SEDALIA WILL LURE EX-MISSOURI FOLK "I'm from Missouri—show me!" Hundreds of former residents of this famous state now residing in Orange co and So. Calif. are preparing to return to their heath to attend the Missouri centennial celebration at Sedalia, Mo., August 8-20. A great deal of interest is being manifested by Missourians living in this county and it is said that a number are anticipating being present at the big celebration. Opportunity will be offered for advertising this section and it is believed that it will be accepted. Arrangements are being made for running a special train over the Salt Lake to the exposition city. The special will leave Los Angeles August 9 at 3 a.m. In reply to a query as to details of the plans for the special and other information of the centennial, Chas. E. Stokes, of Los Angeles, representing L. H. Parsons, secretary of the federation of state societies, says: "I desire to ask that in mentioning the excursion, you impress upon your former Missouri readers the fact that they will never have another such opportunity to show their appreciation of the old home state. Also kindly emphasize what this special train will mean to California. "It will probably be the only special outside of Missouri to be run to the centennial, and it will be an advertisement from the start, as we will be written up all along the route. We are promised a great reception at Sedalia. This will put us much in the lintelight. Besides, we are to have a California day with a program." There are a good many leaks in the upkeep of a grove, which may be entirely or partially stopped by judicious management. A brief resume on points of economy which should be practiced by every grower if he is to get the maximum efficiency may be outlined here. 1 — Economy in irrigation. In many of our heavier loam soils excessive quantities of water are being used. By use of the soil augur one can examine the moisture content of the root zone and determine if water is necessary. Oftetimes 60 or 90 day intervals are sufficient, providing proper cultivation is given between applications. 2 — A careful study should be made of ranch horsepower, whether to use the tractor or horse. The tractor has its place in the general orchard routine for heavy work that must be done in a hurry, such as deep plowing in the early spring. There is a good deal of lighter work which may well be performed with the horse more economically. Orchard management companies have been organized in a number of citrus districts that do custom tractor work and horse labor. Where this organization is cooperative the expense of orchard tillage may be kept down to a minimum. The one factor which must not be overlooked on the other hand is that they be done on time. 3 — Fertilizing, heavy judicious yard manure or may be economical point of view. If trees produce 400 by supplying $750 yard manure when ten 100 boxes will expense would be. 4 — Limiting. If and such soils are county, an application will accelerate certain plant food might be termed feature. Be sure to however. Thousands been wasted in a lot time where error. 5 — Pruning alive. The expenses of heavy judicious applications of barnyard manure or organic fertilizers may be economical from a production point of view. If one can make his trees produce 400 boxes to the acre by supplying $75.00 worth of barnyard manure where he has only gotten 100 boxes without manure, such expense would be economical. 4—Limiting. If the soil lacks lime, and such soils are scarce in Orange county, an application of good lime will accelerate the availability of certain plant foods in that soil which might be termed another economical feature. Be sure your soil needs lime however. Thousands of dollars have been wasted in useless applications of lime where no benefits will accrue. 5—Pruning should be conservative. Thinning out and spacing and cutting out all dead wood should be practiced. Heavy pruning and heading back is a practice of the past. This applies to lemons as well as oranges. 6—Pest control. It is false economy to cut down on efficient fumigation. By proper control of insect pests the tree is able to yield a good crop, where otherwise the number of boxes is cut down appreciably. Money spent for good fumigation is an economical expenditure. As a rule arsenical sprays for the control of scale insects have proven expensive, when the kill is taken into consideration and the quality of the fruit. In conclusion, it is economy to increase the productivity of the normal tree by giving it proper fertilization and keeping the pests in control. This may mean a greater cost per acre but a less cost per box. SCALY LEG COMMON POULTRY DISEASE As the observant poultry man goes through his flock, he may at sometime observe that the legs of one or more of his fowls present a peculiar swollen condition and that the outside layer of tissues of the swollen legs appear somewhat roughened or "scaly." If the affection has progressed to any considerable extent, lameness may also be noted. If some of the scales are scraped off the diseased leg and examined under low magnification, some mites which cause the condition may be detected quite readily. The detection of the mite is evidence that the fowl has mange of the legs, which condition is commonly known as scaly leg. The disease is slightly contagious, usually only affecting a few of the flock, but unless especial care be taken in purchasing and caring for fowls it is not at all unusual to find the disease distributed to a number of flocks over a wide area. As a rule the disease does not affect the general health of the infested bird, until it has progressed to the extent that lameness is produced, thus depicting the fowl of the natural facilities for obtaining food and exercise. This disease can be eradicated quite readily without very much trouble, and the treatment is rather simple. A cure in ordinary cases may be affected by brushing off the scales or soaking the affected parts in warm soapy water and then applying an ointment or other effective remedy. There are a number of remedies which may be recommended for the cure of this disease. The following ointment is an effective remedy for the cure of scaly leg: One part of oil of caraway to five parts of white vaseline, which should be rubbed into the leg and foot every few days until the disease has disappeared. Attention is again called to the fact that brushing off the scales and soaking the diseased parts, as previously noted, will aid considerably in bringing about beneficial results.
