NEWS OF FULLERTON URGES SHIPMENT OF FRUIT BY STEAMER George C. Lucas has come with his family to make his home in Fullerton. Mr. Lucas has worked for many years in Florida, the West Indies, and Central America, growing pineapples and citrus fruits, his last employment until April being with the United Fruit company, the largest corporation of its kind in the world, owning its own steamers and plantations of many thousands of acres, and after five years in Costa Rica working for the company he has had to give up the work on account of malarial fever which is always prevalent in the tropics. He has been engaged in growing tropical fruits for 30 years and has just completed the largest pineapple plantation and orange orchard in Central America for his company. The transportation problem confronting the growers of California prompted Mr. Lucas to speak of his experience handling pineapples for shipment from Costa Rica. When this industry was started, serious difficulties were experienced getting the tender fruit to carry safely, but after more than two years experimenting, it was found that the pineapples could be gathered from the fields, thoroughly ripe, yellow, and delicious, and introduced to the conquering about 12 days from the time the fruit is gathered until it is landed on the wharf at New York or Boston. If a most perishable fruit like the pineapple can be transported by sea under a temperature of 147 degrees, the problem confronting the fruit growers of California should not be difficult to solve, in the opinion of Mr. Lucas, without doubt the California fruits can be sent by water to the Atlantic seaboard. Avocadoes are another fruit that will prove a great source of revenue. clerks, Leah Dodson, Francis Shepherd, Ella Culmer, Polling place, at city hall.
