NEWS OF FULLERTON HOTEL PETITION IS PRESENTED COUNCIL The committee of 10 of the Fullerton board of trade last night presented a petition to Fullerton trustees asking the city to sell at a reasonable sum half of the city property on No. Spadra-rd, between Wilshire and Whiting-aves., for hotel purposes only. The committee recommended that the price should not exceed $150 a front foot, and that a more reasonable figure would be $100 a front foot. Mr. Krause, president of the B. of T. and chairman of the committee, in presenting the petition, stated that about 500 signatures had already been obtained, and that no opposition to speak of had been encountered. Rev. John T. Houser, pastor of the First Christian church, and member of the committee, stated there were five reasons why the board of trustees should grant the petition—because it is the desire of 95 per cent of the citizens that it be done, because the $25,000 challenge specifies this location and if turned down it may mean the loss of the hotel plans entirely, because it will encourage investment in the city, because a hotel is Fullerton's greatest need and its absence Fullerton's greatest alfame, and because it is a financial asset to the city which would enhance every foot of ground in the city. Rev. Houser said. J. L. Lyons told how Payette, Ida., in the same boat with Fullerton, obtained a hotel, and shook the Masons loose from a corner lot which the Masonic lodge gave up out of civic pride. Edward K. Benchley, president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank, declared it is not a grafting proposition, but one in which every citizen of Fullerton may invest every cent he has. Mr. Benchley further declared that he would sell for 90 cents on the dollar every bit of stock he SANTA ANA SPANISH CLUB IN PROGRAM At 5 p.m. Friday, June 3, at the Fullerton H. The young trees should be protected against sunburn by either shade of whitewash. Todate, there are no pests of enough importance to cause trouble therefore no protection is needed. Cultivation is optional. Basin and mulch young trees at least for the first two years, keep soil damp, not wet. When the leaves turn brown, around the edges and ends, it is a notice that at some time you allowed the trees to go too long between irrigations. There are many large avocado trees scattered through the country, nearly all of which are of Mexican thin-skinned varieties or seedlings. The greater number of these trees are poor fruiters and should be top-worked to better varieties. STATES EXHIBITOR (Continued from page 1) Ten days, the fruit is not yet at its best and should be left longer on the tree. Never place an avocado in the icebox to soften it as it will no develop the finest flavor. Place the fruit where it will be as little affected by change of temperature as possible. When as soft as a mellow peach cut in half with a sharp knife, test the fruit with the back of a table knife; if ripe, it will cut as freely as butter. Should you have cut the fruit too soon, join the two halves and wrap with a cloth and lay away again, a day or two longer. When in proper condition, cut in quarters, slice the flesh with the back of a silver knife, cutting both lengthwise and crosswise; then run the back of the knife between the flesh and the skin when the flesh will easily slide off the skin onto the plate. First learn to appreciate the avocado with nothing but salt; later, add what your taste desires, but never use an oil dressing on avocado. It is nearly one third oil already. Diced avocados added to soup at the time of serving are considered good. A Spanish salad is made as follows: A pound of avocado with three hard-boiled eggs, run thru the ricer; avocado, white and yolk separately. To avocado add a little sharp sauce and salt to all.
