AMAL. RE-CEMENTS FOWLER No. 1 WELL Huntington Beach The Amalgamated Oil Co. has re-mented Fowler No. 1 in the hope of getting a shut-off at 3181 with six-inch. At this well drilling was done by daylight only in order to watch the formation with the closest attention. Fowler No. 2 spudded in and is drilling at 600 feet. Huntington 1-A is flowing by heads and will probably settle down to a 400-barrel well. Huntington 2-A is drilling at 2600 in shale. Pearce No. 1 shows 2950 feet of hole and Huntington No. 3 stands cemented. The Argonaut Oil Co. after a second cementing is balling its Turley No. 1 to bring in. The water appears to have been shut off, but the sand seems to be holding up the oil and prevents the well from starting off flowing as expected. After drilling a 120 feet deeper the Boisa Chica Oil Co.'s No. 1 failed to come in as expected last week. Balling showed that the well had lots of oil but not sufficient gas to maintain the column so the flow would be continuous. An attempt to raise the eight-inch carrying the screen pipe resulted in the pipe parting. It is the intention now to get the eight-inch together and test out for production a little higher up. In event the test is not successful the well will go deeper. The Edens Syndicate well is now on production. While nothing settled can yet be obtained on the output it looks like a 350 of 400-barrel well. It was completed at 2339. Sand is still giving some trouble. The production is carrying some water, but this is expected to diminish as the well clears up. At 2200 feet the Gypsy Syndicate crunch the oil and pulled back to 2195 and cemented the 10 inch. At Huntington Central No. 1 the six-inch is being pulled and the well will be drilled deeper. The production dropped recently from 350 to 60 barrels and for this reason it was believed that a deeper well would produce better. 900 feet, and No. 5 is rigging up. At Huntington Central No. 1 the six-inch is being pulled and the well will be drilled deeper. The production dropped recently from 350 to 60 barrels and for this reason it was believed that a deeper well would produce better. The Hurst Oil Co. seems to be having a little difficulty in getting No. 1 back on production. A week's waibing has failed to make the well flow again. Cemented for bottom water the well was shut down three weeks. Hurst No. 2 is a rig, and No. 3 has lumber on the ground. The brown shale struck in the Miller Syndicate well at 2400 continues at 3000, the present depth and the well is looking extremely good. The Moser Special No. 1 has the making of a nice well. Drilled to 3230 the well went on production last week. At times it produces at the rate of 50,000 and 600 barrels. High pressure gas is working on the oil and impedes the production. Not until a gas trap is installed will the gas pressure be relieved and the well given a chance to show what it can do. It has all the carmarks of a 500 barrel well. The sand has been washed out of the Pantages-Huntington No. 1 and the well is on production again. It is doing about 375 barrels. The oil is carrying some emulsion, which is expected to clear up as soon as the water used in washing out is removed. Absolutely free from water and flowing a 23 gravity product the Republic Petroleum's No. 1 is one of the best wells in the Huntington Beach field. Drilled to 3685, completed without a mishap the well started off flowing from 500 to 809 barrels. Thru a wrong impression this well was reported last week a 250-barrel pumper. The fact of the matter is the well has never been on the pump and from the way it is producing now it will be a long time before it will be necessary to put a rod in it. The Standard Oil Co. with 23 wells drilling is the busiest company in the Huntington Beach district. On the Huntington lease A-5 stands cemented at 2970, A-7 at 2790 is fishing, A-9 at 2535 is testing water, A-10 is drilling at 2745, A-11 stands cemented at 2200, A-12 is drilling at 1350, A-13 is a rig, and A-14 is setting boilers. Torrance No. 1 drilled deeper is now at 4104 feet. One of the wisest and probably the most important move the Sun Oil Co. has made since it entered the Huntington Beach field is the recent selection of L. W. Courtney for its field manager. Courtney is an oil man who knows the oil business from first to finish. Schoolled by the Union Oil Co. 15 years ago Courtney made an enviable record on the Graham-Loftus at Brea. Later he went to Oklahoma for the U.S. government, and just recently he returned from Borneo. Courtney will make Sun Oil Co.'s No:1 is holding right up to the 400-barrel mark. No. 2 is being bailed down to bring in at 2900 feet. An 800-barrel well is predicted for No. 2 on the Grant lease. Permission has been granted the Texas Holding Co. to proceed. The 10-inch is to be set at 3050 and the drilling resumed at 3290. It will only be a matter of a short time until this well is on production. At Copeland No. 1 the Union Oil Co. has been conducting an exhaustive search for salt water, and the well has been re-cemented. The dairy department of the Orange County Farm Bureau arranged a very interesting program which was carried out following lunch. Mr. F. D. Plavan, county dairyman and vice chairman of the dairy department, got as chairman of the meeting and introduced Mr. L. H. Moulton, So. Calif., representative for Calif. Dairy Council, who gave a very impressive talk on the "Improvement of Dairymen's Business." He stated that the important problem for the producer now was to become an individual salesman and help create a demand by advertising his product at all times. W. M. Belding, president of the Orang-co Farm Bureau, outlined the general organization of the farm bureau and the dairyman's relation. He urged that every stockman should be affiliated with the other farmers of the county, state and nation in this big movement. The cowtesting association as now formed has been functioning since last September, with J. W. Soden as cowtester. Mr. Soden made a few remarks as to the progress of the association, citing some of the visible accomplishments of the organization during the past nine months. Assistant Farm Advisor J. R. Waters who has been working with the county dairymen, explained state and county dairy cow competitions. In the state contest Mr. H. L. Wakeham's herd being the only one from this county entered, is making a fine showing. The months of April and May having the highest individual producing cow in the state. May closed the fourth month of county