GRAMMAR SCHOOL
HAS LAWN FESTIVAL
LA HABRA. May 24—Much to the disappointment of the patrons of the grammar school, the lawn festival, scheduled for Friday night, owing to the rain was postponed until Monday.
The school exhibit was held and proved a delight to the ones that braved the spring showers. Each room was beautifully decorated and the work of the pupils showed much painting care. The art exhibit was especially good from the artistic hand-painted water color programs to the free-hand drawing by the three upper classes.
The sixth grade relief maps and the domestic science work was worthy of note.
The manual training has done some very creditable work, done under the tutelage of Professor Hosack.
Miss Clara Brown, kindergarten teacher, showed some very good clay modeling.
The flower decorations of the grade rooms were very artistic.
The eighth grade room had a few extra touches: blue and gold being the graduating colors, the pupils used a profusion of yellow, and blue flowers with crepe paper for streamers. The free-hand drawing of this class was well done. The teachers instrumental in having this work so well done are: Mrs Clara Brown, kindergarten; color scheme for decorating green and white; Miss Mildred Moody, first grade colors; lavender and white; Miss Ruby Daggett, second grade colors; white daisies and Cocil Brunner roses; Miss Mildred Anderson, third, pink and green; Miss Theretta Taylor, fourth yellow and green; Miss Mable Hodson, fifth, American Beauty roses and ferns; Miss Ruby Johnson, sixth, yellow and green; Miss Irene Catlin, seventh, pink roses and fern; Miss Alta Candela, eighth, blue and gold.
La Habra boasts of the finest school in the county, and with the good work of the pupils can back her pretentions, it is said.
Delightful Surprise
Miss Ruby Daggett was the recipient of a delightful surprise on Wednesday evening, when about $20 of her friends and co-workers descended on Wellington came before the board regarding agreement with the Yorba Intraligation Co. Agreement read and revised to meet the approval of the directors of both companies and President and Secretary authorized to sign this agreement when properly executed by the officers of the Yorba Intraligation Co.
Oil reports from the Amalgamated St. Helen's Petroleum and the Hurley-Smith Oil companies read and filed.
Following transfers of stock were granted upon condition that same were properly located: 6 shares Hibernian Savings Bank, pledged for A. D. and Julia Carpenter to A. D. and Julia Carpenter; 6 shares Russell Annn to be divided 2 shares to A. D. Moody; 3 shares Placentia Orange Growers' Association, one share to R. C. Annnin, John R. Gardiner and L. M. Gardiner presented surety bond for certificate of stock for five shares in the name of Alex Gardiner destroyed or lost. 10 shares of Alex Gardiner to be divided, 5 shares to L. M. Gardiner and 5 shares to J. R. Gardiner. This to be according to the degree of settlement and final distribution of the estate of Alex Gardiner, deceased.
Communication read from Bureau of Tests and Inspection regarding the testing of our cement. This was referred to the superintendent.
Request of Mrs. Calkins for company to abandon right of way on So. Lemon-st, referred to the ditch committee.
Mr. Summers of the Public Utilities committee of the Orange-co. Farm Bureau came before the board requesting donation toward power investigation. Company subscribed $150.00.

HAS GOOD SHOWING
There was considerable excitement in Santa Ana today over the announcement that Long Beach Consolidated had struck good oil sand at its well on the Irvine lease. Newport heights section of the Costa Mesa district.
A good flow of oil was said to have been found at 2710 feet and with the gas pressure in good condition indications were declared to be such that a paying well might be brought in at any time. Eight inch piping has been used in drilling the well all the way down to the oil sand and since the Long Beach Consolidated has succeeded in securing a shut-off of water difficulties that have prevented bringing in other wells are not anticipated in this respect.
The success of the Consolidated involves the interest in a number of other wells in the section and people in the community are predicting a new oil boom for Orange-co.
Interstate struck oil sand some time ago at its well known as the Mesa No. 1, not far from the Consolidated well, at a depth of 2500 feet, but has been unable to bring in the well because of inability so far to get a shut-off of water. The same is the case with the Norris well, where a good showing of oil was found at a depth of 2200.
Oil sand also is reported to have been found in the well known as the Mystery, but for some time no work has been done on the well.
The Consolidated struck asphaltum, in drilling its well, at a depth of 300 feet and it is stated that it is considered possible to mine it in paying quantities at that depth.
There is said to be a stratum of asphaltum underneath nearly all the land in the vicinity, but in the flats, where drilling has been attempted in the past, it has been found nearer than a depth of about 1000 feet.
WOMAN ON TRIAL FOR MURDER
LOS ANGELES, May 24.—Placed on trial as the slayer of Clarence Hogan, her sweetheart, Mrs. Marie Bailey, 21, faced a jury in Judge J. P. Wood's court today and began a fight to establish that her shooting of the slain man was an accident and not "premeditated by the woman scorned."
In opening the case against the young woman, Deputy District Attorney C. W. Fricke was expected to make a determined effort to show that she had planned to shoot her sweetheart three days previous to the tragedy and that it was because she believed his love for her had cooled.

