PRESBY. S. S. WILL
HAVE PICNIC TUES.
Presbyterian Church News
Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 28, the Presbyterian Sunday school will have its regular annual picnic at the Orange County Park. All desiring to go should be at the church not later than nine A.M. since the last autos to go will leave at that time.
The chairmen of the following committees were appointed by Supt Gibbs:
Transportation, Mr. A. Nagel; children's games, Miss Parker; lemonades, Mr. Hartranft; coffee, Mrs. Renner.
The vacation season is quite noticeable in the attendance, Mrs. Edna Curtis will substitute for Miss Ruth Coons, who is taking a summer school course at Los Angeles, Mrs. Archibald will substitute for Miss Rumsey, who will spend the summer visiting various places.
This evening at 7:30 a joint meeting of the trustees and session has been called to meet at the study. Every member of both bodies is urged to attend as there are some special matters that require prompt attention.
Tomorrow the Presbytery will meet in the Belvidere church, corner Brooklyn and Gage-sts, Los Angeles. At this time it is expected that Dr. T. H. Walker will present his request for dissolution of his relations with the Boyle Heights church; that this will be favorably acted upon; that the call from the local church will then be presented and arrangements be made for his formal installation, is expected. It is expected that Dr. Walker will begin his work here about July 10.
Wednesday evening the regular prayer and conference meeting at 7:30 to which all are cordially invited.
Next Sunday being July 3, Mr. Walker suggests that the patriotic idea be carried out in the services.
The choir gave us two especially beautiful selections at the morning service. The one an anthem in which Mrs. Matter carried the alto obligato, the other a solo by Prof. Thomas Askin.
Dr. Wallace chose James 1:27 as his text: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep in almost untold numbers all over Europe, many of them in destitute circumstances and many suffering from disease.
Everyone should read carefully Mutt. 25. This is the only place where Christ draws aside the veil and shows us a picture of the future judgment. You will see that the reward and punishment depends upon whether the individual has performed his Christian duty or whether he has failed to carry out the commission given him. It all hinges on "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" and vice verksa.
The Christian life is tested or measured by how it works out. Do we do the things Christ would have us do?
Religion is the greatest transforming agency upon earth because it transforms man. The sinner becomes a christian, even tho he may not lose all of his human weaknesses. Religion binds men together to overcome the evil of the world. Christ illustrated this by comforting the sorrow and healing the afflicted as well as supplying the needy.
Religion in its true form, always carries the idea, and desire as well, of personal purity. In the beatitudes we read that "the pure in heart shall see God." This is one of the greatest desires of the true Christian and we find this desire was expressed by Christians of old. You will recall that Christ said those who had seen him had seen the Father. Scripture plainly tells us that Christ is the revelation of God the Father.
All professors of Christ should remember that purity is fundamentally the chief characteristic of the christian. He must guard against his speech, his actions, his desires, his thoughts.
Nothing but complete surrender to Christ will suffice. There should be purity of garments, of mind, of soul, of will. Then we too may say—"Thanks be unto God the Father who gave us the victory."
May this be the keynote of our lives!