competition and Waters gave out the prizes to herd owners winning in various classes for last month. In the absence of T. H. Brice, secretary-manager Calif. Milk Producers Assn., D. H. Goodwin, ex-dairyman from Los Angeles county, a man vitally interested in marketing problems confronting the producer. He stated it was a sure thing there would be no reduction in wholesale convenience to make a slit through the skin at the point of puncture. Then take the instrument and with the point directed toward the right elbow give the instrument a sharp blow with the palm of the hand. The trochar is then withdrawn from the sheath or tube through which to gases escape. The operation may be repeated if gases accumulate again. Cypress News Items CYPRESS AND HANSEN, June 22—Mrs. John Sconse, who has been critically ill at her home in Cypress in improving slightly, Mrs. Sconse suffered a severe relapse about 10 days ago. Dr. Beebe, who has the case in charge, expects the patient to regain strength and her normal health within a short time. Hallie Holliser, who has been very ill, is slightly improved. The Pridy family is the intent family to be taken with the prevailing epidemic that has caused so much suffering throughout the neighborhood. Some doctors claim it to be the "flu," others call it just "plain old in gripe." Those who have been afflicted claim it to be very disagreeable, whatever name it may be called. The oil excitement here has not abated. The Midway test well just east of town is down some 1600 feet and drilling in blue shale. The Standard and Fullerton oil companies are very active in land leasing. The Standard is paying $10 per acre bonus and $1 per month rental. The Fullerton company has offered $25 per acre bonus and $1 rental. The Standard has several hundred acres signed up. Wirman, Eyesight Specialist. MUST MAKE LIVING ON FARM PLEASANT The competition of industry requires that we make farm life as pleasant as we can. The farmer is in competition with other industries for his labor. There are many advantages offered by the farm and some disadvantages. With a few improvements the disadvantages can be largely done away with and the farmer can offer really a more attractive field for labor than many of the other industries. Modern farm life requires modern improvements. A new era is at hand, and the old hard way of doing things must pass away. The auto and good roads have largely solved farm transportation, but there are many other important items that demand our attention. A water system for the house and farm buildings, good light, heat and ventilation are rapidly coming to make life on the farm more pleasant. The telephone, rural delivery and parcel post furnish quick and efficient service; and each year brings new comforts and conveniences to the rural dweller. The farmer's wife is fortunate in saving a few long-needed improvements made about the house. A power washing machine and a hot and cold water system in both bathroom and kitchen are within the reach of most farmers. Various machines can be run easily where electricity is available, and electricity is coming to the farm rapidly, making the work for the womenfolk much more agreeable. Our farm building program has been delayed, and we have been slow to make certain important improvements, especially about the barns. With the high cost of building material and labor and recently the difficulty of securing money, building on the farm has practically ceased. We are therefore now much in need of improved buildings and equipment; and the time has come when we It doubtless has been a long time ago since some of us experienced the excitement created in our neighborhood when the family cow ate excessively of moist green leguminous plants; such as alfalfa, clover, vetches, etc., during the growing season when the plants contain much water and are fine in texture. Other plants may cause such a disturbance, but the leguminous are the most dangerous in this respect. After partaking of the succulent food, it was noted that the animal became markedly swollen most noticeably on the left side in the region of the flank and her appearance suggested to one not familial with the condition produced that she must have eaten an inflated balloon. In seeking the cause of the condition the experienced observer informed you that she was bloated with gas produced in the large compartment of her stomach and that it would be necessary to puncture the stomach in the region of the swelling to permit the gas to escape. The swollen condition in cases of this kind is referred to in some parts of the country as "hoven" but the Calif. dept. of agriculture finds it is popularly designated as bloat. The disease in such cases is caused by the gases produced from the fermentation of green food in the stomach. In mild cases of bloat it is not necessary to puncture the stomach as the administration of medicines that absorb the gases and allay fermentation suffice to bring about a normal condition. Kneading and massaging the left flank for ten or 15 minutes frequently terminates mild cases of bloat. In cases where the bloated animal is in distress from the pressure produced on the internal organs, a puncture should be made immediately in order in many cases to save the animal's life. The puncturing is done with more assurance of safety by use of an instrument known as a "trochar" consisting of a short, sharply-pointed rod enclosed in a sheath which permits only the point of the rod to enter. The Westminster Oil Co.'s well stands cemented at 3000 feet. An exceptionally good hole was drilled, the pipe was set without the least difficulty, and everything is in readiness to go ahead with drilling. Dr. W. J. Lawrie, dentist now located, Suite 210-12, Bever-Wilson Hill, 148 W. Center, Anaheim. NOW IN THE NEW SAVAGAGE THE IDEAL IT EXPRESSES: When the decision was made to manufacture a tire the type and quality of tire to be produced was wise decided upon. The result of an exhaustive investigation showed that the motoring public did not receive a full return their normal investment in tires, or in other words, motoring public failed to obtain mileage and service proportion to their investment and in proportion to cost of producing the average cord tire. We were further impressed with the growing need tire of unquestionable quality, a tire into which was incorporated the most desirable of the latter day attaining and features that would render the purchaser mileage service in direct proportion to his investment.
