One of the unique features of the occasion was a surprise sprung upon the gathering just a moment before the ceremony by the arrival of Mrs. E. E. French and Mrs. Robert Allen of Whittier, sisters of the bride, who gained the secret just in time to hasten from Whittier to return a friendly joke which Mrs. Seamans had played on Mrs. French at her wedding several years ago.

RAILS CROSSED U.S. 52 YRS. AGO TODAY
SAN FRANCISCO, May 11—A note of pride in the progress of the So. Pac. Co. in the past, and of optimism in the future development of the great west, was struck by J. H. Dyer, general manager, in a statement issued today, the anniversary of the driving of the last spike which united the country with a transcontinental railroad line, May 10, 1869.
"Fifty-two years ago today at Promonfort Point, Utah, the rails brought westward and those thrust to the east, met, and the last spike was driven, uniting the two railroad systems which formed the western links of the iron chain connecting the Atlantic and Pacific seaboards. That day and that event were momentous in the history of American railroading."
"Then this company had 871 miles of roadbed, 147 locomotives, 1561 freight cars, and 169 passenger coaches. Today the Pacific System, stretching from Portland on the north to El Paso on the south, and from San Francisco to Ogden, operates 7110 miles of road in six states, representing on aggregate area of 686,329 square miles and a population of 5,400,000. More than 50,000 employees are engaged."
BLAMES LIQUOR FOR BURGLARY ATTEMPT
SAN FRANCISCO, May 11.—Liquor was named today as the potion which made the change of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for William E. Anderson, honorably discharged Canadian soldier.
When away from alcohol, according to testimony at the coroner's inquest into the cause of his death, he was a quiet, homeloving man, possessed of sufficient money to keep the wolf away and known for his donations to worthy causes.
But last week he was drinking and Saturday night found him a burglar, grappling with Louis R. Ardouin, Olympic clubman and wrestler. In the struggle Ardouin choked him to death.
SECRECY MARKING PLANS FOR PICNIC
Plans for the annual picnic of court-house officials and deputies to be held at Orange County park Saturday, May 21, are assuming almost the proportions of a county fair.
Every official department of the county is planning to put on a "stunt that will be a regular whirlwind. And every stunt planned is guarded as a deep secret by its originators. Every thing will be sprung on the picnic ground.
"Oh! R. Abby, deputy county clerk, and Probation Officer Paul Wright, who have a reputation for 'Keeping the jail clean' have "framed" something good, but they will not even give a hint of the nature of their "extravanganza."
Other officials and deputies say they have something better than the stunt Abbey and Wright have conceived.