Dr. Wallace chose James 1:27 as his text: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."
He said in part: "There is really no set definition in the Bible anywhere of religion, but this definition given by James is the most satisfactory of any that can be given, altho it is not exhaustive but more suggestive. In fact the word religion is found but twice in the Bible.
The dictionary generally defines religion as that which blinds us in our sense of obligation to the Supreme Being. However, Max Mueller declared that no satisfactory definition of religion had ever been made.
James has frequently been called the practical apostle. He stayed in Jerusalem most of the time during his apostleship and seemed to have a faculty of looking at things from a practical viewpoint, which is easily discernable in his writings.
Luther, the great reformer, took very little stock in the hoof of James and would have favored eliminating it from the scriptures. He considered it was not consistent with some of the other writings. Upon close study, however, this is shown untrue. We find there is no contradiction but there is a variance.
Scripture plainly shows us that religion in its true sense does not consist merely of form, and Christ, himself, has warned us against the dangers of formalisms.
In this 27th verse of James we find the essence of religion may be divided into two parts, 1, the practical benevolence or sympathy; 2, personal purity.
James gave a message to all who professed Christ "to visit the fatherless and widows." This message was given at a time of great persecution, of oppression and misery, of distress and perils. Even now we find a parallel to these times. The aftermath of war has left its marks of suffering. There are widows and orphans
LA HABRA SCHOOL DISTRICT IS SUED
The La Habra school district is defendant in a civil action brot in superior court by Edwards, Wildey and Dixon Co. of Los Angeles to collect $1,390.32 alleged to be due the plaintiff.
According to the complaint the defendant entered into an agreement Sept. 24, 1920, with the Pemberton Heating and Ventilating Co. to complete the installation of a heating and ventilating system in the kindergarten and domestic science-bldgs of the La Habra school. The contract price was $3425.
The Pemberton Co., according to the complaint, then entered into a contract with the Edwards, Wildey and Dixon Co. whereby it was to furnish all labor and materials incident to the installation of the hearing and ventilating system.
The plaintiff asserts that demands have been made on the Pemberton Co. for $1,390.32, alleged to be due for the labor and materials, and that none of this amount has been paid. The Los Angeles supply company is now seeking to collect thru the school district, which is held responsible for the original contract.

ADDRESS TO HEARTS SICK UNTO DEATH
At the Methodist White Temple Sunday morning, Dr. J. A. Gelsinger spoke on the text: 1 Cor. 13:13: "Now, abideth faith, hope and love." His theme was "Forward or Backward."
It was an address to "Hearts that are sick unto death" and gave the cure. He said in part:
I ask you to read these words in the form of a question, and make it personal: "Are the faith and love hope in my heart? Have I more faith, more hope, more love in my heart than I had ten, or 20, or 50 years ago?"
It is generally recognized that children are naturally religious. They trust the universe without fear, even as do the birds that sing and wing their way in the blue. And there is by common consent nothing more beautiful than the trustfulness and confidence of the heart of a child. But many people imagine that we go forward in our experiences of life we necessarily lose in these qualities of the heart. There are those who imagine that suspicion is higher than trustfulness and wiser. That selfishness is a safer policy than kindness and sympathy.
But if life leaves in the place of our childhood's love, a sneer, in place of hope, a blank despair, and a crippling fear where once was a seame faith, we may be sure that we have missed our way, or to change the figure: We have been spoiled in the firing process.
I would not sneer at those who have lost their capacity for faith, whose hearts have gone dead. They are not needing to be condemned but to be pitied.
The whole men, the men who have really served the race, have kept the faith of their hearts unimpaired. The instinctive faith of childhood has given way to a rational faith not to doubt and misgiving and despair.
The men who have served the United States in the capacity of the presidency may be taken as illustrations of wholesome lives. Men like Grant and Hayes and Garfield and Lincoln kept their hearts in faith and hope and love.
I lay it down as a proposition instantly commending itself to all of us: Faith, hope and love are the highest capacities of the heart and life! That you are kind that you no longer have hope? No; I am sure that you cannot mean that nor should you try to make yourself mean that.
You can lose these great spiritual capacities but that is the impoverishment of the heart.
My final word, is this: The heart that has suffered this loss may find renewal in the fellowship of Christ. Mark you, I do not say "Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and you will find your faith and hope and love returning." That is just what you cannot do. That would be asking the impossible of the heart that has gone dead. What I do say is this: "Give Christ a chance at your heart and life. Listen to him. Let him speak to you. Open your heart to his word and spirit. And in that walk with Christ you will find your heart warmed and you will find the spiritual tide setting in once more. You have lived under wrong conditions. In the presence of Christ it is easy to accept the universe. To believe in the goodness of God, To learn that man and woman, whatever may be seeming, are worth dying for and that our hearts need not betroubled for beyond death are God; our Father; and our Father's House. Other sick souls have been cured; so may you."
BIG CROWD HEARS BLAKELY PREACH
"Be not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth; the same shall he reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit reap life everlasting," was the text from which Rev. J. N. Blakely, pastor of the Church of the Lord, preached at his home, 511 No. Olive-st, yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. There was a large attendance.
Be not deceived; neither deceive yourselves nor permit yourselves to be deceived by others.
The salvation of the immortal soul saved from sin by faith in Christ and his atoning blood, so as to well pleasing to the father and to have eternal life.
This is one of the most grandest things that can happen to the soul. For this soul is to live some where thru all eternity—in heaven or in the lake of fire.
PREDICT THREE-CENT DROP IN GASOLINE
Will the retail price of gasoline in Anaheim go down to 20c a gallon?
This is a question motorists are asking themselves not infrequently and wherever two meet it is more or less the topic of conversation.
The conversation is based on the statements that Calif., producing companies have not been able to human redemption. That God set forth in his word and his son's atonement and to justify themselves if their deeds try to explain and twist the scriptures to suit themselves. They trust only in the rites and ceremonies of the law of salvation.
He who is a genuine christian, that has been saved from sin, trusts in Christ and his atoning blood, and received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, in a definite second work of grace, shall reap life everlasting.

