LAGUNA AGOG OVER GAMBOLS OF VENUS The Laguna Beach Art Assn, by Frank W. Cuprien, Karl Yens, Joseph Kletsch, Conway Griffith and many others, and the West Coast Art International Assn., represented by Mrs. L. F. Ferguson and Mrs. Babelle Lord Frost, viewed Olive Anne Alcorn, dancer, said to have the most perfect figure in the U.S., as she posed against a background of Oriental rugs in the studio of Grace Jay Swan at Laguna Beach yesterday afternoon. They pronounced her figure perfect, declaring it to resemble more closely Venus de Medici than the Venus de Milo. Miss Alcorn had believed her figure to be Grecian, but the artists found it to be more closely related to the Florentine type. “If we begin early enough to practice natural living and holding right and beautiful thots, there is nothing which we can not do,” she stated, in explaining her theory. “Always, in my childish play, I held the thot. ‘I will have to have a perfect body.’ I have not the slightest doubt the thot did as much for my physical development as did the physical exercise of dancing in which I always indulged.” Celebrities of the artistic world have passed judgment of Miss Alcorn’s figure and pronounced it perfectly proportioned. Her weight is 125 pounds and her height is 5 feet 4 inches. With these figures, her further proportions are as follows: Neck, 12½ inches; bust, 34 inches; upper arm, 9½ inches; lower arm, 8½ inches; wrist, 5¼; waist, 26 inches; hips, 36½ inches; thigh, 21½ inches; knee, 13 inches; calf, 13½ inches; ankle, 8 inches. These proportions, say the art critics, rival the sculptures of ancient Greece, and as Aphrodite was born of the sea and came to gladden the hearts of the ancient gods with her beauty, so this golden Apodite went down to the sea at Laguna, and there gladdened the hearts of the modern lords of brush and palette. Following the private exhibition at the studios, Miss Alcorn was persuaded to dance on the beach in the face of the incoming waves for the delight of the populace of the fa- BEAN ASSN. FIGHTS FOR HIGHER TARIFF That the bean growers of California are not satisfied with the 1 3-4c tariff on beans, which it is reported as having been decided upon by the ways and means committee, is indicated by the continued activity of the Calif. Bean Growers’ Assn, representing thousands of growers, to have the rate at least equal to that incorporated in the Emergency Tariff, or 2 cents a pound. J. V. Mendenhall, president of the Association, has issued the following statement regarding the situation: “The tariff committee of the Association has had its headquarters in Washington during the past month and with the assistance of congressional and senatorial representatives from the state, has been able to increase the proposed rate from 1 1-4c to 1 3-4c. Thru this committee, the Calif. State Market Director, bean growers, dealers, farm bureaus, chambers of commerce and others in- 13½ inches; ankle, 8 inches. Following the private exhibition at the studios, Miss Alcorn was paraded to dance on the beach in the face of the incoming waves for the delight of the populace of the favored beach town. Thru this committee, the Calif. Try a Plain Dealer Want Ad. Job Printing at the Plain Dealer First: I give to good fathers and mothers, in trust for their children all good little words of praise and encouragement, and all quiet pet names and endearments, and I charge said parents to use them justly, but generously, as the needs of the children may require. Second: I leave to children exclusively, but only for the term of their childhood, all the flowers of the field and the blossoms of the woods, with the right to play among them freely, according to the custom of children, warning them at the same time against thistles and thorns. And I devise to children the banks of the brooks and the golden sands beneath the waters thereof, and the odors of the willows that dip therein, and the white clouds that float high over the giant trees. And I leave to children the long, long days to be merry in a thousand ways, and the Night and the Moon, and the train of the Milky Way to wonder at, but subject, nevertheless, to the rights hereinafter given to lovers; and I give to each child the right to choose a star that shall be his, and I direct that the child's father shall tell him the name of it, in order that the child shall always remember the name of that star after he has learned and forgotten astronomy. Third: I devise to boys, jointly, all the idle fields and commons where ball may be played, all pleasant waters where one may swim, all snow clad hills where one may coast, and all the streams and ponds where one may fish, or where, when grim winter comes, one may skate, to have and to hold the same for the period of their boyhood. And all the meadows with the clover blossoms and butterflies thereof, and the woods with their appurtenances, the squirrels and birds and echoes and strange noises, and all the distant places which may be visited together with the adventure there to be found. And I give to sald boys each his own place by the fireside at night, with all the pictures that may be seen in the burning wood, to enjoy without hindrance, and without any encumbrance of cares. Fourth: To lovers, I devise their imaginary world, with whatever they may need, as the stars of the sky, the red, red roses by the wall, the snow of the hawthorne, the sweet strains of music, and aught else they may desire, to figure to each other the lastingness and beauty of their love. Fifth: To young men jointly, I devise and bequeath all bolsterous inspiring sports of rivalry, and I give to them the disdain of weakness and undaunted confidence in their own strength. Though they are rude, I leave to them the power to make lasting friendships and of possessing companions, and to them exclusively, I give all merry songs and brave choruses to sing, and smooth voices to roll them forth. Sixth: And to those who are not excepted, all else in the world, I now proceed to devise and bequeath: First: I give to good fathers and mothers, in trust for their children all good little words of praise and encouragement, and all quiet pet names and endearments, and I charge said parents to use them justly, but generously, as the needs of the children may require. And I leave to children the long, long days to be merry in a thousand ways, and the Night and the Moon, and the train of the Milky Way to wonder at, but subject, nevertheless, to the rights hereinafter given to lovers; and I give to each child the right to choose a star that shall be his, and I direct that the child's father shall tell him the name of it, in order that the child shall always remember the name of that star after he has learned and forgotten astronomy." Third: I devise to boys, jointly, all the idle fields and commons where ball may be played, all pleasant waters where one may swim, all snow clad hills where one may coast, and all the streams and ponds where one may fish or where when grim winter comes one may skate to have and to hold the same for the period of their boyhood. CATALINA SINKING, GEOLOGICAL REPORT The claim recently advanced by Miles is ownership of the islands of the coast of California has aroused interest in them to such an extent that the National Geographical Society has issued a bulletin about them. "California owes her off-shore to lands not to drifting sands as the southern sections of the Atlantic coast owe theirs," says the bulletin, "but to the fact that the state is the center of one of the most active regions geologically in he world in recent geological times. San Clemente, the most southern of the islands, has risen from the sea, according to the geologists, until its topmost peak has an altitude of over 1900 feet. Santa Catalina, on the other hand, has been sinking, tho evidence of the slow movement is not apparent to layman. "None of the California islands is of any great extent. Santa Cruz, the largest, is 21 miles long and has an average width of five miles. It is also the highest, having a peak which reaches an altitude of 2407 feet. A typical daily program includes reveille at 7 a.m.; breakfast 45 minutes later. In between these times come setting up exercises, assembly, flag raising, roll call—and a wash, of course. It will be a busy day until the evening meal is served directly after "Colors." Thereafter games and camp fire stunts will fill the time until 9:30 p.m., when the scout will turn into his blankets to the soothing note of "Taps." A list of equipment needed is given on one page of the program, while the next page tells the scout to get his hair cut short before going to camp, as it will be easier to keep clean. He also is advised to have his teeth fixed if necessary. A toothache can ruin the best vacuum. 19 FIRECALLS IN YEAR That there were only 19 calls and two false alarms in which the Saints Ana fire department participated June 30, 1920, to July 1, 1921, was Chief John Luxembourger.
