GIRL'S AGE BALKS CUPID
Dan Cupid ran into an obstacle at the courthouse when Jake Watts, 22, of 2728 Manitou avenue, Los Angeles and Louise Elizabeth Long, 301 So. Workman-st., Los Angeles, met refusal in their attempt to secure a marriage license.
Nearly a month ago, County Clerk Joe Backs received notification from relatives of the prospective bride, stating that she was only 15 years of age and warning against issuance of a license.
So, when the pretty applicant gave her age as 18 in asking for the license, the county clerk gently but firmly requested a certificate birth or a sworn statement from her parents verifying the statement of age. He told her of the notification he had received.
There was visible dismay but little surprise in response to his announcement. Objections apparently had been expected but the couple protested that it was the young man's parents who objected and not those of the girl. They conferred earnestly with the county clerk and with Sheriff Jackson but the former stood unmoved. Consequently the crowning of the romance was delayed.