I lay it down as a proposition, instantly commending itself to all of us: Faith, hope and love are the highest capacities of the heart and are regulative of all life. Let a man lose out here and he loses out altogether. The man who can trust the universe, who has faith in God and his goodness and not a supreme suspicion gnawing away at his heart; the man who has not contempt but sympathy and good-will for his fellows; the man who faces the future with the conviction that the future of the soul is largeness and liberty and light, this is the man who will be useful among his fellows and who will give the inspiration that makes human fellowship the great boon it is.
But, it has already been indicated that it is possible for a man to lose these powers as he goes forward in life. Indeed unless he takes every precaution he will certainly suffer just this loss. How many have; In such a company as this, even, it is doubtless true that there are those who have lost the believing heart, who are without God and without hope, who experience no outreach of sympathy towards their fellows. Friends, think of the thousands and hundreds of thousands of persons in America who have come to such a sorry experience. Even many of those who have believed have often fallen away. Many a heart once warm with human sympathy has become embittered.
We have a racy way of speaking of our skepticisms but that is only a clever manner of concealing our plight and draping our poverty. You are here this morning and you tell me that you have lost your faith in God that made the world radiant. And then do you mean to tell me that you are by that much better off?
Do you mean to say that the loss of your early enthusiasm for life and your joy in the fellowship of your kind has gone but to greater your

God has decreed that nothing unholy shall enter his heaven, for he is holy and without it no man can see the Lord, Heb. 12.14. Nothing that maketh a lie. Rev. 21.277. Carnality is this element. It is not subject to the law of God. Rom. 8.6-7.
A person cannot halt between two opinions and gain eternal life, and refuse God's holiness and make heaven. This is an impossibility. God demands it and decreed it from the beginning. You may say you do not believe it. Your belief does not change God's decree.
God it not mocked. You cannot deceive him and he will not permit you to mock him. To imitate, in contempt for his word; disregard his word and set up your own standard of salvation; in preference to his plan of redemption, that he has set forth.
You are not deceiving God nor man, but yourselves. Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap. What kind of grain is sowen in the field that shall he reap. So with a soul. If they sow to the flesh and the devil or the world, that shall he reap; but if he has sown to the spirit of that shall he reap life everlasting.
Very 8. He that soweth to the flesh indulges in his sensual and animal appetites, shall have corruption as the crop. You can't lead a bad life and go to heaven at last, according as your present life is, so shall be your eternal life. Job 4.8.
Sowing means transactions of a man's natural life. The reaping signifies the enjoyment or the punishment in the other world.
The true follower of Jesus Christ is separated from all this world, and following the Holy Ghost led of the Spirit, these are the sons of God. Rom. 8.14, Isa. 48.17.

It is said that the cut of two
cents a few weeks ago was made for
the purpose of forcing the foreign
concerns out of the field. This having failed, it is now predicted that
another cut, of at least three cents,
will be announced in the near future.
"It would not surprise me to see
another drop in gasoline prices, and
that close to three cents a gallon," declared a service station owner today.
Should this be done the retail
price here would be 22½ cents per

concerns from the field.
Increased output of crude oil in California fields has resulted in large stocks of gasoline being accumulated, it is said.
