County Registers EVERY ALIEN MALE How many alien males are there in Orange-co subject to the new alien poll tax of $107? Guesses vary all the way from 500 to 6000. County Clerk J. M. Backs, now arranging to register the alien males 21 years of age and under 60, believes that there are 3,000 in the county. County Assessor James Sleeper's offhand estimate put the number at 1000, but after a few minutes that he doubled his estimate. The alien poll tax law is now in effect, and under its provisions the duty of registration of every alien male in the county subject to its provisions rests with County Clerk Backs. The responsibility of collecting $10 per alien from each of the men registered rests upon County Assessor Sleeper. Backs has just received his registration supplies, and he is now appointing deputies to receive registrations. Under the law as least one registration deputy must be appointed in each school district. The compensation is 10 cents per registration. Registration this year must be completed by August 1. "The responsibility of seeing that he is registered rests upon the alien" said Backs. "It is much the same as it was in the registration for the draft. The deputy is expected to make a canvass and get in all the names possible. However, should he miss anybody, the alien is responsible for the failure to register. Under the law failure to register is a misdemeanor." The blanks received by Backs resemble the voter's registration blanks in size and arrangement. Each alien registered is to be given a receipt. Any alien who is unable to write his name at the bottom of the certificate must place his thumb print as well as his cross mark upon the line elected for his signature. By far the larger number of registrations in this county will be among Mexicans. The county officers recognize that the Mexicans will be the most troublesome of alien residents of this county to deal with for the reason that many of the Mexicans cannot read or write and will not NEVADA ROUND-UP AT RENO JULY 2-5 More good news for the sport enthusiast and motorist who has his eye fixed on the big Nevada Round-Up at Reno, July 2 to 5 inclusive. Word has just been received from officials who are in charge of the feature 1000-mile road race, stating that sanction has been obtained from the A. A. A. It is also stated that J. A. Nikrent, of Los Angeles, who is remembered as a several time and sensational winner of the Phoenix Road Race, has just put in an appearance at the Nevada metropolis and is already tuning up his Bulck for a trial run over the course. Nikrent expresses great confidence in his ability to cross the finishing line first. In the meantime motorists from all over No. Calif. are getting ready to join the big "motorcade" which is planning to reach Truckee by Thursday, June 30, where the host of private motorists comprising the procession will halt for the night. From thence the automobilists will journey direct to Reno where they will arrive in plenty of time to become adjusted and for the big four-day carnival—in season to witness the finish of the 1000-mile road race, the Wild West Rodeo and the opening of the Reno automobile show. There is plenty of time for all motorists who intend forming a part of the "motorcade" to enter this trek. All automobile owners who wish to take part are advised to send their names to any automobile editor in the bay district; they will then be forwarded to the committee in charge of the event. In the meantime the slogan "Reno or Bust!" is finding a place in the vocabulary of a whole host of No. Calif. auto owners. PORT APPROPRIATION REJECTION FORESEEN Action of conferences on the naval appropriation bill in Washington yesterday eliminating appropriations for submarine base and naval station for Port of Los Angeles was predicted in a letter which J. C. Metzgar, secretary of the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce, received from Congressman Phil Swing. In referring to the reason why he believed the appropriations would be passed over this session, Swing said: "On account of the need of economy, the house seems to be taking the view that all new projects should wait a year or two until we get over present financial depression. This is all the controversy there is at the present time. "I assure you and the good people of Orange county that if these matters do go over, and I believe they will, I will be glad to call the attention of the next committee which visits the coast to the availability of Newport harbor, and have them visit and investigate its possibilities. It now seems likely that nothing will be done along this line this session of Congress." If it's from Wiltman's it’s good!
