New York Letter
by Lucas Jeanne Price
NEY YORK, July 22—Editors are a durable race. A. A. Warford, 75 years old—and a New York editor—decided the other day that 31 in the shade was good Coney Island weather and got out his bicycle for the ride there. Ignoring the heat and the 75 years, he made his way at a merry clip and was in two miles of being home when a trolley turned the corner and they collided. Mr. Wafford catapulted ten feet and landed heavily. Patrolmen George Groom helped him to his feet and an ambulance was being rushed to the scene, when the cyclist waved them all away and inspected his vehicle. It was battered but still there.
"I'm all right," he said. "It was my fault too. I think I'll be going," and before the dazed motorman or policeman could recover, Mr. Warford was on his way. "It's good for any one to ride in this weather" he explained later at his home. "It makes you perseire."
Archibald C. Weeks, of Brooklyn, swears that this is true. And one is supposed to give an extra margin of confidence to Brooklynites. Anyway back in 1861, William J. Weeks, his father, marked three tortoises with his name and the date, and five years later, Archibald, himself, marked his own name and the year 1866 on the same three shells. Finally the animals wandered away. And lo! The other day, all three of them came back to the old Weeks homestead on Long Island. Mr. Archibald met up with them, names, dates and all.
To think that is should be to a detective that such prescience as this should come! Joseph Itusse, attached to District Attorney Swann's office had a Vision a few nights before the late Dempsey-Carpontier fight. He saw the arena and the fight, saw Dempsey knock out his opponent; and saw him do it in the fourth round, just as per actual fact. This wasn't the memory afterwards of what he had dreamed. He has the whole office force to back him that he told them the next morning when people—a few—were the group taking entire management. Miss Grace P. Drake is president, and Miss Vera Schafer, vice-peralident. The entire project has been initiated by the National Board of the Young Women's Christian Assn., impelled by its interest in finding some solution of the dire housing problem. It believes it has found a practical "way out" for those living on a slender marging—and still hankering to live comfortably.
The amusing touch to the situation is that, though this first attempt at such a thing is being made by women, and was at first planned to be carried out exclusively by and for them, the pleadings of some despairing men have reached the hearts of the organizers and they have let them in.
Pliable masks, the invention of Alex Hall, sculptor, to have a definite place in sope moving picture corporations. The Mystic Masque Productions Co. has started taking the first of its series of novelties in which the masks will play an important part.
"Old King Cole" is one of the plays in which they will be used. The possibilities of the mobile creations were first realized when they were introduced in the "Four Horsemen of Apocalypse" on the allegorical characters of "Conquest," "War," "Hunger" and Death.
Some of the new motion picture companies continue to outline most attractive programs for their activities. I mentioned one or two recently and now here comes the Pyramid Pictures, announcing just sixteen pictures a year and every one of them guaranteed to be of real literary as well as pictorial value. The particularly assuring note of their policy is that of working in close cooperation with the authors.

To think that is should be to a detective that such prescience as this should come! Joseph Russo, attached to District Attorney Swann's office had a Vision a few nights before the late Dempsey-Carpontier fight. He saw the arena and the fight, saw Dempsey knock out his opponent; and saw him do it in the fourth round. Just as per actual fact. This wasn't the memory afterwards of what he had dreamed. He has the whole office force to back him that he told them the next morning when people—a few—were still making bets. In fact, so well has his story held up that agents of the Psychical Research society are said to be interested in the case. But think of it happening to a detective.
There is a definitely dramatic note in the appeal of "Jimmy the Trusty" to the underworld, of which he used to be a part, for the return of the jewels stolen from Mrs. W. H. Donaldson the other night. "Jimmy" who was the "Hawk" before he was "The Trusty," is now James Curran, 276 W. 122nd-st., and is living proof that a confidence man and ex-convict can go straight' if he decides hard enough to do it. Mr. and Mrs. Donaldson have been benefactors of released convicts on many occasion and it is partly with this ground that "Jimmy" makes the plea. "I plead with the underworld at large to aid me in locating and arranging for the return of the jewels," he says. "I want to substantiate my claim that there is honor among thieves and that all of them can be reached through sentiment when they cannot thrue the law."
The other day a New York girl broke her engagement because her fiance took a job as an express messenger. She insisted upon "something more romantic." And just a day or two later, one of those unromantic express messengers had to bring three live lion up to New York from South Carolina, packed in ordinary filmsey wooden packing cases. Before they got anywhere near their destination, they had eaten their way completely through the cases and were all gayly at large in the car. R. D. Etzler, the express messenger, had to prevent them getting more at large than that; had to take them safely to their destination; couldn't injure them; and didn't date even make a row about it. He managed it all; but the broken engagement girl probably wouldn't see anything in this nearly as romantic as riding a horse in a circus!
Whatever or not women voters introduce all the new qualities into politics which have been predicted for them, one thing is certainly true: they do bring optimism! This seems pretty well proven when Mrs. Frank A. Vanderlip invites representative women of both the big parties to meet at her home with the Women's Voters' league for an all day conference on "Governmental efficiency." It may not be too much to expect the republicans and democrats—to say nothing of the non-partisans—to discuss that moot issue.

The first real effort at honest-to-goodness cooperative apartment house ownership will go into effect here in September, when an enthusiastic and thrifty group will move into what used to be four dwellings at 342-349 12:50th-st. The other co-operative undertakings have been largely so in name only, with an enterprising promotor controlling affairs and "taking the responsibility for managing them." These people put up $2000 cash and then pay $50 a month for four light rooms, and never pay anything more all the rest of their lives. Financial control is to be held on an absolutely equal basis, no owner being allowed more than one vote, and with a board of directors elected by

JAILED IN L. A. ON CAR THEFT CHARGE
Sheriff C. E. Jackson has received word from the sheriff's office in Los Angeles that Floyd Baker, 24, said to be wanted at Santa Ana for the theft of a Ford auto belonging to P. L. Hayes, was under arrest and being held in the county jail.
Baker, it was said, told Los Angeles authorities that he lived at the Richilleau hotel in Santa Ana for three weeks and that he drove the car off with Hayes's permission. Baker told officers he was making merchandise deliveries for Hayes.
According to Sheriff Jackson, Baker has passed several checks in Santa Ana which have been returned marked "insufficient funds."
