoir explosion, made the disaster one of the most horrible in French railway history. Poisonous gases forming in the tunnel when the flames consumed the wooden railway conches made rescue work by firemen difficult and dangerous. Mrs. Ruth Morriss formerly a teacher in Phoenix, now of Los Angeles, visited her friend Mrs. Ella Seward yesterday and substituted for Miss Young at loafer school.
