DAILY GREETINGS
Sweet as refreshing dews, or summer showers,
To the long-parching thirst of drooping flowers;
Grateful as fanning gales to fainting swains;
And soft as trickling balm to bleeding pains.
Are thy kind words.
—Gay.
Indmoderate living on a modest income comes to grief today, as it always has.
If organized baseball is not played honestly, it should not be played at all.
They are not giving the League of Nations many pleasant and easy things to do.
"The Lord helps those who help themselves" does not hold as a slogan for burglaries.
What the United States treasury needs at this juncture is Aladdin's lamp in good working order.
Some of them are in art for art's sake, and some of them are in it for the sake of what they can get out of it.
If all the promises made to sell oil stocks could be realized, what a multitude of happy investors there would be!
Should that daring aviator explorer succeed in flying across the North Pole, there is no reason to believe that he will drop a depth bomb on it and blow it up.
The day of big salaries for screen stars is past, says William A. Brady. But this dog does not mean that the day of big stories about star's salaries, by press agents, is past.
American schoolteachers have not come forward and proffered aid to the United States Treasury by offering a few billions of their savings. "There's a reason."
A glance at the list of divorce suits filed and divorces granted from days in law leads one to wonder how Governor Small may be innocent. But if so, why does he not welcome the establishment of his innocence, in a court of justice?
That Cape Mendocino region if possible should be made safe for navigation. The Pacific Coast should have no "graveyards" of this kind.
Kidnaping is an offense so nudeous as to deserve the severest penalty. California should do all possible to suppress this cowardly species of criminality.
The intentionally reckless speeder should feel the heavy hand of the law. Speeding is potential criminality, for it may result in homicide at any moment. There is no excuse for carless driving on any thorofare, anywhere, at any time.
The consumer too long has been treated as the legitimate prey of all who would take excessive profits. In congress, in legislatures, in courts—in every department of government—the rights and immunities of the consumer should be respected and conserved.
With becoming graciousness, all governments invited to participate in the disarmament conference have accepted the invitation and also have approved of the date suggested by the United States government—Aristice Day, Nov. 11.
Circumstantial evidence is never conclusive and in many cases is absolutely false and misleading. Criminal law never should lean too heavily upon the evidence of circumstance.
That superstition about the number thirteen is all bosh. Now, there's the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution—it has never had any such bad luck as the Eighteenth Amendment.
The heroic deeds performed after the steamship Alaska struck the reefs should not be forgotten. The sublime courage and self-sacrifice of men, some of them of the humblest station in life, should be cherished. The history of the sea is rich in heroes.

Carefulness with fire in forest reserves is particularly to be desired, at this time. As a result of the long dry season, everything inflammable is like tinder. Fires started now are likely to wreak great destruction, if not caught in their incipiency.
The value of wireless in saving human lives in disasters at sea was demonstrated in the wreck of the steamship Alaska, as it frequently is. Many a person is alive today because the thrilling "S.O.S." went forth, on lightning wings, to summon ships to the rescue.

Water is the magic element which mingled with genial climatic conditions, achieves marvelous things here in California. Flood waters should be impounded, and the state's precious supply should not suffer the serious waste which ensues when vast quantities of water run off to the sea in flood seasons. There is enough precipitation in California, if properly conserved, to meet the state's water needs, even though, as population increases and as industry develops, the supply of water is vastly greater than formerly.

GREATER PROFITS FOR THE FARMER
The plight of the American farmer is anything but hopeless. He is harvesting a decreased crop yield this year, it is true. But this is an undisguised blessing, reports gathered by the United Press indicate. For the shorter crop will bring a much better price than would a normal yield, so that the farmer will realize more for his products this year than he gets for a normal crop condition.
This will be decidedly encouraging to the farmer. It should tide him over the comparatively lean period he has had for a year or two. Truth is, the farmer has not been in such hopeless state as he has been made to appear. He has suffered some, as have all industries and interests. But he has not suffered ruinously. One or two years of lessened returns from his crops should not discourage the farmer. For he has had many years of abundance and prosperity and confidently may look forward to many other prosperous years.
BENEFITS FROM BUDGET ARE ENORMOUS
A pronouncedly good impression has been made throughout the country by the prompt and vigorous measures taken by the Harding administration to put the national budget system into effect. There is no political partnership in this, nor should there be. Politics has no proper place in it.

Republicans and Democrats should cooperate, without any party distinctions, in upholding the budget system and in aiding to make it successful.
Charles G. Dawes, while lacking in tact and brusque of speech, nevertheless is a man of great business abilities, sound in integrity, and fearless in whatever course of action he may essay. He has a long tenure in his position—for 15 years he will be director of the budget. This will give him ample leeway to mark out a course of action and consistent policies and to maintain them steadily. The fruits of this should be substantial reductions in the cost of government, with resultant possibilities of reductions in taxation. The immediate prospect of this retrenchment will be encouraging to the people and should stimulate economic activities.
HOUSE CONSTRUCTION BEING FOSTERED
Volume of building in the more important cities of California has increased prodigiously. All records are being broken, in some localities, from month to month and from quarter to quarter. Yet with all the building that is being done here, the dirt of housing hardly is offset. There yet is need of more houses.
Shortage of housing has been and is very acute in Eastern cities. In Pittsburgh the situation became so desperate that the Chamber of Commerce, thru its housing corporation, has undertaken to have constructed 2000 new dwellings in the Pittschut district within the next year. Prominent features of the plan are: Cheap money, construction not about one half the usual cost, and expert supervision without charge. The movement is wholly for civic betterment and without profit to the building corporation. The plan is evoking the active cooperation of all classes, including banking and other big interests in the community.
This problem of housing will not down; it must be met with progressive energy and with consummate wisdom and exemplary public spirit or it will plague the country for an indefinite period and will have serious detrimental effect upon social conditions.
"MUSIC HATH CHARMS" AS WORK INSPIRED
There is inspiration in music tired workers; it improves the morale and aides them over the weary, drab hours of the late night. This is the conclusion reached by A. Purdy, Minneapolis postmaster who tried out the phonograph on late night workers and has found the effect to be quite satisfactory.
That good music is tonic both soul and body is without question. That the phonograph is bringing to homes and offices the choicest music of the world's mastery proper may be rated as one of the greatest blessings of this age of wonders. The effect is not only inspirational up the people, but it has a refining end of the season.

MACHINERY NOT PUTTING MEN INTO DISCARD
Machinery is not displacing men.
Machinery, it is true, is doing the
work of multitudes of men. But men
must guide, direct and operate machinery. Wherever there is a machine there must be a man behind the machine to get useful service.
There has been wonderful progress in inventions in the last half century. Thru machinery and mechanical devices the whole industrial process has been revolutionized.
But man, the worker, has not been relegated. Beside the working machinery may be found the working man labor, create more demand for labor, as a rule. The more machines there are, the more jobs there are.
