ASSERT S. A. DEALERS WON'T CUT PRICES The Merchants and Manufacturers associations of Santa Ana and Orange are criticised for asserted failure to offer better cooperation with the committee and certain lines of business endeavor are specifically mentioned as not having reduced prices in proportion to the general decline in wholesale costs and wages. In a report that was today in the hands of the Orange County Fruit Exchange. The report is by the committee appointed some months ago to investigate living costs in the south half of the county. The committee is composed of D. F. Campbell, Willard Smith, E. B. Collier and L. D. Palmer, and following its report to the directors it was continued in order that it might make additional investigations along certain lines. The report was approved by the board. The committee says it finds that most retailers of clothing and food products have reduced prices in keeping with lower wholesale costs. Restaurants, soda fountains, garages and barber shops are declared to be lines that have not made reductions, which, in the opinion of the committee, are warranted. The report in full follows: To the Board of Directors, Orange County Fruit Exchange: "We, the undersigned committee, appointed by the board of directors of the Orange County Fruit Exchange, beg to report that we have investigated the living costs in this district quite extensively and it is our opinion that wholesale costs have been reduced materially in most lines, food stuffs and clothing in particular. We believe the retailers in these lines, generally, are now working on a reasonably close margin. We also believe, however, that there are exceptions to this rule. Therefore, we would strongly urge our growers, and all employees of the citrus industry to compare prices carefully as between stores before making purchases, and feel that by so doing a saving can be effected, and living costs decidedly reduced. It will also have the effect of giving the retailer who is endowing to them to appoint a committee from those bodies to cooperate with your committee on this question, but we regret to say that this was not done, and we feel that the proper cooperation was not shown us, by them. A matter of this kind is a very difficult thing to handle, unless the proper spirit of cooperation is shown by all business men who are interested in the welfare of the community. "We feel, however, that some good has been accomplished, but not to the extent that we had hoped for, or that could have been accomplished with more united support of the merchants' associations. "We would recommend that this committee be continued for additional investigation along certain lines, after which time, if the board of directors deems it advisable, we can avail ourselves of the facilities that we have in our organization, to remedy certain conditions that we have not as yet been able to overcome." CHARGES MATE IS BIGAMIST Hoy Roy E. Peasley, charged with bigamy and grand larceny, was alleged to have left his wife and six-months' old son, Harold, destitute at their home at Balboa Beach last Thursday and to have gone to Los Angeles and married Agnes Murray, 29, a Long Beach bookkeeper, was revealed here following the receipt of dispatches from Long Beach. Peasley was arrested in the Yosemite valley. Advices from Long Beach were to the effect that Peasley had until recently been employed as a mechanic in a garage there. C. L. Lancaster and Norman Kent, owners of the garage, swore to the grand larceny complaint, charging that the defendant had been carrying on a systematic theft of tires and tools from the garage for severay weeks. Peasley's wife, Mrs. Irene Peasley, is now staying with friends in Long. SEEK TO GAMES Baseball game at Newport Beach presented to the been acted up board. It will also have the effect of giving the retailer, who is endeavoring to follow the general decline in wholesale prices, and prices his goods accordingly, the support he is entitled to, and at the same time force the petty profiteer to get in line to go out of business. "It is our opinion, however, that there are several lines of business, a large percentage of which have not endeavored to meet existing conditions. We refer particularly to restaurants, soda fountains, garages and barber shops. In case of restaurants and soda fountains the costs of supplies have certainly been very much reduced, and it seems to us that they have not, generally, reduced their prices accordingly. There has been practically no effort on the part of garage and barber shop owners to reduce prices in line with general reductions in labor costs and supplies. At various times injuries have been suffered by persons on the sands where ball was being played. Also, a number of windows have been broken. However, features of the ordinance were so drastic that ball alone would not be regulated, but practically all sports on the beach, until it would be a misdemeanor to indulge in very much of anything except swimming. The measure was returned to city attorney, Clyde Bishop, with instructions to frame a new ordinance that would not be quite so extreme. The ordinance calling a special election for the voting of bonds for a pier on the ocean, a pier on the bay and the dredging of a turning basin were read for the first time and passed to the second reading, which will be next Monday evening. This ordinance provides for the calling of an election June 7 to vote bonds in the aggregate of $40,000 for these proposed improvements, which have been petitioned for by residents living in the Balboa tract. Beach. It was she who brought the charge of bigamy. The ceremony uniting Peasley and Miss Murray was said to have been performed by the Rev. COUNTY OFFICIALS WILL PICNIC Orange-co., officials and employees are anticipating with much gusto the approach of Saturday, May 21, when they will hold their third annual picnic at Orange-co., park. Every officer, emplogue and his family has a happy privilege in this affair and a cordial invitation is being extended to them to attend. "Our picnic this year will be different," said County Purchasing Agent P.W. Slabaugh today, "inasmuch as each county department will suggest and take charge of one part of the afternoon's program. They have all been busy getting ready and are now drawing up the cinch straps so that there will be no wiggle or wobble and will be ready to ride forth promptly on time." The date set for the picnic has been designated as "Rube Day" by the county fathers and all those who attend are expected to dress themselves accordingly. Sunbonnets and overalls are expected to be the style of the occasion. Everyone is asked to meet at the courthouse at precisely 1:30 p.m. Those who do not have automobiles of their own will be accommodated by those who have. Festivities at the park will begin precisely at 2:30 o'clock with a parade, which, according to Dr. Slabaugh, will "paralyze the public and pulmotorize the palace." A basket lunch will be served at 5:30 o'clock. Above all says Mr. Slabaugh in a calendar of coming events sent out today, "don't neglect to bring your sweetest smile. Let's all go and help to make this picnic sparkle like a bottle of hzz in an ocean of cold tea." let's get in the breeze of the hustling, bustling gang, advance the spark plug, blow your horn and let her fillyver." — Try Plain Dealer Want Ads. — The Plain Dealer for Job Printing.
