NEWS OF FULLERTON
COST OF BUILDING SLOWLY REDUCED
That the cost of construction on the general run of buildings, particularly on those designed for homes, is moving slowly but steadily downward.
The decline in price of the various kinds of materials employed in the construction of the ordinary dwelling house is rated at about 20 per cent from those prevailing a year ago, averaging the list throut, the figures running from 10 per cent on cement and concrete work to 35 per cent on hardwood noors.
The reduction in labor cost is placed at 12½ per cent, equal to about a dollar a day off the general run.
The price of brick is also a little higher than this time last year, but as a comparatively small amount of this material is used in the construction of homes the effect of this increase in negligible as effecting operations in this line.
According to the information obtained the decline in the cost on the items on which the material men and contractors figure in making up their estimates is about as follows:
Lumber: 20 per cent; labor 12½ per cent; nash and doors: 25 per cent; wiring: 20 per cent; plumbing: 12 per cent; painting: 25 per cent; concrete and cement work: 10 per cent; hardwood floors: 35 per cent; roofing: 12 to 15 per cent; tin and sheet metal work: 10 to 15 per cent; plate glass: 25 per cent; mirror plate: 30 per cent.
As to the items of material which affect the construction of business buildings, structural steel is down about 35 per cent; brick about 10 per cent higher, and plate glass still very high although showing a decline of 25 per cent over last year's figures.
It is said that owing to the unsettled shipping conditions there is a scarcity in the south of what is called No. 1 common lumber, amounting to almost a famine, and a raise in the price of this commodity is considered not unlikely by those who are familiar with the situation.
WOMAN MISSIONARY TO OCCUPY PULPIT
Mrs. Mabel Stipp, a missionary from the Philippine Islands, will occupy the pulpit at the First Christian church of Fullerton Sunday evening, Rev. John T. Houser, pastor, announced this afternoon.
The men's class met in luncheon at the Milk Bottle Cafe yesterday at noon. The meeting will be held in the parlors of the church in the future. They decided to have a patriot-in session each month in the class.

THE JOKE'S ON MONTY
The Fullerton police department has a joke on Monty Jackson, the new marshal. A Mexican left his bone-yard team, and load of hay on a spring wagon in the northern part of town, and Monty went out to take 'em to the city barns on the south side of town, passing right thru town with all, and his billet sticking at his side, and clucking at the team. To see him, no one would have dreamed it to be the marshal, but would have thought him a "country hick from Hicksville."
