New York Letter by Lucinda Price NEW YORK, June 23. Greenwich Village, accused of being unlawful as well as artistic has ceased defending itself on the side of what it doesn't do and is putting forth its claims to merit on the side of positive achievement. "They say we are just 'near-artists' and 'hobohemians' do they?" choruses the Washington and Sheridan Square section of Manhattan. "Well, what do they make of this? Here's a list of just a few of the writers who have lived and worked among us and of us in the last few years. Where do the smug precincts of the upper half of this island get anybody to stack against them? Eda St. Vincent Millay, Floyd Dell, Sinclair Lewis, Susan Claspell, Mary Heaton Vorse, Eugene Olnell — the most successful playwright in the country, this season — Theodore Dreiser, Nina Wilcox Putnam — and dozens of others. Come on, you objectors, tell us who the "real" artists are who scorn connection with our Village?" Young Theodore Roosevelt and Douglas Robinson have sought to solve the problem of those members of the Art Students League who can't afford private exhibitions of their work, to display it on the walls of their new coffee house, free of charge. The invitation has been accepted. Rockaway Point is one suburb which is run on an efficient plan. What one loses in time by commuting to and from there, he makes up in general economy of space and occasion once he gets there. For instance: the chief butcher shop is also the chief cabaret. Once the day's orders of lamb chops and sirloins are filled, the plano is pushed out from behind the icebox, the musicians are assembled and the merry whirl is on. The sawdust of the butcher shop floor is perfectly good saw dust for the dance hall floor. Nothing is wasted in Rockaway. Great interest is being displayed this year in Columbia University's prize awards, announced at its commencement exercises. To Edith Whar. Great interest is being displayed this year in Columbia University's prize awards, announced at its commencement exercises. To Edith Wharton goes the $1,000 Pulitzer Prize for her novel "The Age of Innocence" as "the American novel published during the year which has best presented the wholesome atmosphere of American life and the highest standard of American manners and manhood." General satisfaction has been expressed over the award, for Mrs. Wharton's book has not only been hailed by the critics as among the best novels of the twentieth century, but it has also enjoyed the widest popularity throughout the country as one of the best sellers ever since publication. The Pulitzer prize of $1,000 "for the best American original play, performed in New York which shall best represent the educational value and power of the state, in raising the standard of good morals, good taste and good manners," was awarded to Miss Lulu Bett, by Zona Gale. This play is a dramatization of Miss Gale's novel of the same name which has made such a stir and started a whole new school of American-life fiction. There's something refreshing about an expression of good red-blooded wrath and an inclination to direct action on the part of a supposedly judicial minded occupant of the judge's bench. The other day, two pert young men amused themselves on the subway train by sticking their feet in the door so that it wouldn't close. The mechanism is such that the train can't start until the doors are closed. They were taken before Judge Jesse Silberman. As he fined them $25 each he said, "If I had been on that car I would have broken your heads." There may not be very many horses left on Manhattan Island but there are some remarkably well trained ones, at any rate. They make up in education what they lack in numbers. In consequence a rider needs a strong hand and a firm seat to ride the hired horses of a big local riding academy when he attempts to go more than an hour's distance from the stricle. The rates are $5 for two hours and the horses have learned to judge the distance so as to go an hour's out and one hour back, and if the rider cares to go further he has something of a fight on his hands. "I get so many inexperienced riders," explains the manager, "and they have little sense of direction or of time, and if it were not for the A salad is like a piece of music; every part should be harmonious with every other part." "I get so many inexperienced riders," explains the manager, "and they have little sense of direction or of time," and if it were not for the good sense of the horses, the riders would realize too late that they were beyond their time limit and come thundering in with winded horses. These horses manage the ride themselves, and the riders have little to do with it. In that way, the protect the riders, themselves, and me." There would seem to be an ironic quip to poetic justice in the drive carried on by the Soldiers of Foreign Wars to assist needy exservice men. For they have named it "Red Tape Week" and are raising money my selling strips of actual red tape at $1 a foot. Two hundred thousand feet sold at that price is their aim. Anglish needlework of the time of Charles L is on exhibition at the Dawson Galleries. Many a famous lady worked industriously at her embroidery during that period and the results of her work are truly marvelous to us of this generation—or age. The numbers of different kinds of stitches are multitudinous and it was not uncommon to crowd so many of them into an inch of space that it was not uncommon to chow so many stitches into a square inch of space that it takes a magnifying glass to distinguish them all. Purses, carpets, bags, and all sorts of things are in the collection, among them a pair of white satin sleeves embroidered in gold by Queen Anne. BREA NEWS BREA. The Village Gossip Hoes, rakes, shovels and other implements of assault against weeds and trash were substituted for paint brushes in the hands of artists at Laguna Saturday, when about sixty members of the art colony there waged war on the unsightly vegetation on the five-acre tract to be used in the proposed staging of the Peace Pipe pageant to be held there August 15 to 21 inclusive. Isaac Jenkinson Frazee, who is to direct the pageant, was among those who grasped a hoe and waded into the work. The ground selected is a natural setting for the big production. It is said that the seats will be arranged on an eminence where the spectators will have full view of the production. Seattle accommodations will be provided for 3000 persons. Reaching the highest points on his yearly travels northward today old Sol will apparently pave for a brief rest before resuming his journey and retracing his steps southward. For today marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year for the northern hemisphere, and in direct contradiction, the shortest in the southern where what passes for winter is now in progress. Following the vernal equinox on March 20, the sun appears to take a steady march northward and the days increase in length until this date when the sun lies directly over the tropic of cancer and the latitude of 23% degrees (approximately) is constantly illuminated for a period of a few days. This year, Nature with her usual contradictions, sends a full moon on the shortest nights of the year, just at the time that romantic lovers of moonlight have the least time to enjoy it. After a brief period of rest when for two or three days there will be little difference in the hour at which the sun rises, the swing southward will begin and the days for this hemisphere will shorten as the days of the southern hemisphere lengthen, and when December 22 arrives it will bring the winter solstice and the shortest day of the year, with the long, long nights of the winter season. Inquire In anticipation of getting into real gold production three weeks after their arrival at the mine, several Santa Ana members of the Kelley Mining company, owning a gold mine near Quincy, Calif., were making preparations today for leaving for the mine within the next day or two. Among those who are directing plans for going to the mine are H. H. Kelly, T. P. Kingrey, Roy Hall, L. Crashter and Mr. McCarter. It is said these men will enter actively into the work of developing ore. The company last year spent $10,000 in development and improvement work and it is expected that within three weeks after the Santa Anas arrive at the mills they will be experiencing the sensation of "brickling" real gold and getting cash returns on their investment and labor. Tests of ore produced last summer showed values varying from $2 to $500 a ton, with the average about $52 to the ton. The mine is located in the mountains where heavy snows make it impossible to operate in the winter months. 31 NEW WELLS STARTED Oil field operations reported the week ending June 18 show 31 new wells started, compared with 27 the previous week; total new wells this year 728 compared with 425 same date last year.
