SPORTING EVENTS
DUDLEY-NEFF EVENT SHOULD BE BATTLE
Young Dudley, Anaheim’s colored flesh who has been knocking them cold until a short time ago, probably reaches the climax as far as his local career is concerned when the gong sends him away against Chet Neff in the final argument at the American Legion stadium tonight. That Dudley will have his hands more than full is well known to those who saw Neff take Henry Gastine to a cleaning last week. Neff’s backers are basing their judgement on last week’s showing and declare he will come out with a win. On the other hand, Dudley figures this match either makes or breaks him as a main event and is out to give all he has.
A close second from a drawing standpoint is the Johnny Meyer-Jack Martin argument which opens the first side of the double main event. Meyer has been going like a house afire and won over Bert Tribby last week at Santa Barbara. The following night he came back and fought Kid Mexico a whirlwind draw. In Jack Martin he is meeting a man who, although much slower, carries a wallop in either hand that is liable to spell doom to anything with which it connects. Between Meyers’ speed and science plus Martin’s bull-dog tenacity the bout should be a good one.
Leo Houck is out to wipe out the loss he suffered at the hands of Young Frisco and tangles with Johnny Leach, of Santa Barbara. Leach will make Houck produce all he has and Leo declares it will be enough to win. Three preliminaries above the average are scheduled and the entire card looks to be a hummer.
Dick Donald, well known const referee and who has been the third man in the ring at Vernon for several weeks, will pass judgment in to-
COLORED TEAM MAY GIVE REAL WORKOUT
A big outpouring of fans is expected at Commonwealth park Sunday afternoon for the double attraction of the Los Angeles White Sox and the final appearance of the So. Cal. Elks champs before their departure for the state title fling at Santa Cruz.
The White Sox, speediest colored team in the southland, is expected to give the champa much desired competition.
The locals will be without the services of their noble captain, Buster Callan, who leaves Sunday morning by auto for Santa Cduz and way points. Curley McClain will do the backstopping for Hughes and Salveon, both of whom will be given workouts.
The rest of the athletes, several with their wives, will leave from Los Angeles on the convention special at 8 p.m., Wednesday, arriving at Santa Cruz at 9 p.m. Thursday. The contest for the championship of the commonwealth will be played at 8 p.m. Friday.
Manager Pete Hax announced today the bugs here would be given a glimpse Sunday of the new white sweaters bearing the gold numerals, “1345,” with which fine raiment the home boys are going to dazzle the eyes of the frisky Frisco aggregation, No. Cal. titleholders.
ANAHEIM VS. CITRUS
The Anaheim H. S. football team will play at Citrus high tomorrow. This will be the third practice game for the local team. Tomorrow is a holiday but the boys are ready to sacrifice a vacation to engage in another scrrimmage.
Al Sparkes, manager of the local fistic farm bearing his name, became naturalized last night in the local
CONLEY READY FOR BOUT WITH DALTON
Billy Conley has just put in one of the hardest weeks since his sojourn in Anaheim training for his go with Steve Dalton in the main event at Sparkes' ranch tomorrow night. Conley realizes he is up against a tough man and declares that he is going in to win as soon as possible. Although his other three bouts have been rather tame affairs, Conley is capable of putting up a whirlwind bout against Dalton, it is believed by a great many. Conley would probably have had a big following here if he had better matches.
His record from the Southland indicates that he is a terrific wallop when right and his slowness in the four round game has been attributed to the long routes he has been traveling before coming here. Dalton is probably the best middleweight trial horse in this section and victory over him usually sends a man's stock up considerably.
Some good preliminaries have been lined up for the card.
Sport Chatter
Arrangements are being made at the new American Legion arena for training quarters and when complete an effort to develop new boxing material locally will be made. There are many good projects here and a place for them to try their hand will assist in bringing them out. Several good local boys against outside opponents always tends to increase the interest in boxing events.
There are few referrences in the ring today that can hold friendships among boxers as well as Billy Darnley, local judge in the ring at Sparkes' fistic farm. Billy has given few decisions at the local club that have been unpopular. His efforts seem to be for sincerity and squareness which is probably accountable for his popularity among the gloves weilders.
ANAHEIM VS. CITRUS
The Anaheim H. S. football team will play at Citrus high tomorrow. This will be the third practice game for the local team. Tomorrow is a holiday but the boys are ready to sacrifice a vacation to engage in another scrimmage.
Al Sparkes, manager of the local fistic farm bearing his name, became naturalized last night in the local Elks and had his antlers tacked on.
Both Sparkes' and Billy Darnley, matchmaker and referee, are deserving of a great deal of credit for the assistance given the order in raising funds to send the baseball team of the Elks to Santa Cruz, where they play San Francisco, northern champs, for the state title.
Sparkes donated the arena and wrestled Bull Montana to assist in making a good card, while Billy worked to get out a good card and refereed the matches.
