GERMANS BUSY AS BEES, SAYS HIEL
"Factories in Germany are humming. Everywhere the people are working. The shops are bursting with goods. The best meals I found in Europe were served in Germany."
So declares Charles F. Hell, president of the Excelsior Creamery company, who has just returned to his home in Santa Ana.
Conditions in Germany were a revelation to Hell, he said. He expected to find a dormant nation showing everywhere the effects of suffering during the World War. On the contrary he found the country a bee hive of activity, he said.
"I was amazed at the tremendous amount of energy displayed on all sides," Hell declared. "There seemed not to be an idle factory anywhere. Everybody was working. I had believed I would find suffering and scarcity of supplies, but found, instead, stores well filled with goods and no apparent dearth of any of the necessities."
"I found not only plenty of food wherever I went, but it was good food, well cooked. In fact, neither in France nor in England did I obtain such good meals as in Germany."
"The Germans frankly admit that the United States was the deciding factor in the war."
Hell while in Europe, attended the International Rotary convention at Edinburgh, Scotland.
He has returned much improved in health, and has resumed his duties with the Excelsior Creamery company.

OIL SHAREHOLDERS TO PROBE AFFAIRS
For the purpose of starting an inquiry into the business of the Richfield United Oil Co., a meeting of the stockholders of the company has been unofficially called for Friday night of this week. The meeting is to be held at 7:30 o'clock at 200 So. Los Angeles-st, Anaheim.
Four or five stockholders of the company are cooperating in calling the meeting.
"The stock of the company has been as high as 60 cents a share," said W. H. Kennedy of Anaheim, a stockholder who is listed among those calling the meeting." It is now down to 18 cents. We want to know why the stock should go down. The company recently brot in a 200-bbl well, and the well is producing steadily. With this well developed, why should the price of the stock go down? That is one of the questions we want answered."
If it's from Witman's it’s good!
Hazel is nicely domiciled at her rooms at Mills College, where she will remain for the coming term.
Mr. and Mrs. Cook motored to San Francisco and remained a few days in the northern city with their daughter They returned to La Habra the first of the week.
Miss Mary Canfield, whose approach marriage to Ralph Kerchner, will take place next Thursday evening, was the recipient of a delightful party at the social hall by many of her admiring friends. After an evening spent with games and music and just before the refreshments were served, a shower of gifts occurred. The remainder of the evening was spent in undoing the many packages of handsome and useful articles.
That there is no great loss without some small gain, was evidenced in the doing away with a number of dogs here, supposed to be infected with rabies. "But there is room for improvement yet for the public street of the town is no place for a parcel of useful cura that make night hideous. It is to be hoped that the good work will go on." It is said here.
The Davis home was the scene of a merry dinner party Sunday. Covers were laid for ten. Those to enjoy the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Davis were Miss Bessle, Kerchundale and Lorel Davis, of Hollywood, Miss Avis Coffey and Brayton Phillbrook, of Brea, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Phillips of Royal Court St., Los Angeles, and Harold Felt, of Inglewood.
A. J. Olsen, a former resident of this valley, and still retaining large ranch interests, both here and in Yorba Linda, has been appointed manager of the Hollywood branch of the Los Angeles Trust and Savings bank. Olsen is very well known in this vicinity, having organized the La Habra Valley Bank at Brea.
C. H. Cretton and family will join the C. E. Hart's of Delano, at Mojave, where the two families will spend two weeks in deer hunting. They will pack back in the mountains at the upper reaches of the Kern river. The party will be away for two weeks.
