MAN OF GOOD-WILL
IDEAL FOR TODAY
Dr. J. Golminker’s sermon at the Methodist White Temple yesterday was an exposition of Matthew 1:21. “Thou shall call His name Jesus because he shall save His people from their sins.”
“Men’s hearts are filled with a mighty enthusiasm today for all kinds of human betterment. With the spirit of the crusaders we face the problems of disease and poverty and war. The red-handed warrior is no longer our ideal man. But the man of good-will. Cheerfully and without mind we have poured out our abundance in money, flour, beans and all kinds of food for Central Europe, China, the Near East and Russia. Physical suffering appeals to every one. Methodism alone supports 159 hospitals and homes for the sick and the bereft. You perhaps read recently of the proposal of one engineer to control the waters of the Yellow river in China and thus prevent famine for one hundred million people. Another engineer proposed to build a dam from New Foundland to the mainland of Canada to turn back the cold waters of the Labrador current and thus make the bleak coast of eastern Canada and New England as balmy as the Carolinas or So. Calif. Such projects are born of the humanitarianism of the times.
“No one can be indifferent to this spirit and it dates back to Jesus who makes us all desire to be Good Samaritans. Only we must not identify Christianity with this humanitarianism. It is this, but more, Jesus did infinitely more than to give us the Golden Rule in a form that could easily become a means of interchange.
“One great interpreter of Christianity seeking to say what Jesus has done for humanity, put it this way: ‘He hath brot life and immortality to light.’ This is a great affirmation and within the facts, Jesus has made us all feel that human life is the most precious thing in the world and that it is of infinite value. It has been truly said that the modern face differs from our abundance in money, flour, beans and all kinds of food for Central Europe, China, the Near East and Russia. Jesus did infinitely more than to give us the Golden Rule in a form that could easily become a means of interchange.
"One great interpreter of Christianity seeking to say what Jesus has done for humanity, put it this way: 'He hath brot life and immortality to light.' This is a great affirmation and within the facts, Jesus has made us all feel that human life is the most precious thing in the world and that it is of infinite value. It has been truly said that the modern face differs from the ancient in that it has the light of hope upon it... And that is the work of Jesus. I cannot dwell upon this but call your attention to a very significant change wrought by Jesus. It is a matter of general agreement that when Jesus had yielded up His life on Calvary His followers were scattered, like sheep without a shepherd, and utterly cast down. They had hoped that He would deliver Israel. Then a change came over them. They began to see him, one after another. One, two, ten, eleven, finally a great company of men and women, upwards of 600. Finally a wide-spread conviction arose that He had arisen and because He had risen His followers also would rise. Thus out of the resurrection fact grew the resurrection of faith. Had it not been for the re-birth of the faith of those first Christians, Christianity would have died in Syria. So that Jesus' revelations of the ultimate reach of life, of the glory of the destiny God has willed for man, not only gives us our hope that is like an anchor cast within the vail, but our total Christianity with all of its varied and beneficent influences came out of our Master's disclosures concerning the future.
"But our text goes deeper than this and farther. It says simply and plainly that Jesus is entitled to the holy name of Savior because He shall deliver His people, all who come to him by faith, from their sins.
"This is the ultimate meaning of the life and ministry of Jesus; He is the Savior of mankind. This is an age of greatly quickened intellectual life. We live in constant expectation of greater knowledge and of greater achievements and attainments. Hence we are fond of thinking of Christianity in intellectual terms. We dwell upon the revelation of Christ. When we think of Him we think of His ennobling and comforting conception of God. Or we dwell upon His revelation of the worth of the human soul and the greatness of men, created in the divine image. We like to contemplate the sweep of such far-reaching principles as love, transfiguring all life. Or we dwell upon the idea of the kingdom of God, Jesus' ideal of a social order that shall yet displace our present vicillization so largely inspired by self-interest."