STORAGE BATTERIES REQUIRE A DRINK
"Storage batteries should be inspected at least twice a month to determine whether the electrolyte is above the plates," states members of the Automotive Electrical Co., USL service station representative for this section, in urging motorists to educate themselves in the care of their batteries. "It may be necessary to examine offender to make sure that the plates are covered, particularly in hot weather, since head expedites the vaporation of the water."
"The greatest care must be exercised in making this inspection," he continued. "If it is necessary to use a light, use an electric lamp but under no circumstances use a match or a candle or any other open flame. The battery contains gases which on coming in contact with an open flame. The battery contains gases which on coming in contact with an open flame may cause a serious explosion."
"Water will evaporate from the electrolyte during the normal course of battery operation. The surface of the fluid should not less than half an inch above the plate tops. If less, enough distilled water should be added to bring it up to the required level. Well water, spring water, faucet water or water from an ordinally stream never should be used as it contains impurities which will damage the battery."
INJURED WOMAN ASKS $7,500 FOR DAMAGES
Following closely the trial of a civil suit brought by H. E. Sleeper of Long Beach against the Balbon Land and Water Co., in which he was awarded $3,700 damages by a jury, a second action brought against the defendant company by Mrs. Alverata Sleeper, wife of the first plaintiff, was tried by a jury in Department No. 2 of the superior court Monday.
Mrs. Sleeper has brought suit for $7,500 damages, alleging that she is permanently injured and that she has suffered great bodily pain and mental anguish at the time.
TRIES TO HURL BALL AND CHAIN, CHARGE
Reprimanded because he was apprehended loafing on the job, Fernandez Rivas, Mexican prisoner, who is working on the chain gang in Orange-co park, picked up the iron ball to which he was chained and threw it at Deputy Sheriff J. H. Deck, who had charge of the prisoners.
The chain was not long enough to permit the ball to reach Deck and when it straightened with the momentum of the ball Rivas had both his feet jerked from under him. He picked himself up and then attempted to engage Deck and Deputy C. M. Wood in a fight.
That happened April 28 last. Rivas was serving thirty days on a vagrancy charge at the time. As soon as his term expired Deck and Wood filled a complaint against him charging battery.
Rivals was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Cox Saturday and his trial set for May 24.
SEAL BEACH PLANS TO DRILL FOR OIL
At a large and enthusiastic meeting at Seal Beach to organize an oil company for the purpose of development within the city limits of Seal Beach, plans were made to this end. The meeting was called to order by R. J. Flann, who had been previously chosen temporary chairman. William Templeman acted as secretary.
Preliminary steps toward organization were taken and the following were named as a board of directors: Jamie Graham, Rachard H. Rogers, J. B. Dixon, William Templeman, George H. Morrison, Mark Kirby, R. I. Finn, Henry Hinch, and Frank A. Bartnett.
Mr. Templeman told the purpose of the meeting and said that assurance has been given of leases on 58 lots, and that oil will be found at a depth of from $000 to 3,500 feet.

Mrs. Sleeper has brought suit for $7,500 damages, alleging that she is permanently injured and that she has suffered great bodily pain and mental anguish as the result of alleged carelessness on the part of the defendant company.
